At the same time, the dimensions of the device remained unchanged, but the frames around the screen became narrower, which made it possible to integrate a larger screen into the same dimensions of the case - everything is logical.

Concerning appearance devices, the changes are noticeable here too. If the flagship had just reworked the flat side edges, which are now rounded and pleasant to the touch, but remained the same metal, then the Xperia Z3 Compact also changed the side frame materials. Now it is made not of metal, but of polycarbonate, and besides, it has become transparent, which radically changed the status perception of the device.

If the previous Xperia smartphone The Z1 Compact really looked and felt like a serious, expensive product, like a real miniature version of a flagship, with the same materials, with the same heavy metal frame that gave the device a brutal appearance, then transparent plastic running around the entire side perimeter of the case. new Xperia Z3 Compact, it is simply not able to give such a serious look. On the contrary, it seems to simplify and reduce the cost of the device in appearance, translating it into the category of youth solutions. Of course, multicolored and transparent plastics may well catch the younger generation, but for a status, serious thing, such changes in appearance are destructive. As a result, if you put Z1 Compact and Z3 Compact side by side, they will look like two products of completely different levels, especially considering the variety of colors that has appeared in the latter, including green and carrot orange options.

But in all this there is also a positive moment: the corners of the side frame are now made of polycarbonate material, so they play the role of a kind of shock absorbers, in theory, helping the smartphone to "survive" after falling from a height.

The side plastic frame is firm and a little rough to the touch, so that the smartphone is held firmly enough in the hand, it cannot be taken away. In general, dimensions and thickness new Sony The Xperia Z3 Compact is such that the smartphone is comfortable to hold in the hand and to carry in any pocket of any size. Compared to most modern mobile devices, the smartphone is indeed quite compact, albeit not the thinnest solution on the mobile market.

The covers on the side frame are made of the same transparent polycarbonate and equipped with rubberized gaskets, since the smartphone, like its predecessors, is provided with maximum protection against water and dust in accordance with the IP 65/68 standard. There are two covers here, they hide the slots for a memory card and a SIM-card, as well as a Micro-USB connector. By the way, changes have occurred here too: now Nano-SIM cards are used in Sony's top mobile devices, obviously with an eye on the painless possible transition of some users from the Apple iPhone. The rest will have to go to the communication salon again and change their SIM-card to a new one.

There is another very noticeable improvement that should please fans of Japanese brand mobile devices. Now the back surface, like the front, is made not of plastic, but of real glass. Both glasses do not have a factory protective film, the characteristics of the glass are similar to the well-known Corning Gorilla Glass.

In terms of sound, there have also been changes. Now the smartphone has two grilles for sound output, they are located above and below the screen, the role of the grilles is played by two symmetrical slits cut right in the glass. Quite a logical decision - to turn the speakers "face" to the user, and now there are two speakers themselves.

Another change: before, it was through the upper slot of the speaker that the light of the notification indicator made its way, and now it is brought out into the traditional, separately located round peephole. In the settings menu, there is an item in which it is possible to disable some of the indicator's functions, leaving it to notify only about the charging status.

There are traditionally no hardware buttons below the screen, control is carried out using virtual buttons on the screen.

Of the functional elements on the back, you can find only the camera window and the flash eye. The flash here consists of one section and is slightly farther from the camera than before. It can be used as a flashlight; for this, the smartphone has a corresponding pre-installed program.

In terms of mechanical hardware controls, no changes have occurred. The power and lock button is still located on the right side, traditionally for latest smartphones Sony, looks like a metal round, but in the models of the third series it is slightly different in appearance. A double volume rocker can be found next to it. All keys are large, easily groped blindly, have a distinct springy stroke, there are no complaints in this regard.

The color scheme of the new mini-flagship cases has undergone significant changes. The smartphone is presented not only in traditional black and white, but also in completely unexpected bright cucumber-green and carrot-orange colors, which, together with transparent plastic, is clearly designed to win the interest of a young audience.

Screen

The Sony Xperia Z3 Compact smartphone is equipped with an IPS sensor matrix. The dimensions of the screen are 57 × 101 mm, the diagonal is 4.6 inches, the resolution is 1280 × 720 pixels. The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface, resistant to scratches. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are no worse than those of the Google Nexus 7 (2013) (hereinafter simply Nexus 7). For clarity, we present a photo in which a white surface is reflected in the turned off screens of both devices (Sony Xperia Z3 Compact, as it is not difficult to determine, is on the right, then they can be distinguished by their size):

Both screens are dark, but the Sony screen is still darker (its brightness in the photo is 119 versus 122 for the Nexus 7). The tripling of reflected objects in the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact screen is very weak, which indicates that there is no air gap between the outer glass (aka touch sensor) and the matrix surface (OGS type screen - One Glass Solution). Due to the smaller number of boundaries (such as glass-to-air) with very different refractive indices, such screens look better under strong ambient light, but their repair in case of cracked outer glass is much more expensive, since the entire screen has to be changed. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (very effective, similar to that of the Nexus 7), so fingerprints are much easier to remove, and appear at a slower rate than in the case of ordinary glass.

With manual brightness control, its maximum value was about 530 cd / m², and the minimum was 3.5 cd / m². The maximum value is high, and given the good anti-glare properties, the screen should be clearly visible in bright daylight. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable level. Automatic brightness control works according to the light sensor (it is located in the left upper corner on the front panel). In automatic mode, when the ambient light conditions change, the screen brightness both increases and decreases. The operation of this function depends on the position of the brightness adjustment. If it is at the maximum, then in complete darkness the auto-brightness function reduces the brightness to 100 cd / m² (a bit too much, but it will do), in an office illuminated with artificial light (about 400 lux) it sets to 200 cd / m² (normal), in a very bright environment (equivalent to outdoor lighting on a clear day, but no direct sunlight - 20,000 lux or slightly more) increases to 450 cd / m² (sufficient). If the brightness slider is at half the scale (it is very non-linear - after 50% the brightness goes up sharply with an increase in the setting value), then the screen brightness for the three conditions indicated above is as follows: 50, 125 and 450 cd / m² (suitable values). If the dimmer is set to minimum - 4.5, 40, 450 cd / m². As a result, the automatic brightness control function works absolutely adequately. At any brightness level, there is no significant backlight modulation, so there is no screen flickering either.

The screen has good viewing angles without inverting tints and without significant color shift, even with large gaze deviations from the perpendicular to the screen. It can be seen that the colors did not change much on both screens, but in the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact the contrast decreased to a large extent due to the strong black highlighting. And white box:

The brightness at an angle on both screens has noticeably decreased (at least 4 times, based on the difference in exposure), but in the case of the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact, the drop in brightness is less (the brightness in the photos is 232 versus 214 for the Nexus 7). At the same time, the color tone changed slightly. The black field, when deviated along the diagonal, is lightened strongly and acquires a violet or red-violet tint. The photos below demonstrate this (the brightness of the white areas in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the screens is the same for the screens!):

The contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) is high - about 900: 1. The response time for the transition black-white-black is 32 ms (18 ms on + 14 ms off). The transition between gray tones of 25% and 75% (based on the numerical value of the color) and back takes 46 ms in total. Constructed from 32 points with equal intervals by the numerical value of the shade of gray, the gamma curve did not reveal a blockage either in highlights or shadows, and the exponent of the approximating power function turned out to be 2.48, which is higher than the standard value of 2.2, while the real gamma curve strongly deviates from the power dependence:

The smartphone has a dynamic (and not switchable!) Adjustment of the backlight brightness depending on the nature of the displayed image. The general tendency is that the brightness decreases in dark images, but the algorithm is somehow complicated, and as a result, the brightness periodically jumps noticeably, which is annoying, and a decrease in brightness in dark images reduces the visibility of gradations in shadows under ambient light conditions. That is, there is zero benefit from this function, only harm. As a result, we carried out a number of tests - determining the contrast and response time, comparing the black illumination at angles - when displaying special templates with invariably average brightness, and not single-color fields across the entire screen. Of course, the resulting dependence of brightness on hue (gamma curve), most likely, does not correspond to the gamma curve. static image, since the measurements were carried out with sequential output of shades of gray almost on the entire screen.

The color gamut is noticeably wider than sRGB:

They are very atypical. As they write on the Sony website, this screen uses LEDs with a blue emitter and a green and red phosphor (usually a blue emitter and a yellow phosphor), which, in combination with special matrix light filters, allows you to obtain a wide color gamut. Unfortunately, as a result, the colors of images - drawings, photographs and films - oriented to the sRGB space (and there are the overwhelming majority of them) have an unnatural saturation. This is especially noticeable on recognizable shades, such as skin tones. The result is shown in the photo above.

The balance of shades on the gray scale is not ideal, since the color temperature is significantly higher than the standard 6500 K. True, the deviation from the spectrum of an absolute black body (ΔE) is less than 10, which is considered an acceptable indicator for a consumer device. At the same time, the variation in color temperature and ΔE is small, which has a positive effect on the visual perception of color balance. (The dark areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since the color balance there is not very important, and the error in measuring color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

This smartphone has the ability to correct the color balance by adjusting the intensities of the three primary colors.

Which is what we tried to do, the result is data signed as Corr. in the graphs above. As a result, we slightly reduced ΔE and set the white point at 6500 K (but also greatly reduced the brightness):

However, such a correction did not reduce the oversaturation of colors. If the image on the screen of this smartphone still seems not bright enough to someone, then you can turn on the proprietary mode X-Reality for mobile... The result is shown below:

Saturation and contour sharpness are programmatically increased, and there are fewer discernible gradations in the saturated color area. But the picture, yes, has become brighter. There is also a "maximum brightness" mode, in which the color contrast is increased even more:

Let's summarize. The brightness adjustment range of this screen is wide, and everything is in order with anti-glare properties, which allows you to comfortably use your smartphone both on a sunny day outside and in complete darkness. It is permissible to use a mode with automatic brightness adjustment, which works absolutely adequately. The advantages also include an effective oleophobic coating, no flicker and no air gap in the layers of the screen. The disadvantages are strong black lightening when the gaze deviates from the perpendicular to the screen surface and aggressive dynamic brightness adjustment. Not everything is in order with the color rendition, since the colors are oversaturated (skin tones are especially affected) and the color temperature is too high. The presence of appropriate adjustments allows you to correct the balance to almost perfect, but at the expense of reducing the brightness. Taking into account the importance of characteristics for this particular class of devices (and the most important thing is the distinguishability of information in a wide range of external conditions), the screen quality can be considered high.

Sound

As much as the significant improvement in the sound of the flagship Sony Xperia Z3 was pleased, the sound of the compact version remained so inexpressive, even with two stereo speakers. Low frequencies are present, but the speakers sound somehow dull, they do not impress with either the purity of the sound or the power, and even slightly wheeze at the maximum volume level. In the spoken dynamics, the interlocutor's speech, intonation and timbre remain distinguishable and recognizable, however, he sounds dull.

The interior arrangement and sound settings remain the same. The device traditionally uses its own proprietary Walkman player to play music. The stock audio player is rich in settings and additional software sound enhancements, such as a built-in equalizer with a mass of preset values ​​(you can set your own), Clear Phase technologies, xLoud and virtual surround sound. Management of most of the settings is available if the complex ClearAudio + function is turned off, otherwise all settings are at the mercy of the machine. It is worth noting that in the new "compact", as in the new flagship, Sony's proprietary digital noise reduction technology is implemented. The developers promise that when using a special headset MDR-NC31EM, the level of external noise can be reduced by 98%.

FM-radio is included in the standard configuration of the smartphone. Traditionally, it works only with headphones connected as an antenna; it does not have the ability to record programs. There was no dictaphone in the standard configuration of the smartphone, as, by the way, in the main version of the Xperia Z3.

Camera

The Sony Xperia Z3 Compact is equipped with the same two digital camera modules with a resolution of 20.7 and 2.2 megapixels, which were equipped with previous flagships and which are now installed in the Xperia Z3. The hardware base is exactly the same, only software effects are added. The main 20.7MP camera is equipped with a 27mm G Lens with an F2.0 aperture. The camera uses a 1 / 2.3-inch Exmor RS for mobile sensor and a Bionz for mobile processor.

By default, the cameras of all Sony devices work as standard in the so-called super-auto mode (iauto) with a wide aspect ratio, but you can switch shooting to manual settings. It is noteworthy that when the hardware button on the side of the device is activated, the camera turns on quickly, but it is always activated in automatic shooting mode, even if the mode was previously enabled. manual setting... If you launch the camera application from the desktop or from the program menu, then in this case everything goes as usual, and the camera leaves the previous settings intact, that is, it starts in manual mode, if such has been exhibited earlier. Note that there is a big difference between automatic and manual modes, because the maximum resolution can only be set in manual mode. When shooting in automatic mode, which is set by default, photos are taken with a size of 3840 × 2160 (8 megapixels), and in manual mode, the maximum possible resolution is exactly the same 20.7 Mp (5248 × 3936).

The camera can shoot video in 1080p and UHD (4K), but the main thing is that it also has the ability to shoot in the most interesting mode - 1080p at 60 frames / s. An example of such a video is shown below.

The compact model managed to rehabilitate its older brother in terms of the camera. The Z3 Compact's camera isn't perfect. Rather, it's not perfect yet. But it is clear that it is well developed. In some places, you can find echoes of the unpleasant moments, pronounced in the Z3, but in general the camera is already ready to use.

However, oddly enough, the Z3 Compact has a module different from the Z3. At the same time, it is very similar to the Z1 Compact and Z2 modules. This assumption can be made from the size of the resulting image. On the other hand, it is possible that in all the latest flagships the modules are the same, since the size of the full 20 Mp image is the same for them. And since in the Superior Auto mode only the Z3 stood out in the image size, it can be assumed that all flagships, starting with the Z1 Compact, work according to the same program with slight differences, and only the Z3 should fundamentally differ from them (and its program in full we haven't seen yet). However, all these guesses are partly confirmed by the graph.

The camera itself is doing very well, which is quite expected. Its graphical resolution curve is almost perfect. And although the gap with the leader is just over 0.1 lines per pixel, the dependence is almost constant, which indicates equally good performance in different conditions. Field photographs confirm this, although there is still something to complain about in their case. As already mentioned, the Z3's flaws are still present here, but much less pronounced. You can find subtle sharping, sometimes there are small areas of blur, the program does not work very smoothly over the foliage in the distance. On the other hand, there are practically no noticeable noises, and by and large the camera does not have any significant problems. So it is still great for shooting a variety of scenes.

Telephone part and communications

The smartphone works as standard in modern 2G GSM and 3G WCDMA networks, and there is also support for fourth generation (LTE) networks used in Russia. In practice, with the SIM-card of the domestic operator MTS, the smartphone confidently recognizes and works with 4G networks. The network capabilities of the smartphone are extensive, correspond to a truly top-level level: there is support for the Wi-Fi 5 GHz range, Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi Display, as standard, you can organize a wireless access point via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth channels. The mode of connecting external devices (USB Host, USB OTG) is supported, so you can connect flash drives and mice with keyboards to the Micro-USB port. The navigation module works with both GPS and the domestic Glonass system.

Spontaneous reboots / shutdowns during testing were not observed, as well as slowdowns or freezes of the system. When you bring the smartphone to your ear, the screen is blocked by the proximity sensor. An LED indicator at the top of the front panel is used to indicate charging status and incoming events.

There is no dedicated top row with numbers on the standard keyboard - you need to switch the layout every time. The layout itself and the arrangement of the keys are standard: to switch the language layout, just click on the button with the corresponding icon. The phone application supports Smart Dial, that is, when dialing a phone number, a search is immediately carried out by the first letters in contacts. There is a convenient opportunity to move the keyboard closer to one of the sides to make it easier to reach with the fingers of one hand. Naturally, the possibility of continuous input by sliding your finger from letter to letter is also supported - Swype.

OS and software

The operating system is a fresh version of the Google Android 4.4.4 KitKat software platform, on top of which its own proprietary graphical user interface is traditionally installed. The internal arrangement of the shell, all the menus, settings items and pop-up contextual submenus - everything remains exactly the same. Externally, however, the shell has undergone significant dimensions. Previously, Sony's GUI elements were fairly fine-grained. Now, unexpectedly, all the elements on the screen, and most importantly - the application icons themselves, began to look much larger and clearer. Fonts have increased, such sudden transformations have only benefited the smartphone. There are also less striking, but in some ways more useful improvements. For example, the menu finally has the function of rebooting the device, because before that only Sony smartphones suffered from the lack of such an opportunity.

The new Sony mobile devices have tight integration with the Sony PlayStation 4 game console. If the house already has one, the smartphones of the new Xperia Z3 line or the Xperia Z3 Tablet will be able to act as a "portable screen", that is, everything that happens begins to be displayed on the screen of the mobile devices. This is convenient when, for example, you need to free the TV, if a family member suddenly wants to watch a program. For such use, Sony will produce special fasteners that will allow you to connect a smartphone or tablet to the game console's joystick. This mode is called PS4 Remote Play.

Performance

The hardware platform of the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact is based on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 SoC with four Krait 400 cores, like the flagship Xperia Z3 (the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact was based on Qualcomm Snapdragon 800). Here, the maximum frequency of processor cores is a maximum of 2.5 GHz, since the most advanced version of Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 (MSM8974AC) is used.

Graphics processing is done by the same Adreno 330 video accelerator. About 11 out of 16 GB of internal memory for the user's needs are initially available in the device. The amount of RAM of the smartphone is 2 GB, and this Sony Xperia Z3 Compact is disadvantageously different from the company's flagship, which has as many as three gigabytes of RAM. MicroSD memory cards in this model are supported up to 128 GB, you can also connect external flash drives, keyboards and mice to the Micro-USB port using a special adapter in OTG mode.

To get an idea of ​​the performance of the tested smartphone platform, let's run a standard set of tests.

All the results obtained by us when testing the smartphone in the latest versions of popular benchmarks, we have summarized in tables for convenience. Several other devices from different segments are usually added to the table, also tested on similar latest versions of benchmarks (this is done only for a visual assessment of the obtained dry numbers). Unfortunately, within the framework of one comparison, it is impossible to present the results from different versions of benchmarks, therefore, many worthy and relevant models remain behind the scenes - due to the fact that they once passed the “obstacle course” on previous versions of test programs.

Testing in MobileXPRT as well as in the latest versions of AnTuTu and GeekBench 3:

In the AnTuTu test, the smartphone demonstrates very high figures, but here it should be borne in mind that now a new, fifth version of the popular benchmark is used, and all previous models were tested in the fourth version. The resulting numbers have increased dramatically, so there is no point in directly comparing these results. (We will mark in the tablets which versions of the benchmark this or that model was tested with until there are enough models tested in the fifth version of the test for comparison.) In any case, all top smartphones based on Snapdragon 801 are the most powerful and productive today mobile devices, the power of which will be enough for a long time to complete any assigned tasks.

When testing in 3DMark for the highest performing smartphones, it is now possible to run the application in Unlimited mode, where the rendering resolution is fixed at 720p and VSync is disabled (which can cause the speed to rise above 60 fps).

As for benchmarks for evaluating the speed of a javascript engine, you should always make allowances for the fact that the results in them significantly depend on the browser in which they are launched, so that the comparison can be truly correct only on the same OS and browsers, and this possibility is available when testing not always. In the case of Android OS, we always try to use Google Chrome.

Video playback

To test the "omnivorous" video playback (including support for various codecs, containers and special features, such as subtitles), we used the most common formats that make up the bulk of the content available on the Web. Note that it is important for mobile devices to have support for hardware video decoding at the chip level, since it is often impossible to process modern versions using processor cores alone. Also, do not expect a mobile device to decode everything, since the leadership in flexibility belongs to the PC, and no one is going to challenge it.

According to the test results, the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact smartphone was not equipped with all the decoders required to fully play most of the most common files on the network. To play them successfully, you will have to resort to using a third-party player - for example, MX Player. True, in it, you will first have to change the settings, switching from hardware decoding to software or to a new mode called Hardware +(not supported by all smartphones), only then the sound will appear. All results are tabulated.

Additionally, the MHL interface was tested. To test it, we used a monitor ViewSonic VX2363Smhl that supports direct MHL connection (in version 2.0) using a passive Micro-USB to HDMI adapter cable. In this case, the MHL output was carried out at a resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels with a frequency of 60 fps. Regardless of the actual orientation of the smartphone, the display of the image on the screens of the smartphone and the monitor is carried out only in landscape orientation with the connector on the smartphone down.

In this case, the image on the monitor is exactly inscribed in the boundaries of the display area (if you do not forget to set the Image size 100%) and repeats the image on the smartphone screen one to one in a variation of interpolation from 1280 by 720 to 1920 by 1080 pixels.

When connecting via MHL, an icon for accessing MHL settings and an icon for launching several favorite programs appear in the event list:

Traditionally, in the case of Sony, a smartphone connected via MHL can act as a remote control for the TV, if the latter supports this function.

The MHL sound is output (in this case, the sounds were heard through the headphones connected to the monitor, since there are no speakers in the monitor itself) and is of good quality. At the same time, sounds are not output through the loudspeaker of the smartphone itself, and the volume is not regulated by the buttons on the smartphone body, but is turned off. In our case, a smartphone with an MHL adapter connected, judging by the charge indicator, was charging.

Then, using a set of test files with an arrow and a rectangle moving one division per frame (see "Testing methods for video playback and display devices. Version 1 (for mobile devices)"), we checked how the video is displayed on the screen of the smartphone itself. Screenshots with an exposure of 1 s helped to determine the nature of the frame output of video files with various parameters: the resolution varied from 1280 by 720 (720p), 1920 by 1080 (1080p) and 3840 by 2160 (4K) pixels and the frame rate of 24, 25, 30, 50 and 60 fps. In our tests, we used the MX Player video player in the "Hardware" mode. The results of this (block entitled "Smartphone Screen") and the following test are tabulated: excellent

According to the criterion for outputting frames, the quality of video playback on the screen of the smartphone itself is good, since frames (or groups of frames) can be displayed with a more or less uniform alternation of intervals and without frame drops. The displayed range of brightness is equal to the standard range of 16-235, in the shadows only a couple of the darkest shades are indistinguishable in brightness from black, but in the highlights all gradations of shades are displayed. When playing video files with a resolution of 720p (1280 by 720 pixels), the image of the video file itself is displayed, exactly along the edge of the screen, in its original resolution.

With a monitor connected via MHL, during video playback, the monitor displays an exact copy of the smartphone screen, but the output is already carried out in true Full HD resolution in the case of 1080p files.

The brightness range displayed on the monitor is equal to the standard range of 16-235, in the shadows again only a couple of the darkest shades are indistinguishable in brightness from black, but all the gradations of shades are displayed in the highlights. The results of the monitor output tests are shown in the table above in the "MHL (monitor output)" block. The output quality is good.

The bottom line is that an MHL connection can be used for gaming, watching movies, displaying web pages, and other activities that benefit from increasing screen size.

Battery life

The lithium-ion battery installed in the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact has a capacity of 2600 mAh, which is not the maximum, but quite decent for a modern smartphone - this is even more than the previous model (2300 mAh for the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact). As a result, the smartphone showed excellent results in battery life, the screen is not the largest in area, and the resolution is far from Full HD.

Sony Mobile has released another compact smartphone, which is quite good in terms of its characteristics. The undeniable quality of workmanship, body materials, the highest performance and maximum autonomy, comfortable dimensions and excellent ergonomics are the strengths of the new product, which it adopted from its predecessor, and improved something (rear glass, for example). As usual, the camera and the quality of the screen can be criticized when compared with the products of other market leaders, but in general they are quite consistent with the high level of the smartphone. We were greatly surprised by the sudden transition from a metal frame, as a visual basis, giving the smartphone the status of an expensive thing, to transparent, cheerful teenage plastic, but it may be to the liking of many, because the ergonomics, in general, have not suffered. The cost of the device, at which Sony Xperia Z3 Compact will be officially presented in our stores, was announced just the other day: the smartphone on the Russian market will be sold at a price of 24 thousand rubles. The start of sales was scheduled for September 19, so by the time this article was published, the retail was not experiencing a shortage of offers. In parallel, the flagship Xperia Z3 appeared on store shelves, the recommended price of which was determined at 30 thousand rubles. It is worth noting that the flagship will also be offered in a version with two SIM-cards at a price of 31 thousand rubles, but the Z3 Compact is not expected to support two SIM-cards.

To write this comparison, the menus were prompted by such a frequent question about what to choose - Sony Xperia Z3 or Xperia Z3 Compact? Most often, it is asked by beginners who have a certain amount of funds to purchase a flagship smartphone from a Japanese brand, but I don’t know which model to take. The only significant difference that really affects the comfort and ease of use for each individual is the physical size and all that follows. This would be decisive for me when choosing between these smartphones, since both of them have powerful technical parameters and will bring pleasure to use.

Some people like big phones, some like smaller ones; Someone craves to have a device with a bigger screen, but for someone 4 and a half inches is more than enough - this is exclusively a matter of taste and preference. Nevertheless, it would be better to compare the Xperia Z3 Compact in order to clearly see the difference and possible advantages of one of the models over its sibling.





Visually, both phones look great thanks to the OmniBalance design. Both of them are covered with protective glass on the front and back, however, the side edges of the Xperia Z3 are metal, while the Z3 Compact is covered with translucent plastic, which creates a three-dimensional effect, so the tactile phones differ. The dimensions of smartphones are as follows: 146 x 72 x 7.3 mm and 152 grams, versus 127 x 64.9 x 8.6 mm and 129 grams. Both are IP68 certified - protection of the case against water and dust ingress by observing the closed caps.

The second significant difference resulting from the physical dimensions is the size of the display. The Ixperia Z3 has a 5.2-inch IPS display with Full HD resolution (1920 by 1080), and the Ixperia Z3 Compact has a 4.6-inch IPS matrix with HD resolution (1280 by 720). Both screens are of high quality, with maximum viewing angles, bright and rich color reproduction, and the picture looks great on them. The fact that the compact model has a lower resolution does not mean that the screen is worse - with such dimensions, this resolution is more than enough. Of course, watching movies and playing games is more comfortable on the larger display.



The hardware base of both phones is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset: a 4-core processor with an operating frequency of 2.5 GHz and Adreno 330 video. The amount of internal memory is also the same - 16 GB expandable using microSD cards. The difference lies in the amount of RAM: 3 GB in the Xperia Z3 and 2 GB in the Xperia Z3 Comapct, but in practice, the mini-version again lacks this volume for the eyes, and in synthetic tests it even shows superiority (lower screen resolution plays into the hands). The battery capacity is also different: 3100 mAh and 2600 mAh, but here there is no significant difference in autonomy either, both smartphones are leaders in this parameter, outperforming most competitors in terms of battery life, demonstrating almost equal autonomy among themselves. Still, the Z3 Compact is a little more durable.

Believe it or not, when it comes to comparing cameras, the technical parameters are identical here - the main 20.7-megapixel Exmor RS sensor and 2.2-megapixel front sensor. However, in real use, it is noted that photos and videos from the Xperia Z3 come out a little better, which is apparently related to the software part. Appearance and ergonomics

Let's start with the obvious. Smartphones with a screen diagonal of 4.6 inches are not in vogue now - we have already begun to forget how convenient it is to use them. The Z3 Compact fits easily into any pocket and doesn't stick out of it. The device is really easy to operate with one hand - even the fair sex will not have to reach with a thumb to any of the four edges. Hands do not get tired of prolonged communication with this gadget, because it weighs less than 130 grams.

Sony engineers pleasantly surprised us by increasing the Compact's display - from 4.3 to 4.6 inches, but the dimensions of the device remained the same. They are the same for both Compact models: 127 mm high and 65 mm wide. It is noteworthy that the thickness of the case was reduced by almost a millimeter - from 9.5 mm to 8.6 mm. In general, the Z3 Compact turned out to be even smaller than its predecessor.

The arrangement of the keys and connectors on the device is the same as in the vast majority of Android smartphones - you get used to the Z3 Compact very quickly. Perhaps the main innovation in terms of design can be considered the transfer of the external speaker to the front panel - the expectation that the phone is usually placed on the table "face" up, so that the speaker will not be covered.

The branded round power key, made of aluminum, is now slightly larger. Next to it is a swing button for adjusting the volume and a dedicated hardware camera key. All buttons have a short and distinct stroke.

The side faces of the new "Compact" body are made of transparent plastic. Due to this, they appear to be concave, although in reality they are, of course, convex. The inscriptions on the ends cast a shadow “deep into” the smartphone - an interesting optical effect. On the corners of the case there are special inserts that protect the case from impacts when dropped. Whether this works is unknown: we did not dare to check.

The slots for cards are hidden here under special plastic plugs - in order to maintain the tightness of the structure. The device is protected against ingress of dust and moisture according to IP65 / 68 standards. The manufacturer claims that if all the plugs are tightly closed, the gadget can stay in fresh water at a depth of one and a half meters for no more than thirty minutes.

Under one flap there is a Micro-USB interface and a slot for a microSD memory card, under the other there is a slot for Nano-SIM. Between them is the traditional Sony magnetic connector for connecting the device to the docking station. On the top there is a universal 3.5 mm audio jack for connecting a wired headset, and on the bottom there is a loop for a strap.

The "back" of the new Compact is made of glass, while its predecessor was made of plastic. Despite this, the smartphone does not slip at all in the hands, but it looks much more expensive and more interesting than the previous version ( the opinion of the author may not coincide with the opinion of the editorial board. - approx. ed. ).
