Total Commander is essentially an analogue Windows explorer, but it is much more efficient and easier to manage. For many users, this file manager has long become a vital tool for starting work on a PC. The popularity of Total Commander is also largely determined by its weak degree of payment protection. This file manager is distributed under a Shareware license, that is, it is meant to be used for free for a month. But in fact, even after a free month of use has expired, Total Commander is not blocked.
It is enough to press one of the three numbers (1, 2 or 3) and after the countdown of the seconds, the manager will start. In this case, there will be no restrictions on the functionality of the program.
Download Total Commander current version can be found on the official website page. At the time of this writing, the endless trial version of Total Commander 8.51a, both 32-bit and 64-bit, is relevant.
I would like to draw your attention to the fact that during the installation of Total Commander you can select the folder where the settings files are located, for which you need to click on the "Set path to INI files" button. Now you can easily transfer your Total Commander settings to another computer by simply copying the INI files.
For storing INI files, I chose the program directory (it is convenient when the program is used from different operating systems). If you use several versions of Total Commander on your computer, then it is better to store INI files in the Windows directory.
The user interface of Total Commander is made in a classic two-pane form, which is very convenient when performing a variety of manipulations with files and folders.
Setting Total Commander
Let's go through the settings of the Total Commander, for this you need to select "Configuration" - "Settings" from the top menu. Window view

You can pin frequently used tabs to the file pane as follows. Open the desired folder and right-click on it. From the context menu, select the option

If there are many locked tabs, then they can be evenly distributed across both panels of the manager by simply dragging them with the mouse. Remember to save changes from the top menu "Configuration" - "Save position" and "Save settings"
... Now you have the tabs you need, which will not disappear until you change the settings. During long-term work with the program, it may happen that you will have many tabs open. In order to close them on any of the tabs, right-click and select the item "Close all tabs"
or press the hotkey combination "Ctrl + Shift + W"... This will close all unlocked and inactive tabs on the panel of the file manager that you selected.

"Shift + Home" - cm_OpenDesktop- open the "Desktop" tab in the Total Commander window. It is often convenient to start work from the desktop, and from here you can go to the Control Panel, etc.
"Shift + BackSpace" - cm_GoToRoot- go to the root directory of the disk from anywhere. Also a very useful thing. By clicking "Ctrl + \" you also, by default, navigate to the root of the drive. Well, just a key "BackSpace" by default, in Total, it moves one level higher.

If you open the tab "Plugins"
in the Total Commander settings, you will see that the plugins themselves are divided into four types: Archiving plugins (have the WCX extension), File system plugins (WFX), Internal viewer plugins (WLX) and Information plugins (WDX).
Archiving plugins allow you to work with archives that are not initially supported in the file manager or are supported with limitations. With the help of archiving plugins, support for working with a number of other file formats is implemented - CHM, MSI, ICL, DLL, etc. File system plugins allow you to access disks that are inaccessible from Windows, remote systems, internal Windows modules, media with other file systems. Internal viewer plugins allow you to view files of various formats, incl. not supported by Lister's internal viewer, such as images, tables, databases, etc. Information plugins are designed to access extended information about files (MP3 tags, image attributes, etc.)
There are two ways to install plugins: automatically and manually. Automatic installation does not cause any difficulties: you just need to open the downloaded archive with the plugin in the Total Commander panel and the manager will offer to install the detected module. Truth, automatic installation not available for all plugins.
Connecting additional plugins manually will not be difficult either. To install the plugin, unpack the contents of the archive into a separate folder. It is best to create a subdirectory in the directory with Total Commander "Plugins"
, where already and create separate folders for each plugin separately. In the future, such a policy will allow you to avoid confusion in the Total Commander folders.

The plugin allows you to view all entries, including hidden ones, and works much faster than the built-in Windows uninstaller. Thanks to the plugin ProcFS Task Manager
you can view running processes on a PC, including those that can hide from the standard dispatcher Windows tasks... The plugin allows you to view the properties of running processes and the libraries they use (F3), change the priorities of the processes (double-click on the process) and unload them (Del).

This plugin allows you to view the list of services, and by the appearance of the icons, you can immediately understand whether the service is running or stopped. The plugin allows you to quickly change the startup mode of a specific service (manual, automatic, disabled), you can pause the service, delete or start the service. Quick tabs and files in Total Commander
Open the folder in Total Commander that you want to save and have quick access to it, and press the keyboard shortcut "Ctrl + D" or click on the star in the upper right corner of the panel. Total Commander Control Panel
It is quite easy to add shortcuts to programs, internal commands, as well as any system command to the Total Commander toolbar. It is necessary either to pull the exe file of the program to the panel itself or to register the path to the program manually.
First option. Go to the folder " Program Files"and drag the exe file of the program with the mouse to the Total Commander panel.
Second option. Right-click on an empty space on the toolbar and then "Edit". In the window that opens, click "Add" and add the program by specifying the full path to it exe file... I prefer to use the first option.
If, after clicking the "Add" button, click the small button with a magnifying glass, then you will see a grandiose list of commands provided in Total Commander.
At the bottom of the window in the box "Filter"

(group rename) and click "OK". An additional icon will appear in the toolbar, by clicking on which you can rename a whole list of files at once.
The Total toolbar is also interesting because other files and folders can interact with the programs fixed here. Drag, for example, the folder containing the mp3 files to the AIMP3 player icon in the toolbar. Your audio files will start playing one by one. Similarly, drag the CSS file onto the icon text editor Notepad ++ and the program will immediately open it. Drag "n Drop (take and drop) from the file panels to the shortcuts of the folders we created earlier will cause files to be copied to these folders!
If your Total Commander is at startup, then thanks to the installed icons for launching programs directly from the toolbar of the TS manager, you will not need to install unnecessary shortcuts on the desktop. If necessary, unnecessary icons can be easily removed from the toolbar in the same way as installed: having selected the unnecessary icon, click on the "Remove" button and the icon will disappear.

These buttons also support Drag "n Drop, therefore, it is most convenient to use them not by pressing the F3, F4, F5 buttons themselves, but by dragging the selected files and folders onto these buttons. Believe me, it's more convenient this way. And if you right-click on the F8 button, a context menu will open, where you can empty the trash or view its properties.
FTP client integrated into Total Commander allows you to connect to your website (blog) without any problems and issues necessary information... To select a connection, just press the CTRL + F key combination, and if you have not configured any connections yet, then in the window that opens, just click on the "Add" button.
The FTP connection settings are not much different from the FileZilla FTP client settings, so you already know what to do next.

Basic operations with folders / files in Total Commander

Selecting files
Before performing operations with several objects at once, you first need to select them. This can be done by clicking on each object with the right mouse button or with the left button, after holding and holding the Ctrl key.
Renaming files
Hover the cursor over the desired file / folder and double-click on the object (but not very quickly!) With the left mouse button, the object will be colored in a blue background, and then set a new name.
Deleting files
Select the required file / folder or select several pieces at once. Then, press F8 - the delete key.
Copying / Moving Files

Setting up internal associations is available from the "Files" menu. All files that you open in Total Commander with a double click can be associated i.e. configure them to open with any programs on your computer.
Working with archives
You can compress (Alt + F5), unpack (Alt + F9) and check (Alt + Shift + F9) archives using archive plugins installed in Total Commander. In addition, you can enter the archives as in ordinary folders, which significantly saves your time.
Search by files in Total Commander
To quickly find important folders or files on the disk, use the search function integrated into the file manager by clicking on the magnifying glass icon on the toolbar or use the Alt + F7 key combination. If you search for files in Russian, do not forget to tick the "UTF-8" checkbox. All additional settings (size, creation date, available attributes) for search can be found in the tab "Additionally"

In the list of file managers, Total Commander (hereinafter TC) is the most popular. And this is not surprising, because the program provides very comfortable work with disks, folders and files, and, in addition to providing standard features typical for this class of applications, has many interesting features that simplify work. In particular, it remembers frequently used directories, supports working with bookmarks, provides quick searches (including inside files), allows you to customize hotkeys, etc. In addition, the program provides support for popular archivers and has a built-in FTP client that allows you to download files in several streams, supports resume and can work on a schedule. And its capabilities can be expanded through plug-in plugins. This article will be devoted to acquaintance with the most interesting of them, but first we will briefly dwell on the types of plugins and the nuances of their installation.
What are plugins and how to install them
There are four types of TC plugins: archiving plugins (with the WCX extension), file system plugins (WFX), internal viewer plugins (WLX), and content plugins (WDX). Today there are already more than one hundred plug-ins for TC, and it is impossible even to simply list them within the framework of the article, and it does not make much sense, since many plug-ins, if not duplicating each other, have a very similar purpose. We will focus only on those solutions that may be of interest to a wide range of users.
The most popular and well-proven plugins, along with their brief descriptions, are presented on the official website of the program (http://www.ghisler.com/addons.htm), as well as on the Russian-language website "All About Total Commander" (http: // wincmd .ru /). New plugins are available from the unofficial TC site (http://www.totalcmd.net/).
You can install plugins automatically or manually. Connecting additional modules manually is done in the settings window, called by the command Configuration -> Setting where in section Plugins click on the button with the required plug-in type and specify the location of the plug-in to be installed. For archiving plugins additionally in the list Files with extension you will need to specify the extension of those files that should be associated with the plugin being installed (Fig. 3). If there are several similar extensions, then the operation of specifying a module with a plug-in is performed several times, each time entering a different extension.

Comfortable viewing
The built-in file manager viewer (Lister) allows you to view a fairly limited list of file formats when you press the F3 key. The situation is easy to fix by installing the appropriate plugins.
After connecting the plugin IEView(http://wincmd.ru/plugring/ieview.html) it will be possible to view files in a variety of formats. This plugin uses the same engine for viewing files as Internet Explorer, and is perfect for viewing hypertext documents (including documents in MHT and CHM formats). In addition, it allows you to view documents of other formats through the software installed on your computer - PDF documents (if you have Acrobat Reader installed - Fig. 4), Word / Excel documents, PowerPoint presentations (if you have MS Office), etc. You can also customize viewing files in DjVu format by installing Browser Plugin and uncommenting in the section file ieview.ini the corresponding line. The viewing of AutoCAD documents is configured in a similar way (an appropriate viewer is required - for example, VoloView), etc.

The IEView plugin can also be used to view Shockwave Flash files. However, it is more convenient to use specialized plugins for this purpose - for example SWF Lister 2.0(http://wincmd.ru/plugring/swf_lister.html; Fig. 5), since there is a scroll bar for playback.

With the help of this plugin in the file manager, it will be possible to create and unpack archives in 7z format, as well as view their contents. To use the plugin, for example, to pack files, you need to select them, press the Alt + F5 key combination, in the window that opens, in the list of archivers' extensions, select the option 7z and, if necessary, adjust the archiving settings by clicking on the button Customization(fig. 9).

Working with CD / DVD-disks and images
If you want to make working with CD / DVD discs more comfortable and reliable, then you should get a virtual CD drive by installing the plugin Virtual Disk(http://wincmd.ru/plugring/virtdisk.html). In such a drive, it will be possible to mount images of CD / DVD discs much faster than inserting them into a real drive, and at the same time without any harm to the discs themselves, which often cease to be read from active use. This plugin allows you to emulate a virtual CD drive and connect images (in ISO format, as well as some BIN and NRG images) made from unprotected CDs to it. In addition, it can be used to emulate local hard disk or floppy disk.
For the plug-in to work, in addition to installing it in automatic mode, you need to install the driver virtual disk by calling in Windows Explorer from the context menu on the file Program Files \ totalcmd \ plugins \ wfx \ VirtualDisk \ VD_Driver \ vd_filedisk.inf the command Install... And then restart your computer.
The principle of mounting images in a module created after installation virtual drive very simple: copy it into a folder in the file manager VirtualDisk(this folder will appear in Networked environment after installing the plugin) the necessary image files, and then to mount one of them on the virtual drive, double-click on this image, select the mode CD / DVD and click on the button To plug(fig. 10). With its help it will be possible to read images in ISO, BIN, IMG and NRG formats without mounting them into a virtual drive. This will allow, for example, to quickly view the files from the image (Fig. 11) and copy all or part of them to HDD for further work.

Data cataloging
It is not easy to navigate among folders and files stored on a variety of disks, because most users of CDs alone have dozens, if not hundreds, of pictures, documents, audio recordings, and even more. Therefore, without the use of some kind of cataloger that would provide the ability to quickly find out where the desired disk or a file, today is indispensable. If the cataloged data is relatively small, then it is quite possible to get by with the capabilities of specialized TC plugins.
Working with pictures is important. I often look at the pictures in this program. Of course peepers work faster. They have one drawback, they load up the RAM. It's good if you have 2 or 4 GB of RAM. Press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + q you will see how the display of files in the window has changed. If there is a picture in the window, you will see it.
If you hit the sequence TAB, + (or -), you can zoom in or out of pictures. You will not be able to fully view pictures in the CMIK system. Only the files in the RGB system can be viewed fully.
Right-click on the picture window. You will see a menu. Select item File-Save how. You can resave the file in a different format.
You can use a so called viewer. It's easy to turn it on. The way is File-Tools-Sketches
Now you have the Imagine viewer in front of you. It is easy to view pictures in it. Very convenient for viewing pictures.
If you go to properties, you can choose the size of the thumbnail of the picture.

But, as you know, there is no limit to perfection, and, keeping this truth in mind, the developers have shifted the "revision" of the program onto the shoulders of the users themselves. With the help of additional modules or simply plug-ins, Total Commander can be turned into a multifunctional Swiss knife, which has tools for all occasions. Moreover, some plugins not only expand the potential of the program, but may even serve as an excuse to abandon some programs that you previously had to use. It makes no sense to consider absolutely all additional modules for the file manager. First, there are a lot of them. Secondly, many of them have, if not completely the same purpose, then at least a very close one. Therefore, we will only tell you about the most interesting, in our opinion, plugins. Before proceeding with the listing of plugins, it will not be superfluous to mention the process of installing them. All additional modules for Total Commander are divided into several groups:
- Archiving plugins are additional modules that expand the program's capabilities for working with archives. Such plugins have the WCX extension;
- File System Plugins - These add-ons to Total Commander allow you to access disks or other digital media from file system which is not supported by Windows. These plugins look like WFX files;
- Internal viewer plugins - designed to expand the list of formats supported by the Lister internal viewer, called by the F3 or Ctrl + Q command. These files have the WLX extension;
- Information plugins - provide an opportunity to view the information stored in the file. They have the WDX extension.
If, for some reason, you need to connect the additional module manually, you need to open the program settings window (Configuration> Options) and go to the Plugins section. Next, using the button for the corresponding type of plugins, you should specify the location of the module you want to install on your hard disk. This plugin will be useful for those who are used to "keeping an eye on the pulse" of the system. With its help, you can monitor the state of memory, processor load, manage running processes, and also assign each of them its own priority. In a separate window, graphical dependencies are drawn in real time, which display the statistics of the system operation.
On XP and Vista operating systems, you can get information about open ports and currently established connections. The number of functions that AceHelper offers is not available in every process manager. So, for example, AceHelper displays information about the files used by the process, registry keys, drivers, etc. If necessary, you can unload the process from random access memory... After installation, the plugin appears as an icon in the network environment. By default, Total Commander can view a very limited number of graphic formats. Imagine shows detailed information about graphic file- resolution, color depth, number of frames (for example, for animated GIF), EXIF data (for JPEG files). Animated GIF files can be exported to AVI video file. Some image parameters can be edited, for example, change the color depth, rotate, resize the picture. This module is very convenient to use for quick viewing with subsequent renaming of images. In order to listen to music on a computer, of course, it is convenient to use a special player. However, when you need to quickly view several media files, it is very inconvenient to run a heavy utility every time. Using this module, you can listen and watch audio / video files of most popular formats today (asf, wmv, avi, mpeg, aiff, ogg and many others) directly on the Total Commander panel.
In addition to the fact that the file will be played, the window will display the information included in the ID3Tag V1 and ID3Tag V2 tags (codec type, bitrate, album information, etc.). The plugin is launched as a viewer by F3 or Ctrl + Q. Another type of program, the functions of which can be performed by a plug-in for Total Commander, is a disk emulator. Of course, such a plugin cannot replace Alcohol120% or DaemonTools, because VirtualDisk has a minimum of settings and cannot emulate protected disks. However, this module has one advantage - it can be easily installed and removed without causing any disruption to Windows. Its installation is slightly different from the usual plugin installation. In addition to the automatic installation, when viewing the contents of the archive with the VirtualDisk module, you must separately install the virtual disk driver. To do this, right-click on the file, open the context menu and select Install. This will require a computer restart and VirtualDisk is ready to go.
After installing the plugin, a folder with the same name appears in Network Neighborhood. Copy the image files to this folder before connecting. To connect one of the images in the list, you just have to try to enter it as in a regular directory. A window with settings will appear, where you can specify the letter that will be assigned to the connected image and emulation mode.
The program can emulate a disk in one of three modes. In HDD mode, images with the FAT or NTFS file system are emulated. In FDD mode, a drive is emulated; NTFS images cannot be mounted. Last mode CD / DVD emulation - emulates a CD / DVD drive. An additional read-only option is available in HDD and FDD modes. If you enable it, mounted images cannot be modified while accessing the virtual disk. This module will turn the file manager into mail client that works with POP3 / SMTP protocols. After configuring MAIL_WFX, the mailbox is displayed as a regular folder, which is accessed through network environment and the Mail icon.
If you go into such a folder, you can see the headers of letters in mailbox... It is the headers, not the letters themselves - this is done so that traffic is not wasted on spam. The list of headings is updated only after entering the box.
All letters that MAIL_WFX works with are in eml format. If Outlook is already installed in the system, The Bat! or another, the letter will open in the program with which it is associated given type file. By default, Total Commander automatically sets a set of columns for sorting letters, but in the settings you can set many more different columns - the message read flag, message priority, sender's organization, and others. MAIL_WFX has some limitations, for example, it does not work with a proxy, and the encoding of letters is not processed in the viewer, which may cause some letters to be displayed incorrectly. This add-on is in beta and therefore does not always work as expected. However, the author leads active work over MAIL_WFX, assuming in the future to provide the mailer with a lot of additional functions. With each new version Total Commander adds new features to the program that relate to archives support different types... Total Commander supports many popular compression formats, but not 7-Zip. This type of compression is gaining more and more popularity every day, because in terms of the degree of data compression, it often shows results that are even better than those of Winrar. The lack of support for the 7-Zip format is also inconvenient because, unlike the usual Zip archives or Rar, you cannot search for files in it. The 7Zip Plugin add-on solves all of these problems. It can be used to create archives in 7Z format, view their contents, and unpack them.
If you think you know everything that Total Commander, which you use on a daily basis, is capable of, you are wrong. The number of add-ons to this program is huge and is growing day by day. And who knows, maybe after many, many versions, instead of the usual file manager, a whole operating system, which will include all additional modules to the program.
