Smart watch pebble smartwatch review. The first smartwatch from Pebble with a unique display. Appearance. controls

Advantages: 1. Unlike most smart watches, they work for 2 weeks with active use and a month in just watch mode 2. Always show the time. the screen does not go out. 3. price. pebbles are one and a half times cheaper than most other smartwatches. 4. large community. a huge number of programs, games and hours of the day. 5. buttons. they are large and smooth. in my opinion, much more convenient than poking something on the touch screen. 6. waterproof. with them you can go to the shower, to the pool or to the river. 7. alarm clock. I forgot what a screeching alarm clock is on a smartphone. the watch wakes up with vibration, and it is not so annoying. 8. the creators do not forget about their brainchild and periodically release firmware updates with new chips. 9. The screen is perfectly readable in the sun. 10. Having configured Tasker, you can assign any commands to the watch to control the smartphone, from launching applications, ending with clearing memory and changing processor modes. Disadvantages: 1. there are no fake whistles. which is why the watch only complements the smartphone, but does not expand its functionality. in the same weights from the Samsung there is a heart rate sensor. 2. large enough sizes. but this is the disease of all smartwatches. 3. Someone may be scared off by a black and white screen. 4. the entry threshold is too high. even inveterate geeks will have to spend an evening or two to figure it out and set up normal synchronization with a smartphone. 5. There is no Russian language by default. is not a big problem, since the clock is stitched in 1 minute to custom firmware. 6. 8 slots for watch faces and applications. no other way. applications are installed and uninstalled in 5 seconds, but sometimes you don't want to go into the application on your smartphone once again and reconfigure something. By the way, all downloaded applications and watchfaces remain available in the smartphone application and in order to install them, you do not need to climb and download them from the store. 7. If the android is below 4.3, then the synchronization will have to be slightly confused. 8. There are a lot of applications and watchmakers, but there are no more than a hundred really useful and beautiful ones. 9. most often you will use it to see the time or set an alarm, because after a couple of weeks all these minute-by-minute notifications will start to bore you. well, you can also use it as a note-booker, a bicycle computer, an organizer with a calendar, a timer and a calculator, as well as to see the weather. 10.mighty (for now) native application for a smartphone. it is terribly dull. and this is the main reason to set up everything at once, so as not to climb into it anymore. Commentary: more a toy for geeks than a vital item. yes, pebbles are probably one of the best smartwatches at the moment, but the importance of smartwatches themselves is clearly exaggerated. Unlike most of the pebbles' competitors, it is a watch with advanced functionality, and not vice versa - a smart thing with the ability to show the time. I strongly recommend it to all geeks, I do not recommend it to ordinary "mortals".

Confirmation of purchase

So, as I wanted to receive the goods as soon as possible - I chose the most expensive and fastest delivery using UPS (this was my fatal mistake, but there is a silver lining). By the way, Amazon has a 2-3 day period for this type of delivery, if my memory does not lie to me. After confirmation of payment on the site, an approximate waiting period appeared - 30 days ... "How so ..?" - I thought and started communicating with Amazon technical support. It turned out that these terms do not apply to delivery to Russia, and they apologized and decided to return me $ 20 of the shipping cost. In fact, I probably had to wait for them as much as I would have waited by ordering them in China on Ali or another website. Delivery to the customs point in Russia took about 2 days and about a month she lay in the warehouse, waiting for her turn for customs clearance. By the way, UPS took over all the hassle of customs clearance, it was only necessary to send them a scan of their passports and fill out a couple of applications using the link they sent. After that, a week later I received my cherished package.

A bit of performance characteristics:

  • Monochrome, with switchable backlight, Sharp Memory LCD screen (for some reason called "E-ink") with a resolution of 144x168 and about 20,000 pixels
  • Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and 4.0
  • 4 keys and vibration motor
  • more than 7 days autonomous work and USB charging
  • triaxial accelerometer with gesture recognition
  • magnetometer
  • SDK availability and the ability to wirelessly download applications from the Pebble store
  • the ability to dive to a depth of 50 m
Completeness:
The package includes a box, the watch itself, a charging cable and all sorts of waste paper. The box, in comparison with the previous ones, has become a compact small white block.

Box and equipment

Appearance:
Outwardly, of course, they are not for everybody, but I like this style. I actually thought they were bigger. On my man's hand, not the biggest by the way, they look quite appropriate. And I deliberately chose white, knowing that it would get dirty more. Glossy plastic on the front side certainly adds a toy, but this watch does not pretend to be a status.

On hand + separately

Software component:
Everything here is limited only by the flight of your imagination. At the moment, a sea of all kinds of programs and skins for displaying clocks (Pebble called them watchfaces) can be found in the official Pebble / Pebble Time application on the phone. There is an official SDK for writing your own programs / watchfaces.

A few more watchfaces that I use

There is where to take a walk. Before connecting to a smartphone, you need to install the official application on it. Currently only Android and iOS smartphones are supported. I updated my watch to firmware 3.9.2 with the new Timeline interface, and now when you press the up / down buttons, you can see a small list of tasks for the future, or what was recently. On the previous 2nd version of the firmware, these buttons could be used to switch between the watchfaces loaded into the watch. It was possible to download up to 8 of them together with applications, which was not always convenient. All these lists in new firmware customizable, the application takes events from the built-in calendar. The limitation of 8 slots for installing the necessary whatsapp / programs has disappeared. As far as I understand, there is some kind of small cache of recently used applications, and if the necessary one is not on the watch, it is automatically loaded from the phone. The Russian language is currently not officially included in the firmware, but this is solved by simply installing the language pack through the application on the phone. A watch paired with an Android phone can show notifications from almost any application; everything you don't need can be turned off in the settings. And the most important thing for which they were bought is an alarm clock. You can use both the built-in standard alarm clock and installed application Morpheuz. I chose the second option because it implements the smart alarm function. At the same time, the application monitors the phases of your sleep throughout the night and wakes you up at the moment of the phase of REM sleep, which has a positive effect on your well-being in the future, and it’s easier to get up. The application works perfectly, no false positives or delays were detected. All statistics for the night can then be viewed in the application on the phone, or sent to yourself by email and viewed on the official Morpheuz website.

Autonomy, charging:
The manufacturer recommends charging the watch with a current of 500 mA. For this, a usb cable is included. The cable is non-standard and you need to be careful with it, because you will hardly find the second one in the first computer store you come across. It clings to the watch with the help of 2 neodymium magnets and holds very tightly.

charging, fastening

It takes me about 2 hours to fully charge my watch from a laptop. After charging, when the phone is connected, the watch keeps a charge for about 4-5 days, taking into account the vibro turned on, fairly frequent notifications and an automatic backlight that lights up for 3 seconds and only in the dark. But there is one drawback - the light sensor wanted to spit on fluorescent lamps and thinks that the room is still dark. I could not achieve the autonomy declared by the manufacturer from 7 days with full functionality, although if you turn off the bluetooth and use them only as a clock and an alarm clock, they worked for about 2 weeks, but this is already to the detriment of the functionality.

- and +
-Fast scratching plastic on the front side
-Lack of Russian localization out of the box
-High price
-Not "official" appearance

Rich and extensible functionality
+ High autonomy
+ Usable water resistance
+ Ease of use
+ Screen using e-paper (visible even in bright sun)
+ Good technical support and warranty
+ Build quality

Summing up:
I am very pleased with my purchase and do not regret it at all. I am completely satisfied with the functionality that the watch has. I can recommend them for purchase, if you are not deterred by the price. You can search on ebay / ali and find them the same, but without the box for a lesser amount. Thanks to everyone who was able to read to these lines!

P.S. I apologize for the quality of the photo, the glossy front is difficult to photograph, and without a flash you cannot see the screen itself. If you notice any inaccuracies in the review, or something is missing, please write to the PM.

Let's start with the background. The Pebble brand appeared in 2013 thanks to the Kickstarter crowdfunding platform. In short, this is a fundraising project for developers who want to industrialize their invention. And Eric Mijikowski, the creator of Pebble, did it. To start the production of the first Pebble watches, he needed only 100 thousand dollars, and he collected about 10 million in a month !!! Of course, the first Pebble looked not very good, the plastic case and angular shapes could scare away too discerning buyers, in whose minds the watch is more of a luxury item than a functional device. Nevertheless, it has sold over 200,000 copies worldwide. Pebbie watch, despite some flaws, such as appearance, "dampness" software and the lack of powerful distribution channels, had a number of advantages over other smartwatches:

All the time the screen is on, to see the time, you do not need to press buttons or wave your hand in front of your nose in a characteristic gesture.

- Excellent moisture protection, you can safely take a shower and swim in the pool. And even dive to a depth of 30 meters !!!

Compatible with iPhone and Android smartphones.

Free app store. Huge selection of free and quality Watchfaces.

Compatible with standard 22mm watch straps.

Long working time, no need to charge every day.

And of course, like other smart wearable devices, our Pebble receive notification of incoming calls, monitor the user's physical activity, have an alarm clock, stopwatch, timer on board and support the installation of third-party applications.

Pebble Technology did not stop there, and the following year released an improved version of the watch - Pebble Steel. As the name implies, the watch is made of metal; you can choose between a leather or metal strap. The next steps of the company are the release of Pebble Time and Pebble Time Stee, this is a watch with a color screen, which is also constantly on, moisture protection has not gone anywhere, the real operating time has nevertheless decreased, but for 4 days it will be boldly enough. In 2015, Pebble Technology released the Pebble Time Round, arguably the most stylish timepiece of the entire line of models. Finally, in 2016, Pebble announces three products, Pebble 2, Peble Time 2 and Pebble Core. V this review, we'll take a look at Pebble Time. Below are images of all released watch models from the company's official website, Pebble, Pebble Steel, Pebble Time, Pebble Time Steel, Pebble Round, Pebble 2:

V general information not a lot, the manufacturer does not spoil users with an abundance of technical characteristics.

Watchfaces and Apps for Pebble Time

In order for the watch to interact with a smartphone, you need to install the Pebble Time program, which can be downloaded from the Play Store.

Installing this program will allow you to receive all notifications from your smartphone on the watch: calls, SMS, messages of all kinds of social messengers, as well as set up the clock and go to free shop applications for Pebble. The program has four main tabs: Health, Watchfaces, Apps, Notifications. When you open the application, we immediately get to the Health section.

Health

It monitors physical activity and records sleep phases. The graphs show the number of steps taken, distance, calories burned and activity time, what time you went to bed and woke up, total sleep time, and sleep quality, that is, the watch records deep and light sleep.

Watchfaces

As the name implies, in this section you can install and configure the clock interface.

From this section you can go to the store and download the Watchfaces you like for free. For the convenience of users, all Watchfaces are divided into several topics, such as "Health", "Sports", "Digital", "Analog" and so on.

Basically, almost all Watchfaces are in English, but there are also those that support Russian. Here is one of my favorite Watchfaces

This Watchfaces is very functional, on the right side there is a "side bar" that displays the following information: battery charge, graphically and digitally, the number of steps taken for the current day, day of the week, day and month. In general, the look and functionality can be customized to your liking:

APPS

In this section, we can see what programs are installed on Pebble Time, as well as, we can go to the application store and download the necessary application for free. There are six sections in the store: Daily, Notifications, Healt & Fitnes, Tools & Utilites, Remotes Games, yes, yes, you can run games on the watch, Doom really hasn't been launched yet, but everything is ahead)))

Daily

Here are the most different programs for daily use, ranging from navigation "Maptastic", "Uber" and "Twebble" and ending with programs I do not understand. In fact, there are a lot of programs out there, I think everyone will be able to choose something that is necessary in everyday use.

Notifications

This section contains applications for all kinds of notifications, news applications, calendars, information about sports events, football, formula 1, etc.

Healt & Fitnes

The name speaks for itself, here are the apps for tracking physical activity and health. At the very top of the list are popular apps. Run-Runkeeper. This is a companion program, for everything to work, Runkeeper must also be installed on the smartphone. Misfit is a physical activity tracking and sleep monitoring app. And the Morpheuz app monitors sleep and has a smart alarm function.

Tools & Utilites

This section contains such applications as Timer, Stopwatch, Compass, applications that control the consumption of the watch battery, and even the companion application for Google Navigation and many other programs.

Remotes

This section contains programs that allow you to control music on your smartphone and GoPro camera. And not only. There are remote control applications for various equipment, for example, Sony TV Remote, watchNights, an application that controls Philips smart lamps.

Games

No matter how funny it sounds, you can play games on the Pebble watch !!! Of course, a sane person will not do this of his own free will. But such a possibility, nevertheless, is present.

How I use Pebble Time

I have been using Pebble Time for almost a year and a half. In fact, this watch is a very handy device. The main thing is that the screen is always on. The peculiarity of the screen is that the brighter the lighting, the brighter the screen itself becomes. V latest firmware Cyrillic recognition is implemented, all notifications come in Russian, contacts, when a call comes in, are also displayed in Russian. It is very convenient to read the message without turning on the smartphone. You can reply to SMS with a preset phrase, but English language... In theory, with the help of this watch, a lot can be realized, up to control of a smart home, but for me, how simple user, it was enough to find out the time, receive notifications, monitor physical activity and sleep phases. I also used an alarm clock, for me, a slight vibration on the wrist, wakes up more gently than the melody on the phone. By the way, in addition to notifications, you can see the weather on the watch, they also show the time of sunrise and sunset.

Without switching on the smartphone, you can see the results of physical activity and sleep phases. The watch has a microphone, and some Pebble Time owners take full advantage of this feature. I still cannot fail to mention such functions as a stopwatch, a timer and music control on a smartphone. In addition to a simple timer, you can use a tabata timer in your workouts, that is, an interval timer, for advanced workouts.

So is Pebble Time worth buying?

Despite the fact that the price of Pebble Time has dropped dramatically, and the watch can be bought in overseas internet stores for about $ 70, you should think carefully before purchasing. And the reason is this: Pebble Technology no longer exists. Founder Eric Mijikowski sold the assets of the company to the sports bracelet manufacturer FitBit. Many of the watch's functions are tied to online services. And the support is likely to end soon. The main functions will most likely work, but Android and IOS do not stand still, and it is possible that over time they will not be compatible with Pebble. But according to other information, FitBit promises to implement technical support watch Pebble. By the way, they hired Eric's team that remained after the layoff at the beginning of 2016. And perhaps they will release a bracelet or watch in the Pebble concept. I would like to hope so.

Pros:

Inexpensive smartwatch or fitness tracker.
The battery lasts much longer than almost any other smartwatch on the market.

Minuses:

The heart rate sensor is very sophisticated.
Not much different from the previous version of Pebble Time.

The first samples of the Pepple 2, from Pebble's most recent Kickstarter campaign, have recently been sent to backers.
On September 30, following the successful completion of funding for their third Kickstarter campaign, smartwatch pioneer Pebble began shipping the first wave of Pebble 2 watches to sponsors.

This model includes absolutely new feature watches, a heart rate sensor, which the company uses in its devices for the first time, as well as all the features of Pebble OS, significantly improved since the introduction of the Pebble Time line in early 2015.

Apart from the heart rate sensor, the Pebble 2 does not add much functionality compared to previous versions so I had to look for reasons to recommend it myself.

Specifications:

Battery: up to 7 days;
Sensors: heart rate sensor, three-component accelerometer, photo detector;
Screen: 1.26 inches, liquid crystal, e-paper, LED backlight;
Compatibility: 4.3 and up; iOS 8 and above;
Dimensions: 39.5mm x 30.2mm x 9.8mm, plus a 1.4mm projection on the back that houses the heart rate sensor.

In May 2016, I met with Pebble CEO Eric Migikowski at his company's Redwood City, California office. We were sitting across from each other in a conference room when Eric took out a device from a black Pelican container and handed it to me.

I remember he said to me something like "This is Pebble 2", but I did not immediately perceive his words. Despite this statement, I initially decided that I was holding the first smartwatch from Pebble. It was only a few seconds later that I began to notice small differences.

The side buttons on the Pebble 2 didn’t protrude that much, and were closer together. This watch was also thinner than the previous ones. It was impossible not to notice the heart rate sensor located on the back. He emitted intense green light and looked for a pulse.

I wore them for the next week, and I was nostalgic. It is a very comfortable watch, quite lightweight, so I sometimes even forgot that it was on my wrist until it was time for the next warning, and a slight buzz didn’t remind me that it was still there. You can still replace the standard Pebble 2 straps with your own 22mm straps.

Centre

The direct disadvantage that the creators improved the old design instead of completely reworking it became 1.25 inch display Pebble

2. Before I wore a 42mm Apple Watch with a 1.65 "screen for several weeks, and after that the screen on the Pebble 2 looks very small.

It's all about the heart

The more competition between smartwatch makers intensified, the more often Pebble was criticized for not rushing to expand the functionality of its products. Along with the Pebble Time line, the company launched Pebble Health, which is tailored to count steps and track sleep quality. But there was still no heart rate monitoring function in these devices.

That changed with the release of the Pebble 2. In the development of this watch, the company used an optical sensor similar to the one used by Fitbit and even its.

The user can directly on the watch display select the option that displays the regular reading of the number of heartbeats, or view the graph of the readings through the Pebble app, available for devices running on and iOS.

I tried comparing the Pebble 2 heart rate sensor with Samsung Gear IconX earbuds and Apple Watch Series 2, all three devices performed nearly identical in controlled trials. Test essence: I sat still, activating Workout mode on all three devices to ensure consistent heart rate records.

Aside from these few tests, I found a couple of random reports that while wearing the Pebble 2 my heart rate increased to 150 and then dropped back down to my usual 70-80 beats. And one report showed that my heart rate once increased to 197 beats per minute in the middle of the night while I was sleeping. I believe I would wake up if my heart really beat so fast in the middle of the night.

Looking at previous heart rate recordings on Apple Watch and old device, I never found a record of such high results, especially while sleeping.

Here's another case. I took the Pebble 2 off my wrist in the middle of the day and left it on the table. Later in the afternoon, I put them on again, and noticed that they wrote down the period that they stood on the table like a dream. Only I didn’t sleep. I didn't even wear my watch.
When I presented this problem to Pebble, a representative informed me that the watch cannot automatically detect whether a person is wearing it or not. And in order to prevent the recording of erroneous sleep data, the watch, when you take it off, should be put on recharge.

This is Pebble's no-compromise take, but is it good enough?

Pebble Timeline, quick access to your favorite apps and immediate launch are all presets for Pebble 2.

According to Pebble, the battery lasts seven days. My experience has shown that it holds for five days.
The screen is easy to read in the sun, which is what e-paper would expect. The buttons are resilient, and at the same time, it is not difficult to press them. Voice commands work reliably.
So the Pebble 2 scores high on all performance issues, but on the other hand, the same can be said for the Pebble Time. Same notifications, apps, display quality (plus color!), Battery life, voice control and the overall impression. Well, except that there is no heart rate sensor.

Buy now or wait?

The longer I used the Pebble 2, the more I doubted what to recommend in the end. At $ 129, the Pebble 2 is a bargain whether you consider it a fitness tracker or smartwatch.

Here's my conclusion: The Pebble 2 will suit those who are not yet sure if they need a smartwatch or a fitness tracker. All the basic features are here, and it won't ruin your budget.

At the same time, in November, Pebble is going to begin shipping the Pebble Time 2, with a set of features almost identical to the Pebble 2. But only the Pebble Time 2 will have a color display that is 53 percent larger than the current version Pebble Time (which means it'll be just as big as a Pebble 2 display).

So anyone looking for a bigger battery and an improved display should wait for Time 2 to be released, as this will be the exact Pebble smartwatch you've been looking for.

Thanks for the likes on the site! Always be a happy, athletic and active person! Write what you think about this, what gadgets do you use and why?

When the professionals of the Pebble company were just thinking over the project of their "smart watches", they, of course, hoped for the success of their brainchild, but did not expect that it would be so impetuous. The money for the implementation of this project was collected "from the world on a string" through the well-known resource Kickstarter. It was planned to raise several hundred thousand, but suddenly investors raised more than $ 10 million a month.

At the beginning of 2013, the first copies of innovative “smart watches” were delivered to customers, and since then gadgets have been actively spreading all over the world, delighting a huge number of people with their beauty, apparent simplicity and versatility.

Pebble Smartwatch Contact mobile device via a regular Bluetooth connection. It's nice that they are not limited to the possibility of reuniting with any one mobile platform, working with both Android smartphones and Apple iPhone... The operating system is called Pebble OS. You can answer calls, read messages, control your media player without taking your base device out of your bag or pocket.

Particularly noteworthy is the high-end black-and-white display, created with Sharp's ePaper technology and with very little power consumption. The Pebble Smartwatch can last five to seven days on a single charge. The case of the "smart watch" is made of high quality plastic, and the comfortable and durable strap is made of Soft Touch rubber. A big plus is the water resistance of the Pebble Smartwatch - the watch will remain intact, even if it lies on the bottom of the pool for some time.

It is worth noting that smartwatches are constantly being improved, and for sure we will see more than one generation of these unique devices.
