How to paint a satellite dish
With the onset of the summer season, and warm days in general, many lovers satellite TV conduct an audit of their equipment. Often, when visiting summer cottages, to set up satellite television, we had to hear a question from subscribers - is it possible to paint a satellite dish. Indeed, to watch television in summer cottages, customers often use used satellite dishes that have been used for many years, which eventually corrode and lose their appearance... But such an antenna can still long time, ensure a good signal level, and subscribers have an idea to restore a satellite dish damaged by corrosion.

If we talk about antennas, the surface of which “bloomed” under the influence of atmospheric factors, then you can, of course, tint such antennas on your own. And in case of serious corrosion, to ensure good level it is better to replace the receiving signal. Fortunately, they are now inexpensive, and such a purchase will not hit the family budget hard. But back to painting the satellite dish. Before the actual painting process, the surface of the antenna must be carefully sanded. This can be done with the finest sandpaper. Next, you should degrease the surface of the antenna with acetone. And here is the paint for this restoration need to be picked up in advance. The fact is that in the factory, radio-permeable paint is used to paint satellite dishes. And if you cannot find a similar one, then you will need to check the existing one for the effect of penetration of high frequency radio waves. To do this, paint a piece of thin paper with your paint and, after drying, conduct an experiment. We turn on in the menu of the receiver the mode in which the values of the strength levels and the quality of the received signal are displayed on the TV screen. And close the satellite dish converter with a colored leaf. If the signal does not drop, then the paint is radio-permeable, and it can be used to paint the entire surface of the satellite dish. By the way, it is better to do this with a small roller, carefully rolling the paint over the surface to achieve the minimum thickness of the paint layer. If necessary, the surface of the satellite dish can be coated with two coats of paint. This is how, in short, you can paint a satellite dish. But do not forget that the signal level from the new antenna will always be better, because over time, the old antennas not only rust the surface, but also change the geometry. Therefore, if possible, we recommend not to paint and restore, but to replace the old satellite dish with a new one.

Redecoration, painting of a satellite dish
1. The most important question: Can I paint with any paint? No, the paint must be radio-transparent! If the paint contains metals or their derivatives (oxides, etc.), then such paint is not suitable for painting antennas and can lead to a significant weakening of the received signal, up to its absence.
The radiotransparency of paints depends on the base and filler.
2. What kind of paint is suitable for painting?
The choice of paint comes down to the study of the composition of paints, tk. the radiotransparency property is not indicated on paints.
If the base is eboksidka, then the paint is conditionally transparent.
If the filler is organic or does not absorb microwave frequencies by itself, then such a paint can be used in combination with an eboksidka.
Acrylic enamel without metal fillers is suitable.
Printing inks are mostly metal based - therefore not suitable.
AC-599 is a special radiotransparent paint, sold in a minimum package of 50 kg.

There are many practical cases of painting antennas with ordinary PF-115 enamel in white and blue colors and even without a primer. 3. How to check the paint for radio transparency?
There are several ways to check the radio transparency of a paint.
Method of testing paint for radio transparency in the microwave:
The paint is applied to fluoroplastic. After the paint is dry, the paint radiotransparency test can be performed. We put a cup of water in the microwave and our paint sample on fluoroplastic is not close to each other. Microwave heating time - 5 minutes. If the plate is cold after irradiation, then the paint is radio-transparent.

Quite a quick and convenient way. The paint is applied to thick paper (this can be an A4 sheet of paper from a sketchbook, Whatman paper, etc.). We bring the sheet between the antenna head, closer to the head and check if there is no signal drop, if not or quite insignificantly, then the paint is suitable for painting the antenna.
4. Can I grind the antenna mirror with sandpaper?
Yes. The permissible deviation from the profile is 0.1 wavelength. All this is equivalent for both receiving and transmitting antennas.
The wavelength is calculated as follows: the speed of propagation of radio waves (it is equal to the speed of light) must be divided by the frequency, i.e. for 12 GHz - the wavelength will be 2.5 cm.
5. Should I be primed?
It is desirable but not required. Priming the surface increases the quality and durability of the paint.

ANTENNA REPAIR TECHNOLOGY
1. Removing old paint.
To do this, you can use special means such as auto remover or paint stripper that you can buy at any auto store.
2. Grinding.
Necessary to avoid further corrosion and the durability of the newly applied paint.
The first step is to process rusted places to white metal, first with a coarse sandpaper or a grinding attachment on a drill or grinder in the form of a brush.
Then uniform polishing of the entire surface of the mirror with an emery cloth # 150 or # 180.
Rust remover (Phosphoric Acid or RustStop) can be used to remove corrosion prior to sanding.
3. Degreasing and dust removal.
It is carried out to prepare the surface for painting using a cloth moistened with acetone, thinner, white spirit, refined gasoline, etc.
4. Priming and drying.
The primer, like the paint, must be radiotransparent. Primers containing a filler such as barite (GF-021) are not suitable, barite is used as an absorber of high-frequency radiation.
You can use imported light gray soil, auto primers in aerosols can also work, the main thing is to get acquainted with the composition, you can also perform a microwave test.
Primer in aerosols, like paint, is preferable to painting with a brush.
The primer is applied evenly in a thin layer over all surfaces, from the beginning with long distance, then from close, avoiding smudges.
If there are leaks, wash them off with acetone, etc.
After priming, let the antenna dry for 3 to 6 hours (see instructions for the primer) at a temperature close to 20 ° C.
5. Painting and drying.
Painting is similar to the primer, we adhere to the same requirements as for the primer, dry and continue to use the antenna.
And a few more words about painting:
? Of course, it is better to apply paint from an aerosol, paint and enamel to apply exactly without streaks with a brush is difficult, it is better to use a small roller even then.
? When painting from a spray can, first apply to the end of the antenna along the entire circumference, then paint the face of the antenna. The spray can only be enough for this (taking into account that you will apply paint in 2 layers). The reverse side can be painted with any other paint for metal.
? When rust appears, it is better to deal with it as early as possible, without starting, without waiting for the rapid spread of corrosion. This is the fastest and cheapest way of local touch-up of a separate area than a total repainting of the entire antenna.
? Due to the fact that the thickness of the mirror is less than 1 mm, when rust appears on one side, it often appears on the opposite side, which requires painting on both sides. So if there is a rusty spot on one side, check if there is one on the opposite side (it may not be visible under a layer of paint).
? Continuous grinding of the entire antenna from old paint is more preferable, because early rust is not always recognizable by the paint coat.
Remember that the cost of repainting the entire antenna is almost equal to the cost of a new antenna and also takes a lot of time and also requires patience.
? Painting the antenna is justified by the fact that: you have a lot of time and nothing to do, your hands itch, craving for creativity, the ability to paint in a specific and original color, drawing or writing or having all the necessary materials.
Currently, satellite dishes are already installed in many private and apartment buildings. Over time, such antennas begin to rust, the paint begins to peel off, the appearance is lost, and the signal also disappears, but as they say, there is nothing eternal. We installed our antenna back in 2008, during all this time it has served us with faith and truth, not requiring special attention and care. After 10 years of service, it corroded. At home, I decided to put the antenna in order, namely to completely paint the satellite dish and, if possible, tune it. Why if, because I haven't done this before, but it was interesting to try.

As you can see in the photo, it does not look very good, the paint peeled off on the plate itself, and all the galvanized elements of the antenna rusted. A few more years, and possibly through holes would appear.
Having examined the antenna closely, I decided not to follow the path of least resistance, namely to clean and paint in place, without dismantling and disassembling, it would certainly be faster. But since I did it for myself, I decided to spend time and do the work better, even if I will spend a little more time.
Dismantling the satellite dish
Before starting the dismantling, I recommend that you remember, and it is better to take a photo, the location of the antenna itself, as well as all its elements. This will help to understand when assembling what is where and with what, of course, this is not the most difficult product, but if you have not encountered this before, the photos taken in the early photo will help you during assembly and installation.
My antenna is located at an accessible height on the roof, it is easily accessible from the stairs, so by unscrewing the nuts, I removed it without any problems.
However, care must be taken when working at height! If necessary, it is better to ask an assistant to help you remove it. The antenna itself is not too heavy, but cumbersome, so caution will not hurt.
Dismantling the antenna
Some threaded connections were so rusted that they could not be unscrewed, they had to be cut off with a grinder.
Rust removal
I cleaned the antenna from rust with an accessible tool that was at hand. I carefully cleaned the plate over the entire area. The cleaning was carried out not only on rust, but also on the entire surface. The fact is that under the paint in places they are sometimes not visible to the eye, there are foci of corrosion and they must be cleaned.

Then I processed the plate and all its parts with a rust converter. After the surface was dry, I re-cleaned the plate for reliability.
Old bolts and nuts, on the other hand, are almost unsuitable for re-installation.
Painting a satellite dish
Now you can start painting the entire satellite dish.
Experts usually advise a special radio-permeable paint for painting. I did not have such paint, but I had the usual white enamel PF-115 at hand, and I painted the entire antenna with it.
In my opinion, the main thing is that the paint is of high quality, namely, it is resistant to fading and other atmospheric influences. It doesn't matter what you paint with a brush or roller.
After painting, she acquired this look.
As you can see from the photo above, one layer of paint is not enough here, so after the paint has dried, I decided to paint it again and that's what happened.
I also painted the rest of the parts twice; I just washed the plastic parts.
Assembly and installation of a satellite dish
We carry out the assembly in the same sequence as the disassembly. Since the old fasteners were unusable, I used the new bolts and nuts that I found in my own. If desired, you can buy new galvanized ones.
We fix the heads on the multifeeds, put on the fasteners, while we do not tighten it too much, we do this whole procedure on the ground, finally we screw it on the roof after tuning the antenna. After assembly, we proceed to installation on a pre-installed pipe.
Using the marks (on the old paint) on the pipe and the photo, I established the previous location (its direction) of the satellite dish. Then I tried to set up the satellites, starting with the central head, it is responsible for SIRIUS. By rotating slowly and moving closer and further away from the dish, I tried to capture the maximum signal quality. The signal quality was obtained maximum in the region of 80 (lower scale), this is quite enough. The data that is displayed in the photo in the lower right corner when you press the menu button on the remote control of your tuner.
The other two extreme heads, I did not succeed in setting up, I had to resort to outside help... The specialist with the device quickly set up the remaining two heads (converters). Therefore, if you are not confident in your abilities in terms of tuning the antenna, you can safely turn to specialists for help.
After the antenna is tuned, you can finally fix the wires, and also finally tighten all the bolts and nuts. All bolted connections after they were finally tightened, I painted over with paint.

That's the whole painting of a satellite dish, of course, not everything is easy as it seems, of course you need to make an effort and time. For the time spent, I think a couple of days off is enough, it all depends on how quickly the paint dries, my enamel dried for a day. Regarding the signal quality, I did not notice the difference between the factory coating (new) and after painting with enamel, the signal quality did not get any worse. Your satellite dish is rusty and the paint is lagging behind it - do not rush to buy a new one. In many cases it is sufficient to clean, sand and paint it.

As is known at the plant, satellite dishes are painted with special powder paints. Negatively charged particles of powder paint adhere to the antenna and, under the influence of high temperatures, melt and paint the desired surface.
We do not need such complex technologies and we simply cannot implement it at home.
So what do you need to paint a satellite dish at home?
To begin with, we thoroughly grind with fine emery paper. I think it will be superfluous to polish. The main thing is not to damage the antenna itself (make dents or bend).
For painting, you need to purchase an appropriate radio-permeable paint. Any will not fit and guessing will not always work. For this it is better to pick up.
Apply a layer of the test paint on plexiglass or on a sheet of paper, wait until it dries and conduct an experiment.
We fix the signal quality indicator on the tuned antenna. We fix our sheet, while covering the converter, and look at the signal level again. If the quality has not changed, you can safely use this paint.
Another check option. In the microwave oven, cover a glass of water with our painted plexiglass and turn it on for 5 minutes. If the plexiglass is cold, the paint is suitable.
I think it will be better determined according to the first option, since the signal attenuation may be small, but we need the entire useful signal, while the accuracy of the indicators is more accurate. Besides, if something goes wrong with a microwave oven, it's a pity.
It is advisable to prime the surface before painting. We carry out the same series of experiments with the primer.
It is better to apply the paint with a small roller in two layers, avoiding drips. Back part mirrors can be done with a brush.
Matte paint will be better than glossy paint. In summer, the sun shine gathers in a bundle and melts the lid of the converter or multifeed. Do we need it? Of course not. Therefore, we choose matte.
There is also an option with a spray can of paint for cars. This paint will turn out to be strong and durable.
