To optimize the performance of your device, you should update your device software to improve features and fix bugs. If an update is available, the icon appears in the status bar. You can check for updates manually and also schedule an update.
The easiest way to install software updates is to use the device's wireless connection. However, some updates are not available for download over the air. In this case, the Xperia™ Companion software for PC or Apple ® Mac ® computer is required to update the device.
Do the following before updating your device.
- Make sure you have enough free space before starting the upgrade.
- If the device is used by multiple people, you must log in as the owner, that is, the main user, to update the device.
- Due to system and application updates, the functions of your device may be presented differently in this user guide. The Android™ version may not change after the update.

- Open the Xperia™ Companion app if it doesn't launch automatically.
- Make sure your computer is connected to the Internet.
- On PC: If a software update is found, a pop-up window will appear. Follow the instructions on the screen to update the software.
Oreo for Sony is finally available for some users. Google released Oreo back in August and then Android 8.1 in December 2017, finally phone owners are slowly getting the update. And while Sony is one of the fastest manufacturers, not all smartphones have received Android Oreo. Here's everything we know so far about Sony's Android 8.0 update cycle.
Surprisingly, Sony was the first manufacturer other than Google to release Oreo since the Xperia XZ Premium. The update offered performance improvements, new features, and bug fixes. Now the Xperia X and Compact are getting the update. Then expect some updates in early 2018.
Android 8.0 Oreo is full of new features, including updated notifications, improved battery management, and support for picture-in-picture mode. All this will be available for Sony smartphones. During the Oreo announcement, Google confirmed that several partners were already working on updates, Sony being one of them.
Popular smartphones from all major manufacturers will receive a free update to Android 8.0 Oreo in the coming months if they haven't received it already. First, Google updated its own devices, then the manufacturers began beta testing phases. Most of them have already ended, but updates are still slow to roll out. Right now, Sony is ahead of most other manufacturers in the speed at which updates are distributed. Additionally, Sony has already released two Oreo-powered smartphones out of the box, the ZX1 Compact and Xperia XA1 Plus, in late 2017.

And while it's great that Sony has already launched several smartphones with Google's latest software update, it doesn't help current owners in any way. Users of the original Xperia X line, Xperia XZ Premium, as well as Xperia XA, are wondering when they will get their hands on a software update. Well, we have good news. The update is available from the first week of February for most of you.
Luckily, earlier this year, Sony unveiled a complete update map. Here is the list of phones for Android 8.0 Oreo update, some phones may be listed later. The company has confirmed updates for the following devices:

As you can see above, Sony is preparing to update a long list of devices that will receive Android 8.0 Oreo sooner rather than later. This line includes premium flagship smartphones, budget devices and everything else offered by the manufacturer. Including Touch, an Android-enabled projector. This is an encouraging sign for Sony smartphone owners.
However, each smartphone on the Android 8.0 Oreo update map is about 14 months old or less. If you're still using a smartphone that's about two years old or older, you won't find it listed. So while we're excited to see a wide range of phones for the update, devices over a year old are on the verge of dropping support.

As we said, several Sony smartphones have already received Android 8.0 Oreo. Plus, the impressive Sony Xperia XZ Premium received Google software back in October. This is a month faster than any other Android manufacturer. We're in February 2018, and important flagships from manufacturers like LG and Samsung are still running Android 7.0, and Oreo is a long way off.
So what about the rest of the users with other phones? The company has become one of Google's best partners in terms of software updates. Sony first showed off Nougat with the Xperia X Performance last year and is now moving fast with Oreo.
However, we do not currently have a time frame for any other Sony phones. The fact that some of them have already received an update is certainly a promising sign, but nothing else came out at the end of 2017. We expected updates in November and December, but this did not happen.
After all, expect the Android 8.0 Oreo update on Sony devices in the next 1-2 months, maybe sooner. If the company provides details on the full update schedule, we will update this information. In any case, updates will arrive in the first half of 2018 and hopefully most of them will be released before the end of March.

From time to time, the company's developers create new firmware versions to update Sony Xperia smartphones. New versions bring some changes in the software plan, allow you to achieve better performance and overall functioning of the device. I have repeatedly received questions about how to install an update on Sony Xperia of different models, how to update the device when a new firmware version has arrived, or how to restore a smartphone if some kind of failure has occurred in its operation.
Over the air installation
The simplest method that does not need a detailed explanation. While the smartphone is connected to the Internet (preferably stable Wi-Fi), it will independently conduct a quick analysis for updates, or you can do this by going to Settings - About phone - Software update or by entering the Update Center application. There you will see if there is a software update and if it is, then just click on the arrow, after which it will download and automatically update. Everything is simple and hassle-free. The smartphone battery must be at least 50% charged at the time of installation.

I usually update my Sony Xperia Z2 with a branded one and I recommend this method to you. I note right away that the battery needs to be charged up to 50% minimum in order for the application to allow the update.
And so, we simply connect our Sony Xperia to a personal computer on which the specified application is installed, after which it will automatically check for an update and if it is available, it will notify you. Even if you accidentally close the information window, don’t worry, because the message “Phone / tablet software update available” will be indicated at the top in large print by clicking on which you will proceed to install it, or go to the “Support Zone” menu item - in “Software Update phone\tablet” press “Start”.
After that, the whole process is intuitive and simple - just read what is written, what stage is going on, and press buttons like “Next”, “Accept”, “Yes” and the like, agreeing to the terms. There should be no problems here, below are screenshots of the process.
After that, a window will appear as below and the smartphone will turn off, followed by the start of the update.
At the end of the process, you will be prompted to disconnect the phone from the USB cable and turn it on, and by clicking on the “Next” button you will be notified that the update operation is complete.
Restoring software toSonyXperia
Previously, the SUS (Sony Update Service) application was used for recovery, but after the termination of its support, now it is done using the same PC Companion. There are different situations when you need to do a system restore to its original working state. For example, something began to work poorly, turned off, and so on. There are many situations when you can return to a normal working state only with the help of recovery. Please note that in this case, all data from the memory of a smartphone or tablet will be erased!
And so, in order to restore Sony Xperia, we connect it to a PC, launch “Companion” and go to “Support Zone” - in “Phone / tablet software update”, click “Start”. You will be notified that the device has the latest firmware, however, if problems are observed, you can restore it.
