nokia lumia 820 no. total overview of possibilities. A web browser is a software application for accessing and viewing information on the Internet.

So far, it makes no sense to compare the performance of smartphones on Windows Phone 8. The fact is that all the models on the market, with only one exception (HTC 8S), work on a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 (MSM8960) dual-core processor with a frequency of 1.5 GHz. Including the flagship Lumia 920, and the hero of our review Lumia 820. And as long as the operating system has not managed to acquire a million layers of abstractions and frills, the device works extremely quickly. With memory, the situation is similar, the smartphone is equipped with a gigabyte of RAM, like almost all other models on WP8.

Flash from Lumia 820 is not very much, only 8 gigabytes, but there is a slot for microSD cards. Hot-swap, as I mentioned, is not provided: to get to the slot, you have to first remove the battery.

The smartphone supports NFC technology, everything you need is already on board. Unfortunately, the usefulness of this feature so far tends to zero: there are very few applications for working with tags in the Marketplace, and even those are clearly not intended for ordinary users.

LTE

There are already a lot of smartphones with LTE support, but almost all of them work with other frequency bands than those allocated for communication using this technology in Russia. Lumia 820 is a very rare exception. Theoretically, the device can connect to Megafon's 4G network, but in order to be able to talk on it, the operator must support CSFB technology - then when you call, the phone will switch to 2G / 3G mode. Alas, so far Megafon has not had time to set up the hardware on its side accordingly. But, apparently, there is not much time left to wait - in early January, the company will roll out an LTE version of the Samsung Galaxy S III, and if it works, the Lumia 820 will also be able to.

Camera

The Lumia 820 has an 8-megapixel sensor and Carl Zeiss optics with f/2.2 aperture. The pictures are not bad, at the level of other mid-range smartphones. Sample images below will help you get an idea of the quality.

    In use for about 10 months, it fully met the expectations both in terms of hardware and in terms of support from the manufacturer. Hardware: - Beautiful screen, still impressive every time you unlock it. In the dark, paired with the OS interface, it looks simply cosmic. - The case (black matte) showed itself quite well, the phone fell countless times due to the specifics of operation, does not look "killed." - The buttons are located in their places and there is no degradation for almost the year is not observed, everything is clear. - The voice and external speaker withstood all the comparisons that one way or another was subjected to during this time, at the level. - I have no problems with audibility - High maintainability. The protective glass changes separately from the screen, and therefore the broken glass (sometimes) cost me $ 50 with work,

    Well, everything is obvious here: 1. Design. He's on top. It differs from the faceless remnants of many other manufacturers. 2. WP8 system. Everything is extremely smart and logical. It has its flaws, but overall it's just great. 3. Screen. AMOLED display + Cleat Black do the trick. In the sun, the screen is readable, in the help it's generally beautiful. I constantly want to unlock the phone and climb in it. 4. Sound. Loud built-in speakers. Complete earphones very much pleased. The quality is top notch. If someone suddenly does not know, then here is the control: 1 click - pause, 2 clicks - rewind to the next track, 3 clicks - the previous track. 5. Camera. For its price range, the quality is excellent. Both video and photo, especially if you adjust the white balance. 6. Holds a charge for a long time (a day confidently). 7. Price. At the time of writing

    1.Good assembly. 2. It is convenient to hold in your hand, 4.3 inches is a comfortable size. And by the way, every 4.3 has a camera, although it is VGA, but it is enough. 3. Individuality. 4. A good responsive screen, you can even work with gloves or any improvised object (pen, keys, shoes) and the resolution of 800x480 is enough. 5.LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.1, NFC, Wi-Fi Direct Maps, Navigation, Radio Mix and so on. 9. SkyDrive is a cool topic, it needs to be developed. 10. Headphones in the color of the case, although I have black, but yellow and red ... it's cool in general, not every manufacturer approaches the image so thoroughly.

    1. It catches the net well. 2. 3G / LTE do not fly out as it was on the Radar. 3. Good camera and flash (if there is a manual white balance), video in full hd 30fps. 4. Good speakers and sound in good headphones. 5. Amoled display (very pleasing to the eye) and thick glass (fell glass down on the tile and not a single scratch). 6. Removable battery + memory card slot. 7. Off-line navigation and accurate positioning (very helpful abroad). 8. Many different covers and cases. 9. Many proprietary applications from Nokia.

    The ability to change panels, colors, screen, speed of work (for a couple of weeks it was not even possible to "freeze" it, although it is used very quickly and mercilessly) Wireless charging, took it for a try - and bought it. The quality of the sound in the player. There is no such meaty bass as with the poweramp and android, but the sound is much cleaner and more pleasant. Nokia Music! This is a balm for the soul...

    Compared to 920,925,1020, there is a slot for a memory card, the dimensions are more compact, and the camera is not much inferior! I would buy Nokia Lumia 820, I like it more than 920,925 or 1020!

    I must say right away - the phone is a bomb and I can recommend it to friends. When I chose a phone in the Yandex market using "advanced search parameters" - no matter how I refined myself - in all the lists of phones selected by Yandex, I invariably found this Nokia! It has everything you need and even more. - The radio is there and it works, although it is not indicated in the reviews! - Internet over 3G works almost always whenever needed. Perhaps this is normal, and I just used to come across "bully" android devices that had the Internet falling off after several hours of inactivity. But everything is great here! - Nokia Navigator with a license for the whole world! - DOES NOT BRAKES anything and nowhere! - A pleasant interface, in the description of which the main word will be the word "smoothness" - a very nice animation of the program menu, and the location

    Unstable reception in 3G mode, it seems that when 3G is turned on, the phone prevents it from working on its own. It was in 3G mode that I saw a couple of random reboots, some marvelous inexplicable glitches and a couple of times I received an SMS with the text "you called". There is no such thing in 2G.
    Also, 3G hits too hard on a small battery. You may not live to see the evening, which is practically impossible without 3G (only if you don’t torture it in your hands).
    Therefore, I recommend going to 2G and switching to 3G only when necessary. (this is all possible problems of my instance)
    - The front camera is rather weak, although this is obvious from the characteristics.
    - Almost 100% of problems with autonomy are caused by incorrect software or incorrectly installed software, and at the moment there are no tools in the OS to quickly calculate it. Account for def

    1) Sound problem
    2) Screen problem. Defects in the oleophobic coating occur quite often (it's like an indelible strip on a black background - you wipe it off with a special napkin, it reappears a little later), it can be seen when watching a video as some kind of influx
    3) Bluetooth - did not allow to connect with my Samsung, cut off the connection, it just didn’t even reach the attempts to transfer
    4) ADATA memory cards, for example, 10 class 32gb, are not seen by the phone (it turns out that it only sees cards from specific manufacturers) - this card was seen by any devices on bad and android ...
    5) Maybe I'm crooked, but before I didn't have such problems with technology (I calmly dealt with setting up any phones, computers and hd players, including firmware updates), but here I spent 5 hours trying to synchronize

    1. There was a jamb with duplication of songs in the playlist. That is, I throw 1 track into the phone, and I get 4 identical tracks in the list. Treatment - edit tags. I did through the player on the computer AIMP3. Selected the entire folder with music - right-click - AIMP3 - edit tags. In the program itself, we do not touch anything at all. The tags may or may not be changed. Just select all the files in the window and click save. All. There will be no duplicates.
    2. Lack of navigation buttons in a standard browser. Namely, the keys forward. Treatment - we put another browser.
    3. There is no possibility to play music by folders.
    4. General volume.
    There are no other major cons for me.

    Disadvantages, this is a separate story. After Android, everything is different here and for many it will seem like a big disadvantage. But it should be so, because this is a new Axis.
    1. I lacked only one application, this is 2GIS, because the City is a complete non-offline hat that you can not install on your phone.
    2. One end speaker, I would like a couple.
    3. A synchronized list of contacts, at first I was horrified, but then I figured it out, it seems to be normal.
    4. There is a problem with social networks, if you closed the application or put a lock on the screen, then you become offline and when unlocked, Contact or ICQ reconnect to the network. Correspondence is very inconvenient to conduct.
    4. There is no indicator of missed calls (in general, the light bulbs do not signal missed calls)
    5.One level loud

    1. Battery - with 3G and GPS barely enough for a day. 2. The camera module is heavily scratched, the black cover after 2 weeks of wearing in a pocket around the edges of the matte place became glossy. 3. A lot of dust gets into the gaps between the screen and the cover. 4. The front camera is no good. 5. The headphones in the kit are bad (there are no bottoms at all, and the ears cut the top).

    Here, rather, there are not even shortcomings, but rather problems that can be solved if you wait a little or bother. The Windows system has simplified a lot for users by hiding many settings so as not to dig with crooked hands. It's all wide open for Android!)) Maybe this is for the best. ==
    - I turned it off once - the "back" button stopped responding. I had to take out the battery.
    - There are no in-depth settings where you could see the status of GLONASS / GPS, turn them on / off with separate widgets, as well as Wi-fi, Bluetooth. But it seems like you can also download and install separately.
    - It is completely incomprehensible how the NFC module works. He does not read metro tickets, as I understand it, due to the peculiarities of WindowsPhone. But I tried to transfer objects (contacts, pictures) to another t

If the flagships of Windows Phone 8 are well-known, these are HTC 8X and Nokia Lumia 920, then the devices of the "second wave", HTC 8S and Nokia Luma 820 are still in their shadow. We decided to correct this unfortunate misunderstanding and consider the Lumia 820 in more detail, despite the fact that the "first look" has already been published. So, we have a simplified version of the flagship, and what it has lost, let's try to see in the review.

Nokia Lumia 820:: Overview:: Design and Features

We will talk about the technical characteristics later, but we will start our story traditionally from the exterior, because the line of new Lumia devices continues to delight with its brightness against the backdrop of the “gray mass” of modern smartphones and touch phones. Of course, the requirements of the OS manufacturer do not allow a WP-device to stand out cardinally, but Nokia achieves this due to bright interchangeable casings that form the body of the smartphone. The bright back of the device on the one hand complements the strict lines of the front panel, but at the same time its corners and edges are smoothed. Due to them, the device itself lies well in the hand when talking, accessing the menu and working with it, but this does not exclude soiling. The device really attracts fingerprints from all directions. Oh yes, we completely forgot about the overall dimensions. They amounted to 123.8 x 68.5 x 9.9 mm and 160 grams of weight, which can be described as average parameters by modern standards.

Case materials - mostly plastic: the above-described back casing, which forms the structure, the front panel glass that covers the display and its surrounding elements, as well as a thin frame along the contour, combining "strictness" and "brightness". Note that the smartphone is collapsible, but it will take considerable effort to “undress” it (which, however, is a plus for the design - no backlashes, no squeaks). Probably, the manufacturer did not think that the user would often poke into the inside of the tube.

Since we've taken it apart, we note that the battery (BP-5T, 1650 mAh) falls out of the slot right away - nothing holds it, and we see two card slots: microSIM and microSD, located to the right of the battery compartment. Fastening of both cards of the sled type: pressed, snapped, pulled out.

On the front panel we are waiting for the dominant, 4.3-inch AMOLED, ClearBlack display with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels and the ability to display up to 16 million colors. The display, capacitive, supports Multipoint-Touch and works out touches perfectly, incl. Gloved. Brightness with a margin, colors are juicy and natural, viewing angles are close to maximum. Within the framework of the OS, it is difficult to feel the quality of the picture, but in third-party applications it appears in all its glory: despite the not very stellar resolution, the image is of high quality, viewing angles are close to the maximum.

Above the screen at the junction with the encircling edge, we see a speaker hole and below, to the right, the front camera. Below the display are the branded OS touch keys, “back”, “start” and “search”, as well as a tiny microphone hole, shifted to the left from the center and barely noticeable.

The left end of the device is devoid of elements, while on the right there is a tangible set of volume rocker, power (display) and camera button. The key travel is average, somewhat tight in our opinion, but for my tasks this is a plus. Only a 3.5mm audio jack is placed on the upper end, and the lower end is given over to the interface microUSB and the call speaker slot (by the way, the speaker itself is located inside on the rear panel and the sound channel follows the curved line of the casing down).

On the rear panel, we see only the vendor's logo - below and the camera console - above. The latter includes the lens in the center and the LED flash bulbs on the left.

Nokia Lumia 820:: Overview:: User interface

Recall that the smartphone runs on the latest OS from Microsoft, Windows Phone 8, and we could stop there, because we recently talked about the platform itself in the HTC 8X review. The differences are only in the pre-installed applications, maps, sound and camera module, because there is not much room for creativity here.

So, the lock screen has many faces, it will allow you to choose a static or dynamic background, notifications and even set a password. This element of the system is certainly interesting.

The desktop with the familiar “modest” notification area is a set of squares, “titles” (live tiles), which in turn can be both shortcuts and active applications. The color of the titles can be selected in the settings (20 options), and the size - on hold. A sheet of squares can stretch down as long as you like, and there are only two themes - white and black.

The main menu is also made in the form of a vertical list: here is a list of available items, icon + name. The "search" column to the left of the icons remains and "infringes" on the size of the menu - the option migrated from WP 7.5.

Inside applications and settings, the "vertical" logic is preserved - headings, which often do not fit on the screen, sub-items are made in smaller font, and the current option is printed in the smallest font.

Nokia Lumia 820:: Overview:: Phone service

The dialer is standard, without embellishment, just like the call log. The latter is a single list of subscribers or numbers, indicating the type and date/time.

The list of contacts can traditionally be synchronized with network storage in order to pull out an existing notebook from there. Sorting of subscribers is diverse, and the list of fields for new records tends to the maximum.

Synchronization of updates from all configured social networks with the ability to filter on the spot: you can get data on the status of friends and acquaintances here.

Nokia Lumia 820:: Overview:: Messages

Messages have the form of dialogues, as it is now fashionable, but there is no division into sms / mms - it all depends on the content. Facebook chat is also connected, and the settings are typical. At the same time, the keyboard is very amateurish: it is made in the colors and lines of the interface, but it requires a habit of typing. Considering that it is impossible to change it, the decision is bold.

E-mail clients for Google accounts and others are represented by separate applications. If the names differ, then the logic and functionality are similar: everything is at the level of modern solutions, from folders to content.

Nokia Lumia 820:: Overview:: Organizer, office

Office applications are represented by branded MS-programs, nothing from Nokia in this regard. So, this is, of course, a corporate office, including mobile versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint & OneNote with functionality cut down relative to desktop versions and picky about large files. Also in the presence of alarm clocks, calendar, calculator, wallet. In general, the section is diverse and includes everything that you may need in everyday life.

Nokia Lumia 820:: Overview:: Communications

The smartphone operates in the following frequency bands: GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, WCDMA 850/900/1900/2100 MHz, LTE 850/900/1800/2100/2600, HSPA+, HSUPA, has support for Bluetooth 3.0 , Wi-Fi: IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n, GPS, Micro-USB 2.0, NFC. No problems were recorded during the operation of wireless modules during testing - everything was within the “reference values”.

Nokia Lumia_820:: Overview:: Maps

The cartographic service of Nokia devices is a significant competitive advantage over other vendors. However, to get started, all components need to be installed from the Marketplace, or download current maps. So we have maps, transport, Nokia Drive + in Beta status and even the City application.

Each of the components is presented in the main menu, easy to work with and does not cause difficulties in mastering.

Nokia Lumia 820:: Overview:: Internet

Browser - Internet Explorer. The application is functional and easy to understand. Except for the fact that the address bar is located in the footer of the screen, everything in it is logical: there are tabs, history, favorites, a move to the desktop, as well as numerous settings. There are practically no third-party applications in this field, but you can work with this.

Nokia Lumia 820:: Overview:: Camera

The interface of the 8-megapixel camera is made in the best minimalist traditions of the OS: the main settings are on the bottom or left/right (depending on orientation), and the advanced ones are hidden under the ellipsis. For photos and videos, the points are logically different. The pictures of the Lumia 820 do not stand out with anything outstanding, rather a typical middling compared to other solutions. Shooting near is not always correct, although focusing passes, and the flash is turned off in low light, it still blinks.

Test shots are presented below - study.

Panoramas and so-called panoramas have also been added to the photographic service from Nokia. smart photo. Following MS guidelines, the apps are in the menu and offer downloads from the Marketplace on first launch, rather than being integrated into the camera.

The photo gallery will open access to both local content and frames on the network (the main thing is to set up accounts).

Nokia Lumia 820:: Overview:: Multimedia

For music and video, there is a single hub, which is offered to be filled when connected to a PC. Those. they will let you listen to the downloaded MP3 file, but they will not put it in the library - such is the policy. Video can also be put into memory, but conversion cannot be avoided. The player itself is simple in design and perception: there are all the necessary functions and settings. The sound quality is up to the mark - not ideal, like that of musical solutions, but overall quite good. There is no FM radio in the device, pay attention to this.

Nokia music is another nice "carrot" from the manufacturer: access to an extensive database of media content will allow you to listen, buy or download many songs. There is support for the so-called. “mix radio”, where you can create your own or listen to already compiled lists of songs.

Nokia Lumia 820:: Overview:: Applications and games

We reviewed the entire set of additional applications in the course of the review. The amount of pre-installed software is one of the limitations of MS.

The games section contains links to 4 expensive demo games, the ability to link to an xbox account and access to the store. On the other hand, maybe this is not bad: neither the operator nor the vendor imposes their choice on you - decide for yourself and download the content to your liking.

"Children's Room", an innovation of WP8 - the ability to give access to the younger generation on your smartphone to certain applications, such as games. It is important that without a password set to unlock the smartphone, the essence of the “chip” is lost.

Nokia Lumia 820:: Overview:: Hardware specifications

The Limia 820 hardware platform is based on a dual-core Snapdragon S4 1.5 GHz processor, the smartphone has 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of flash memory, not counting support for microSD cards and SkyDrive cloud storage. Do not forget that access to the memory slot is not easy, and only content can be stored on it, it cannot be used for programs. The speed of the interface is high, from scrolling the interface to launching and running programs - it's hard to find fault here. Tests of the available benchmarks will be provided with screenshots if they tell you something.

Nokia Lumia 820:: Overview:: Impressions and conclusions

The battery life in the conditions of metropolitan operators (MTS, MegaFon) with a classic user load will be about a day. During this time, you will be able to make and receive calls for 30-45 minutes, write a couple of dozen messages, check mail, social networks several times, as well as listen to music and take a few shots. The indicator is not stellar, but expected for a modern gadget, given that classmates work a similar number of hours.

During testing, we had no complaints about the radio module, the device regularly caught the network and did not lose it without visible obstacles.

The volume of the ringer and the power of the vibrating signal are not bad, without a noticeable margin in our opinion, but in general within the normal range. The earpiece and microphone do their job in the same way.

Nokia turned out to be an ambiguous device: on the one hand, this is not a versatile flagship Lumia 920, but on the other hand, it will be more than enough for most users. Strict appearance "from the face" borders on bright and varied (replaceable) back panels. An almost monolithic body, but it is difficult to disassemble, you can’t approach the card. An innovative OS from a major manufacturer, but with a large amount of restrictions and a small amount of software at the moment. Reduced by 5,000 rubles, the price relative to the flagship is still higher than comfortable amounts for a device of this class against the backdrop of Android solutions. Therefore, "think for yourself, decide for yourself" whether to get involved in this bold experiment with Windows Phone or wait for its evolutionary development.

It is worth noting that the phone belongs to the second generation of the Lumia line. This is due to the fact that a completely new operating system is installed on the smartphone - Windows Phone 8. The phone was paired with Lumia 920. We will talk about it in the next review.

To begin with, we will briefly go over the characteristics of the device, and then we will talk in more detail about its charms, which, it is worth noting, are very numerous.

And so, the phone works thanks to the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor, with a frequency of 1.5 GHz. Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 are the first devices on which Nokia is testing multi-core processors. Supports GSM/3G/4G-LTE networks.

In the box, the user will find a battery with a capacity of 1650 mAh. According to the manufacturer, this should be enough for 14 hours of talk time and 330 hours of waiting. But in real life, such a battery should last for three to four days of moderate work. With very active use, the battery will last a maximum of two days. However, these are very good indicators.

The screen of the device is made using Amoled technology and displays 16 million pixels. Resolution 480x800 pixels. Diagonal - 4.3 inches. It doesn't use PureMotionHD+ like the Nokia Lumia 920, but it does have ClearBlack. We must not forget about the phenomenal sensitivity of this device. It can be operated even if your hands are gloved or you are using a resistive stylus. The screen supports up to 10 simultaneous clicks, and the viewing angles are much better than the flagship Lumia 920. I was very upset and surprised by the lack of Gorilla Glass protection. If the screen can be pressed with anything, it is logical to assume that it will scratch very quickly.

It is worth noting a very pleasant innovation - support for microSD cards. This will help expand the standard 8GB of memory up to 72GB. If this is not enough for you, you can use cloud storage, which gives you another 7GB for free. The amount of RAM is satisfactory - exactly 1 GB.

Nokia Lumia 820 inherited the camera from the first generation. It has an 8-megapixel sensor with a maximum photo resolution of 3264x2448 pixels. There is a dual LED flash that perfectly illuminates dark corners when shooting. This camera can shoot video in Full HD format, the maximum resolution of which is 1920x1080 pixels. For video calls, there is a front camera. Its resolution is 640x480 pixels.

Among other functions, it is worth noting the presence of an NFC module, Bluetooth version 3.0, a gyroscope, a compass, a light / proximity sensor, an accelerometer and a GPS sensor. Bluetooth module deserves a separate word. Now the phone (finally!) Can send and receive files. This means that Windows Phone has finally got rid of annoying DRM protection.

Let's talk about the set.

The box in which the Lumia 820 is packaged is excellent. Materials are not cheap and high quality. Opening it, we immediately find the device itself, neatly packed in a plastic bag. There is a cardboard cover under the phone, and under it is a charger (more precisely, a plug and a USB output), a USB cable and a headset in the same color as the device. Interestingly, although the body of the Lumia 820 is monolithic, here you can change the back cover. For example, if you are tired of vigorous red, you can purchase green, yellow, black, white, blue or gray. The number of flowers is very pleasing.

The phone is quite big and heavy. Despite his size, he does not strive to constantly jump out of his hands and fall. There is nothing new in terms of controls - a standard volume rocker, a lock / on / off button, a camera button and three touch buttons. Mechanical buttons do not create backlash, do not stagger and do not cause discomfort during use.

Of the outputs - only 3.5 mm for sound and microUSB for synchronization. The memory card slot is conveniently hidden under the back cover. Not only that, to get through to him, you also need to get the battery. Not very convenient, if you take into account the fact that the lid sits very tightly and tightly. You have to work hard to get it off. But thanks to this, there are no crackles and gaps on the phone. In the same place, under the battery, there is a slot for a SIM card. SIM card type - microSim.

As already mentioned, the phone is running Windows Phone 8. We will not talk much about its capabilities - more on that in a separate review. Let's just focus on the main points.

Now the OS is not tied to the standard screen resolution - the manufacturer can decide for himself what resolution will be installed on the device. The start screen has been changed - now you can change the size of the tile yourself from large to medium to small. The variety of color themes is now greater. The lock screen has also been updated. It now displays more information, such as who the last missed call was from, facebook friends, and more. If you swipe left on the lock screen, the so-called "children's room" will open. In it, parents can choose which applications, music or videos will be available to children. The phone can now be updated over the air (FOTA), has an IE10 browser and true multitasking: the process does not pause, but continues to work in a minimized application.

Nokia specifically raised the level of mapping services with the release of the Lumia 820/920. Nokia Maps now works offline, but only if you have previously downloaded maps to your phone. The application gives complete information to the user about traffic jams or public transport. The Drive app is now also available for pedestrians. A new technology of augmented reality has appeared. The application "City" is responsible for it. It is worth pointing the device's camera at the street and it will immediately show all the sights around the user - cafes, restaurants, theaters and more. A very useful application in large and unfamiliar cities.

Let's sum up our little review. Expensive Nokia phones have always been distinguished by high build quality, excellent software and photographic abilities. The Lumia 820 is no exception. For about $500, we get a smartphone with an 8-megapixel camera, an NFC chip, a new OS, exclusive services, memory card support, a good processor and a good body. But there is also a fly in the ointment: a very tight back cover, the absence of GorillaGlass (in my opinion, this is the biggest drawback), the absence of profiles (one volume for everything - calls, music, games) and weak case plastic. In general, the phone left a positive impression. I hope that buyers of this smartphone will not be disappointed and will be satisfied with the purchase.

In September, Nokia announced a line of new smartphones based on the Windows Phone 8 operating system. The new products included the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 models. And if the first is a technological flagship, then the second is a kind of "people's" smartphone on WP8 at an attractive price. We'll talk about it in our test review!

In fact, a completely different smartphone was expected in the edition of our project - Lumia 920. We were waiting for it with a breath! This is still the flagship of the Finnish company, and one of the most advanced WP-smartphones in the world. However, the promised gadgets from Nokia itself, and then from the retailers of MTS and Svyaznoy, never reached us. And if Nokia guaranteed us that they would send the gadget before the New Year, and in Svyaznoy they wildly apologized and said that the smartphone was in short supply, then MTS admitted that it was not worth waiting for the promised. As compensation, the operator provided Lumia 820, but we, upset by this fact, did not take a “bribe”. Moreover, this handset has already been tested in our editorial office for a week. Well, okay with digressions!

During the presentation of the first Nokia smartphones on Windows Phone 8, more attention was focused on the older model: a larger display, a molded polycarbonate body, an excellent camera, and high performance. But in fact, Nokia Lumia 820 turned out to be no worse than its older brother. In some places, this device seemed even better. It is more compact, and costs 5,000 less. At the same time, the hardware and functionality are identical. But first things first.

Dimensions. Contents of delivery

id="sub0">

Despite the large touch screen and powerful hardware, the new Nokia Lumia 820 is quite compact. It does not look thick or overly bulky in length and width. The dimensions are 123.8 x 68.5 x 9.9 mm, and the weight of 160 grams does not feel excessive. The weight of the device is evenly distributed over the area, the device does not tend to slip out of the hands.

The smartphone comes with:

  • Smartphone Nokia Lumia 820
  • Battery BP-5T (1650 mAh)
  • USB Charger Adapter
  • Interface cable miniUSB connector CA-185CD
  • Stereo headset that matches the color of the smartphone case

Design, construction

id="sub1">

Nokia Lumia 820 looks very youthful, really standing out on store shelves with its brightness and constructive minimalism. Fortunately, there are several color options for the device: black, white, red and yellow. Everyone can choose their favorite color. At the same time, the differences are only in the color of the back cover. By the way, they are interchangeable. Nokia promises a wide variety of options, including protected panels with rubber inserts and support for wireless charging. Something already appears in our stores.

The edges of the device have rounded edges, thanks to which the smartphone fits comfortably in the hand. The front panel is monolithic, the back cover is plastic with a glossy finish. Traces and fingerprints appear on it instantly, but we did not find scratches and scuffs. The coating is resistant to mechanical damage.

On the front of the communicator you can see the speaker for voice calls. Nearby is a position sensor in space (G-sensor), digital compass, proximity sensor, light sensor. On the right there is a front camera, with which you can make video calls or take pictures of yourself.

Most of the front face of the smartphone is occupied by a 4.3-inch touch screen. Surprisingly, it doesn't get very dirty no matter what you do with it. Under the screen are three touch control buttons: "Back", "Windows" ("Home") and "Search".

The volume rocker is located on the right side face. A little lower there is an on / off button and a screen lock, and even lower is a camera key. The connector for connecting the interface cable and the microUSB charger is located on the bottom end. Nearby there is a speaker for playing calls and external sounds. The built-in speaker has an average volume margin. In most cases, it is well audible, so as not to miss a call in a noisy room.

On the top edge, you can find a hole for connecting a 3.5 mm headset. There are no controls on the left.

On the reverse side, there is an 8 megapixel camera eye with autofocus and an LED flash (double high-power short-pulse LED flash).

But with the back cover they made up their minds. It is attached so rigidly that it is difficult to remove it the first time, and there are no clues. You need to rest your fingers against the ends and the camera module. If the representatives of the stronger sex can dare such a forceful operation, then we hardly represent women and girls in this work. In general, you need to suffer!

Under the cover are slots for a microSD memory card and a microSIM card.

The build quality of the Nokia 820 is good. We have no issues with performance. Everything is done well. "Lumiya" does not crunch when compressed, the lid does not play and does not bend. The model is assembled at a factory in China.

Graphic features

id="sub2">

The Lumia 820 uses a 4.3-inch capacitive touch screen. It's Clear Black AMOLED. Thanks to the Clear Black technology, blacks are deep, without gray distortion, in addition, visibility in the light is maximum among all smartphones. The sensitivity of the display is high, a light touch is enough to fix it. There is support for multi-touch technology. The display resolution is 480x800, it displays 262 thousand colors. Thanks to the G-sensor (accelerometer), the screen can automatically change its orientation. The display is protected by durable glass. As practice shows, it successfully prevents scratches during the operation of the smartphone.

The screen has good color reproduction, brightness, contrast and viewing angles. The brightness of the backlight is adjusted automatically, but at the same time there is a manual setting. In the sun, the display fades, but all the information is well read.

As noted earlier, the picture changes its position depending on the location: vertical or horizontal. But this does not happen in all programs and applications.

Of the chips, it is worth noting the Super Sensitive Screen technology. It is used to control the device not only with finger touches, but also with nails, styluses, etc. The degree of sensitivity can be selected in the menu, if you do not want the screen to respond to any touch, this can be turned off. In a pocket, the screen cannot respond to touches, the proximity sensor is responsible for this, you should not worry about this.

Thanks to Super Sensitive Screen technology, the smartphone can be operated even with gloves on. This is very important for our winter! True, it takes a little practice and getting used to use. Navigating the menu, launching applications, making calls - all this worked without problems in our case.

Keyboard and input

id="sub3">

As noted earlier, the Nokia 820 has three touch buttons for Back, Windows and Search. The rest of the control is carried out via the touch screen. In this case, you will not find keys for receiving and rejecting a call. You can only accept or reject a call using the touch screen. It is implemented quite simply and intuitively.

Typing is carried out using the on-screen QWERTY keyboard. It is quite comfortable even in the portrait orientation of the display - and all this is the merit of the large screen.

In general, you can enter text in several ways: using a QWERTY keyboard in a horizontal or vertical layout. To dial a special character, just press the "&123" button. To switch the layout from English to Russian, there is a dedicated "ENU" or "RU" key to the right of the space.

Interface and navigation. Functionality

id="sub4">

Nokia Lumia 820 runs on Microsoft's new Windows Phone 8 operating system. In the future, it can be updated via the Internet to newer versions.

Of the innovations of the new OS, it is worth noting the appearance on the lock screen of weather, large clocks, notifications, as well as “live applications”, for example, Facebook - photos, statuses are shown, depending on how you set up these very live applications.

As for the user interface of the smartphone, then everything is standard. The desktop is presented as a scrollable vertical column of squares and rectangles, the so-called tiles, displaying functions, messages, and program icons. It can be either a shortcut to a specific application, or a link to a person from the contact list, to a photo, to a web page or service. Unlike Windows Phone 7, tiles can be resized here. Up to four icons can be placed on one line.

You can install a separate page as a tile on your desktop. If you like, say, reading news from Yandex or Kommersant, then you can go directly to the last page you read by clicking on its shortcut on the desktop without launching your browser and without digging up a journal entry. Alas, the user does not have the ability to change and decorate the desktop with various pictures. The background here is purely black or white! You can only change the color of the design or the lock picture and that's it.

At first, I was surprised by the absence of indicators at the top of the screen showing signal strength, battery status, and similar system notifications. But after some digging, I found them. To display, you just need to click on the top of the screen and that's it, they will appear automatically.

If you try to swipe the screen from right to left with your finger or click on the arrow at the bottom of the display, a list of installed programs will open. They are not divided into directories, but are displayed in a long alphabetical list. To add new tiles to the main screen, just hold your finger on the corresponding icon for 3-4 seconds - a context menu will appear with a choice of actions.

The general style of switching between applications is reminiscent of turning pages, and all this happens almost instantly. The speed of the interfaces is high, and the effects are quite appropriate, but you need to hook the audience with something.

In Windows Phone 8, the developers tried to take into account the comments and changed the views of programs running in the background. So, by holding the "Back" button, you can access the list of running applications. If they support the multitasking function, then when you click on the thumbnail, the program will start in the same form in which you exited it. Thus, you can work with almost all applications.

It is noteworthy that for two weeks of active operation Nokia 820 never hung. I didn't find any performance issues either. The device proved to be surprisingly stable. This is largely due to the new OS and hardware platform, which we will talk about later.

Phone features

id="sub5">

First of all, these include "Phone", "Contacts", "Messages".

Hub "Contacts" is a data with detailed information about phone numbers and subscribers. A record can have two dozen fields, whether it is a last name, first name, patronymic, mobile number, home phone number, email address, date of birth or anniversary, social network accounts, microblogging services, etc. The search in contacts occurs immediately in all fields of the client, that is, you can dial a number, first name, last name, etc.

I would also note the close integration of the Messages hub with social services. All correspondence with a specific person is displayed as a dialogue. In this case, it does not matter how the next message is sent or received - via SMS or chat on Twitter, Facebook, etc. Photos in the phone's address book are synchronized in the same way. They come from social media.

Dialing a number can be pulled out to the screen of squares, or you can use the “Phone” hub for this. The use of call services is intuitive and clear. From experience, I really didn’t like it when you need to make two movements to answer a call, and not one: the first - to unlock the screen, and the second - to answer directly.

Internet and Microsoft services

id="sub6">

The standard delivery includes Internet Explorer 10 with HTML5 support, Canvas and hardware acceleration, as in the desktop version of the Internet browser. The browser works quickly and without glitches. Of the features: the address bar is located at the bottom of the screen and it is much more convenient to get to it if you work with the device with one hand. The IE10 browser loads pages very quickly, supports modern work algorithms, which is supposed to be done by a progressive browser.

Microsoft online services (music, games, office, mail, etc.) are accessed using Live ID. At the same time, with a Russian account, as it turned out, you can’t use everything that is in the Marketplace store. Only applications for Russia and the CIS are available.

Windows Phone 8 offers a range of cloud-based features. The new office suite Office 365 is built into the OS. There is basic support for the main programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) out of the box, you can create and edit documents right on your phone, without the need to install a paid package.

Multimedia features

id="sub7">

Nokia positions Lumia 820 as a convenient multimedia tool. Among other things, the manufacturer focuses on high quality sound. In headphones, the device really sounds very, very worthy. The device can be used as a good player. True, it is better to replace the native headset with something more decent.

There is a separate hub for playing music and video. The media manager is quite cumbersome and requires you to install itself to sync to your computer (much like iTunes).

Of the unique programs, it is worth noting the Nokia Music service. He knows how to play the music already available on the phone, as well as show announcements of upcoming concerts of various artists and bands.

You can also access the music store and free music streaming service on the Mix Radio Network using your Nokia Store account. Mix Radio has ready-made playlists for a dozen genres. The feature of the service is that these playlists can be downloaded for local listening.

"Mixes" can be updated regularly, there are no restrictions. The only thing is that you can switch songs no more than 6 times per hour. Instead of mixes, you can also listen to compositions similar to your playlist: in the "Create" item, enter, for example, "Infected Mushroom", and the program will offer a set of similar artists, compositions. All this looks clearly more advanced than other manufacturers. Here Nokia has definitely succeeded.

Lumia 820 supports unconverted video.

Installing new programs

id="sub8">

New programs and other applications can be downloaded for free and installed from the Marketplace over the Internet directly from your phone. There are now more than 200,000 applications in the Marketplace. The appearance of the program is intuitive, there is a search for applications by category. They, in turn, are divided into "Programs" and "Games". Within each of the sections there is also a division into categories.

Over the past year, the number of programs and games for smartphones on WP has increased significantly, and the prices for paid content have decreased. So, among the most popular and in demand in the Marketplace there are free clients of social networks Vkontakte, Facebook, Skype, Twitter, Foursquare, Opera browser, offline navigation from Nokia and much more.

Photographic opportunities

id="sub9">

The Lumia 820 has an 8 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash that can also be used as a flashlight. It is worth noting the Carl Zeiss optics and high aperture F2.2. The camera interface is ascetic, simple and intuitive, there is a standard list of settings.

It is worth noting that the smartphone camera allows you to get high-quality pictures only in natural lighting conditions. When you need to take a photo in low light conditions, using the flash causes the frame to be blown out, and not using it significantly reduces the sharpness.

Of the additional functions of the camera, we note the ability to create dynamic photos by taking a series of pictures and adding them into one. Here you can analyze objects in the frame and remove them, for example, strangers, etc.

The device can record video in H.263/MPEG4 format with a resolution of 1280x720, 800x480, 640x480, 320x240 at 30 frames per second. Videos are of good quality, moving objects are not smeared. Lumia 820 supports formats and codecs: 3gp, .3g2, .mp4, .wmv, .avi (MP4 ASP and MP3), .xvid (MP4 ASP and MP3).

Navigation and maps

id="sub10">

The Nokia 820 includes the Nokia Maps map service, which includes the standard map view as well as in-car navigation. It is worth noting that detailed maps of a larger number of Russian cities with a population of more than 5 thousand people are available here, there is no need to talk about Europe - they are there in full, similarly for other countries.

When the program is launched for some time, information is loaded from the base stations of the operator and GPS satellites about the location, current time, and maps are loaded. After receiving the coordinates, you can determine where you are at the moment. In the program menu there is a search for objects by textual information, address, geographic location, history, contacts stored in the phone. All objects on the map are displayed with the corresponding icon. It is possible to display street names and other information in Latin. There is support for searching in Cyrillic.

The user can choose a map display option - 2D or 3D image, day or night mode. In addition, a “satellite view” display option has been added, it is similar to what we see in the maps of the Here.Net service.

Nokia Maps contains information about public transport traffic - the maps are overlaid with a metro map, as well as lines for trolleybuses, trams, etc.

When navigating, large bold arrows display a pre-designated route. Of the pleasant features, you can find information about the weather, the situation on nearby roads, etc.

Of the chips, we note the Nokia City augmented reality application, where you select one of the categories (food, hotels, attractions, transport, and so on), and using a compass and GPS positioning, the smartphone software identifies the names of shops, restaurants, metro stations, etc. and shows all information about them, including phone numbers.

In general, navigation using Nokia maps is similar to other similar services, only here maps can be used offline. To do this, do not forget to download the maps to the phone's memory.

Speed and memory

id="sub11">

Nokia Lumia 820 is powered by the fourth-generation Qualcomm Snapdragon platform: dual-core 1.5 GHz MSM8960 Krait processor, Adreno 225 graphics core. The chipset is made using 28 nm technology and is completely identical to that used in such Android flagships as Sony Xperia T, HTC One X. The amount of RAM is 1 GB.

The installed hardware allows the communicator to work without any hitches. The speed of the interfaces, as well as the loading of programs and utilities, fully meet the requirements of the time. Everything works quickly and without brakes, and special design effects enhance the experience. Subjectively, the Nokia Lumia 820 is much faster than the iPhone 4S or Samsung Galaxy S III. This is largely due to the fast interfaces implemented in the operating system, and you should not forget about the hardware component.

8 GB of internal memory is allocated for data storage. You can expand this volume with the help of memory cards. In addition, each smartphone owner is offered a 7 GB virtual flash drive in the SkyDrive service. The disadvantage of such an offer is that you will not receive information without access to the Internet.

Communication options

id="sub12">

You can connect to another computer or the Internet via Wi-Fi or a USB interface cable [version 2.0].

Nokia Lumia 820 supports wireless accessories and Bluetooth 2.1 headsets with EDR and A2DP, including wireless stereo headsets. Alas, you cannot transfer files from phone to phone via Bluetooth.

In addition to supporting packet data transfer using GPRS and EDGE technologies, the smartphone supports 3G. The machine can be used as a modem. The maximum data transfer rate in this case will be up to 42.2 Mbps in the 3G network. There is support for LTE networks, however, while working with 4G in Russia will not work. Based on this, Nokia has disabled the ability to switch to 4G networks until such time as operators enable full switching between voice and data transmission in LTE networks.

You can access the Internet from your smartphone via Wi-Fi 802.11 b / g / n, and also turn the device into a Wi-Fi access point. In addition, there is a built-in GPS / A-GPS and a navigation service with online (offline) maps.

Working time

id="sub13">

The Nokia Lumia 820 is powered by a 1650 mAh BP-5T battery. Under extreme conditions of use, with the number of calls 20 - 30 minutes a day, sending a dozen SMS, listening to an mp3 player through a headset for about 4 hours and always on Skype and IM. Appart worked 19 hours. That is, with very active use, the smartphone will have to be charged at the end of each day. These are very worthy indicators. With an average load, the smartphone will work for 1.5-2 days. The battery is charged in an average of 3.5 hours.

Results

id="sub14">

Nokia Lumia 820 turned out to be a very interesting device, despite the fact that initially there was a condescending attitude towards it. He showed himself on the good side: fast, functional, with a large and high-quality screen. And if some time ago smartphones on Windows Phone lost to competitors in terms of the number of programs and applications available for installation, now there is practically no difference. This made WP smartphones more attractive. Subjectively, the Nokia Lumia 820 is faster than its competitors on iOS and Android.

Of the special chips, it is worth noting cloud services from Nokia, which expand the basic functionality. These include Nokia Music with free internet music, Nokia Maps with free navigation and maps around the world, and Nokia Books with hundreds of e-books.

There are also a couple of downsides. Firstly, someone may not like the plastic back cover. Secondly, while the device does not support Russian LTE.

So far, Nokia Lumia 820 is the most affordable device on Windows Phone 8.

Advantages:

  • Fast user interface
  • High-quality screen with the ability to control the stylus or gloved hands
  • Availability of Nokia Music and Nokia Maps

Flaws:

  • Rigid back cover
  • Multitasking is not for all programs

On the day of publication, Nokia Lumia 820 could be bought at a price from 18 000 rubles.
