Digital multimeter MS8211 from KBT. MASTECH MS8229 - A good multimeter for hobby or five measuring devices in one Conclusions and impressions

Digital multimeter MASTECH MS8229 is a universal measuring tool and is an indispensable assistant for both repair and maintenance of various electronic devices.

If you buy every necessary measuring tool, firstly, they will take up useful space in your bag or desk drawer, and secondly, the cost of each purchased tool will be unjustifiably high as for a tool that I will use only occasionally.

This multimeter combines 5 measuring instruments, in addition to the usual multimeter (measuring the values of AC and DC current, AC and DC voltage, resistance), it can also measure temperature, humidity, sound field level and ambient light level. This model It has been produced for more than a year and there are both positive and negative reviews on this multimeter, but I am an amateur and a small error in the readings will suit me perfectly, so I purchased this particular model.

Specifications

The package came in a standard, gray bubble-walled bag, the package was slightly wrinkled.
The package includes the multimeter itself, good quality probes, an external thermocouple, 3AAA batteries, instructions for English language and a certificate for the device with the verification date 2014.9.3. What is missing is a case with a belt clip.

A couple of years ago I bought a simple multimeter for my home to replace the old one, in which the rotary display broke and the battery ran out. I bought a small rubberized one with a leg, the second multimeter will not be superfluous, since sometimes you need to take measurements and take two readings of various parameters at once.
The display of the MASTECH MS8229 is larger than that of a small multimeter, but the height of the digits is the same, the readings of humidity and temperature are displayed at the top, and when switching the rotary switch of measurement modes, these readings are always visible, the temperature can be displayed in ° C and ° F. The manufacturer also provided the display with backlighting, which is very convenient in low light conditions. The backlight turns on when you hold down the green HOLD / B.L button for a long time, but there is an inconvenience, since the readings are fixed and to continue using the multimeter, you must briefly press the button again.

In order not to describe all the assignments of the keys of this multimeter, I suggest that you familiarize yourself with the shoot in.

I want to note several important functions that this multimeter has, namely: sound and light warnings that teach and help those who have not yet figured out how to use the multimeter correctly, while switching measurement modes, a red backlight lights up at the bottom, around the terminals of the probes, indicating thus, where exactly the probes should be connected.

It is worth paying attention, since different stores supply the device in different configurations, and if you decide to purchase the MASTECH MS8229, check with the seller what is included in the kit and which probes, I received other, but very good probes, marked on the 1000V 18 AWG cable, resistance 0.2 Ω. For comparison, I put them side by side from left to right: good probes with a thin tip, probes from the multimeter kit, cheap probes from the inexpensive multimeter kit.

The weak point of all multimeters is the probes, cheap ones usually have high internal resistance, I recommend replacing them with better ones. The probes from a cheap multimeter do not fully enter, and the terminal illumination does not turn off, but this does not interfere with the operation of the device itself.

All built-in measuring sensors are located at the top of the end of the multimeter: temperature sensor, humidity sensor, microphone and light meter.

● Lux- in this mode, the light meter turns on, then you need to set the multimeter to short distance from the light source, real-time measurements will be visible on the display.

● dB- in this mode the noise level is measured. Using the built-in microphone, I measured the noise of the fans in operation. system unit, the readings are 50.3 dB, the fans indicate the noise level, now I can roughly imagine how much noise is in these figures.

● TEMP- in this mode, you can measure the temperature using a thermocouple. This thermometer is good because it is not afraid of high temperatures and you can measure the open flame at the burner. The thermocouple plugs into the probe connectors.

The multimeter itself runs on 3x AAA batteries, which are included in the package, but I immediately replaced them with better quality batteries. The battery compartment is located at the back under the hinged leg; to install the batteries, you need to unscrew 2 screws. There is also a 10A fuse.

Now let's take a closer look at what the multimeter itself consists of and open it. To do this, remove the green rubber cover and unscrew the 4 bolts. There are 10 trimming resistors inside, I do not recommend knocking down the factory settings.
Workmanship printed circuit board not bad, the installation is done neatly, the flux is washed off, the plastic molding is good.

If you are not interested in this functionality, then you may like the younger model MASTECH MS8228, which has an infrared thermometer, but there is no light meter.

And if you need to reset the readings to a computer, an example of how you can connect a multimeter via RS232.

Conclusions and impressions

The MS8229 multimeter is versatile and with a relatively small size, it contains a variety of measuring instruments that are useful for hobbies or households.
There is still nothing to measure the correctness of measurements of built-in devices, since there are no such devices at hand.

There will be questions, ask with pleasure I will answer. I plan to buy +96 Add to favourites I liked the review +64 +129

Measurements of physical quantities

Before work, it is necessary to carry out the following actions:

  1. Insert the battery into the instrument.
  2. Place the meter on a flat surface using the support on the back of the meter.
  3. Inspect the device, all probes, insulation of conductors for mechanical damage.
  4. If the parameter of the signal to be tested is unknown, set it to the highest range by turning the switch.
  5. Before measuring the current, it is necessary to check the fuse, turn off the power supply to the circuit before connecting it to the tested devices.

To measure AC or DC voltage, follow these instructions:

  1. Connect the black test lead to the COM input jack, connect the red test lead to the V.
  2. Set the switch to the voltage measurement position.
  3. Also connect the test leads to the voltage source to be measured.
  4. Numbers will appear on the display.
  5. Take readings. If desired, you can fix them by pressing the HOLD button.

First, the instrument displays fluctuating readings at a low voltage range, since the meter is a highly sensitive device. But when connecting the probes, a real result will appear.

OL may appear on the screen. It means that the readings have exceeded the range, so it is expanded.

Before measuring AC or DC parameters, power off the circuit under test. Then connect the meter to the circuit in series.

To perform the current measurement procedure, do this:

The temperature in the device is measured on 2 scales: Celsius and Fahrenheit. Accordingly, fix the multi-position switch at the level of the scale you want to get the result: ° C or ° F. Connect the red thermocouple wire to the VmA input, the black wire to the COM input jack. Note the temperature value.

Diode test and non-contact voltage detection

The meter indicates the voltage drop across diodes, transistors, and other semiconductor devices.

To test semiconductor diodes, you need the following:

  1. Connect the black probe to COM input, red - to the VmA input.
  2. Set the multi-position switch to the diode test position.
  3. Connect the red probe to the anode of the diode under test, connect the black one to the cathode.
  4. Remove the diode forward voltage drop parameter that appears on the screen. If the probes are open, the display will show OL.

Non-contact detection of hidden wiring - additional function multimeter. To connect it, simply bring the upper part of the device to the tested object at a distance of 40 mm. When the device detects voltage, the LED will indicate.

A high input impedance does not introduce any special deviations in the measurement process and thus shows the high accuracy of the multimeter.

The device uses an ADC with measurement of values by the method of double integration.

The multimeter is a high-quality, convenient, understandable device for home use. But when working with it, electrical safety measures cannot be neglected. With proper care of the device and observing all the rules of safe use, it will last a long time and without problems.

No records are similar.

Greetings to all friends on the site "Electrician in the House". I think each of us got into a situation where it was necessary to measure electrical parameters, and there was no suitable device at hand. For example, how to measure the voltage on a dead battery or check the integrity of the heating element? Many people ask for help from friends or neighbors.

For these purposes, you need a multifunctional device that is suitable for both amateurs and professionals.

Today I want to present you with an overview of one measuring instrument that I was lucky enough to work with is digital multimeter pencil type MS8211 from KBT. Despite its compact size, this tester has a fairly large functionality and is very easy to use.

The size and shape of the MS8211 test pen case makes it unique among its rotary switch counterparts.

How unique and functional it is, we have to find out, so today we will review and analyze how to use the MS8211 multimeter when measuring such quantities as voltage, current, resistance, etc.

How to use a digital multimeter

As I said today, we will consider a digital multimeter, which is more suitable for electricians than for electronics engineers. Why exactly for electricians? In terms of measuring electrical quantities, it has all the functions that are present in conventional multimeters (measuring current, voltage, resistance, continuity). But the main difference lies in the external performance.

By design, it resembles a two-pole voltage indicator, which is convenient for electricians to work with. After all, what measurements are most often performed by electricians? Probably in 90% of cases this is a check. absence / presence of voltage before performing any work, the remaining 10% is continuity or resistance measurement.

Convenience lies in the ability to work with two hands. I took two poles (probes) in my hands and take measurements, for example, checking the absence / presence of voltage in the outlet. And at hand you can immediately see the readings on the display.

AC voltage measurement

Where can you find alternating voltage in an apartment? Correctly the nearest socket. How to check the voltage at the outlet digital multimeter?
To measure alternating voltage, in addition to setting the switch to the appropriate position, it is necessary to switch the device to the "AC" mode. To do this, press the "FUNC" button. Leave the measurement mode automatic.

We are looking for an outlet and insert two probes into its sockets. That's what I was talking about friends at the very beginning. This kind of tools is very convenient for electricians to work with.

You can see on the display that measured AC voltage at the outlet is 226 volts.

By the way, there is no polarity compared to constant voltage. That is, there is no difference in which socket of the outlet to insert the red and black probe.

Now let's measure the AC voltage in the electrical panel between the two phases. Let me remind you that in this case it should be about 400 volts.

As you can see, the line voltage in the floor board is 383 Volts.

How to check resistance with a multimeter

Now friends, let's figure out how to use the MS8211 digital multimeter when measuring resistance and continuity.

Set the switch to the "Ω" mark. Using the "FUNC" button, set the "AUTO" mode (it will be set automatically).

Before checking the resistance with a multimeter, you need to make sure the continuity of the circuit (wires, probes), for this we close the probes together. The display should show zero readings.

Measure the resistance with a nominal value of 5 kOhm. We connect the probes to the terminals of the resistor. The measured resistance is 5.05 kΩ.

Similarly, we measure resistors with a nominal value of 10 ohms and 50 kΩ. The data can be seen in the photo.

Let's check the integrity of the cable cores by ringing them with a digital multimeter. To do this, use the "FUNC" button to switch from the "AUTO" mode to the sound signal mode (the corresponding icon will appear on the display).

Let me remind you that in the "buzzer" mode sound signal will sound there is a resistance of the tested circuit no more than 50 ohms. For comparison, the resistance of 1 meter of a cable with a cross section of 1.5 mm2 is about 0.12 Ohm. For a cross section of 2.5 mm2, the value is about 0.0074 Ohm / m. That is, to exceed the specified limit, a cable with a cross section of 1.5 mm2 must be more than 4 km, and for a cross section of 2.5 mm2 - more than 6 km.

The cable was tested successfully, all the cores were intact.

To test the diodes, press the "FUNC" button, the display will show the corresponding symbol.

I have a diode brand 1n5408. The voltage drop across it is 0.49 V.

DC current measurement

Now let's look at how to use a digital multimeter when measuring DC current. To be honest, I am a little frustrated by the measurement limits, which are only 200mA for "AC" and "DC" modes.

Set the switch to mA mode. The display will show "AUTO" and "DC" indicating automatic mode DC measurement. Just what we need.

Let's measure the current in the circuit of my self-made dial. The light bulb is used here with a voltage of 6.3 V, an operating current of 0.22 A. We connect the continuity to the test leads of the device. And ... sadness. Blocking is triggered when the measured parameter is exceeded. The display shows "OL" and an intermittent beep sounds. Notice friends, the light continues to shine at the same time!

Let's try to measure the current consumption connected to the power supply led strip... We connect the tape to the power supply in series with the device. According to calculations, the current is about 2 A. We look at the device.

Measuring AC Current with a Digital Multimeter

To switch the device to the alternating current measurement mode ("AC"), press the "FUNC" button once.

I will use a 20W Led light bulb as the AC power source. We assemble the circuit in series with a light bulb and a multimeter.

According to calculations, the current strength should be about 88 mA. The readings can be seen on the display.

Let's now measure the current with a multimeter in a 7W LED lamp circuit.

Now we use a 40 W incandescent light bulb.

Now let's take a conventional incandescent lamp - 60 watts. The current in such a circuit will be about 260 mA. Let me remind you that the current measurement limit is 200 mA. Let's see if he can digital multimeter MS8211 measure the current at such a load.

Non-contact voltage test function

To activate this function, the switch must be moved to the "NCV" position. Now, if you bring the device to a wire that is energized, an intermittent sound signal is emitted and the light indication starts flashing.

What can be said about the sensitivity of this function. If you look for a wire in the wall, then there is practically no sensitivity (in any case, I could not find a single wire in the apartment). The signal goes off near the installed outlets, you start moving along the proposed route - it stops talking.

Near an openly laid cable under voltage, the indication starts to work at a distance of 5-10 mm from the cable. If you use this function to indirectly determine whether there is voltage or not, then the device will be enough for this.

Today we are reviewing a multimeter. This is a 5-in-1 multimeter and is notable for the fact that in addition to the basic standard functions of the multimeter, it has the ability to measure temperature and humidity, illumination, and also the sound field. The multimeter has automatic and manual selection of measurement limits, and allows you to measure AC and DC current and voltage, resistance, capacitance, frequency and duty cycle, diode test and sound continuity.

A multimeter came in a box with a lot of Chinese characters... The packaging itself is a little crumpled (Russian mail is not to blame, since it was delivered by CDEK), but everything inside is safe and sound. I have an assumption that the parcels are still crumpled by the Chinese post.

Multimeter complete set - probes, thermocouple, AAA batteries 3 pcs, instruction in English, control card.

Part of the body is wrapped in a dense rubber coating. The multimeter is quite weighty - about 400 g.

Below there are grooves for inserting probes, as well as a stand.

At the front end of the MS8229 there are sensors: temperature and humidity, lighting, sound.

The multimeter screen has a backlight, which is turned on by holding the HOLD / BL key for more than two seconds.

When switching between modes, the probe jacks are illuminated. In this case, the multimeter determines whether the probe is inserted into the socket or not, and if it is inserted into the wrong socket, the device emits a light and sound signal. Those. there is foolproof protection, I think beginners will appreciate this functionality.

The selection of submodes is carried out using the "Select" button.

By default, automatic selection of the measurement range works, but in some modes (resistance, capacitance, etc.) the response rate leaves much to be desired, therefore, using the "Range" button, you can switch to manual range selection. At the same time, the display speed is noticeably increased.

Testing

Let's start by measuring DC voltage. To do this, take an ION on an AD588BQ microcircuit, the temperature drift of which does not exceed 1.5 ppm / ° C, with an output voltage of 5V and 10V. More precisely, 5.00031V and 10.00027V (measured with an Agilent 34401A multimeter).

Next, we will measure the alternating voltage. HOPI readings are more accurate. The MS8229 multimeter overestimated the voltage by 4 volts. Just in case, I compared the readings with a table multimeter with True RMS(although this practically does not play any role here) and with a UNI-T multimeter - the mastech showed a voltage that is 4-5 volts too high compared to them.

Signal form - sine wave, signal frequency 55 kHz:

As you can see, everything is pretty accurate. Now we switch the multimeter to the mode of measuring the duty cycle (Duty), and on the generator set a rectangle with a frequency of 500 Hz and a duty cycle of 14%.

Tests have shown that the multimeter measures frequencies up to almost 100 kHz.

In the diode test mode, the forward voltage drop across the diode is measured, while the measured voltage for testing the diode was 1.6 volts.

Resistance measurement 500 Ohm, 8.571 kOhm, 200 kOhm, 2.5 MOhm. A high-precision (0.01%) resistance bank by Vishay and TDK is used.

The measurement range for capacitance in this model is quite narrow - it starts from several nanofarads and does not even reach 100 μF. On a 1000 pF capacitor, he showed 1.5 nF (he refused to measure smaller values), and on an electrolyte of 100 μF he also showed OL.

The photos below measure capacitors with nominal values: 10 nF, 0.1 μF, 1 μF and 10 μF.

There are no complaints about measuring the temperature with the multimeter - the temperature shows quite clearly, the comparison was made with a Chinese meter and a Fluke multimeter in the range up to 500 ºС (hot air gun).

I can't say anything about measuring the sound field level. there is nothing to compare with. During the day, with the computer turned on (the fans are noisy), it shows a level of ~ 40 dB.

But the light sensor is not very accurate. MS8229 constantly underestimates the value. The comparison was made with a Chinese light meter and homemade device based on digital sensor
