Moto G5S review: how handsome! Motorola Moto G - Specifications The strength of the Moto G5 Plus is its excellent battery life

The battery life of the Motorola Moto G6 Plus turned out to be decent, given the huge screen area that this mobile phone has. However, the image quality could be better. Summing up the results of the test, we can say that the value for money at the time of the test is good, but other smartphones for the same money can offer a little more.

Motorola Moto G6 Plus test: a chic giant

Motorola Moto G6 Plus, like the smaller Moto G6, is made in black and dressed in Gorilla Glas 3. With its large display in a modern 18:9 format, it should not be ashamed of appearance in front of top-end devices. Despite the large display area, the device still lies quite well in the hand.

However, for users with small hands, it may be difficult to wrap your fingers around the smartphone and control the device will not be as comfortable. The workmanship is good, but there is still a noticeable thin joint between the frame and the back side. The corners of the body are nicely rounded.

Without the transparent silicone case, which Motorola will kindly include with the purchase of the Moto G6 Plus, the dual camera will protrude unusually on the back of the case. In addition, it is a pity that the device is not waterproof.

Despite the large screen size, the Moto G6 Plus still feels good in the hand

Motorola Moto G6 Plus: bright 5.9-inch display

The Moto G6 Plus, unlike many trend-following models, has no notch at the top edge of the display. But the lower part of the frame turns out to be a little wider, since there is a thin fingerprint scanner here, which reacts quickly to touches. The side frames also turned out to be somewhat wider than other such models, such as the Huawei P20, but in the case of the G6 Plus, this bothers us just as little as with the G6. By the way: if you don't want to unlock the G6 Plus with your finger, you can also use the face recognition function - it also reacts reliably and quickly.

The 5.9-inch LC display offers a very large image area, displaying content in great detail at a resolution of 1080x2160 pixels. In addition, it offers powerful colors and contrast, and shines with a remarkable 590 cd/m2 brightness without ambient light. In sunlight, the content remains well readable.

The only pity is that Motorola continues to ditch the G6 line from the LED status indicator for displaying notifications. At the same time, the device displays information on the screen and in Stand-by mode. To do this, a gesture (even without touching the display) over the device is enough.

Quick navigation via fingerprint reader

Those who want to get even more space on the G6 Plus screen can, as in the case of the Moto G5 Plus, activate the “one-button navigation” mode via the Moto-App, and thus use the fingerprint scanner to control the smartphone instead of the on-screen navigation buttons finger.

Touching it in this case replaces pressing the Home button, a swipe from the side opens the application manager or forces the system to take one step back. The practical application of this function is learned quickly.

It is also possible to launch several more functions, such as a quick screenshot (tap with three fingers), rotation to activate the "do not disturb" mode, or swipe left or right at the bottom to reduce the working area of the screen. Thus, you can significantly facilitate the management of the smartphone with one hand. But annoying is the fact that you can’t return the picture on the screen to normal mode with the same simple swipe. This can only be done through the deactivation button in the Moto-App settings menu.

Moto G6 Plus: mediocre camera

The dual camera on the back of the Moto G6 Plus is unchanged from the G6 or even its predecessor, let alone improved. The main camera has a resolution of 12 megapixels and has a really fast f/1.7 aperture.

The pictures produced by the camera are ordinary, but not good. In some, but not all, images, the lower region is fuzzy. The camera has difficulty focusing quickly, sometimes taking more than a second before the shutter is released. Fine structures such as hair and yarn are also partly noisy and difficult to distinguish. When the ambient light level is low, the pictures become watercolor-like and look very “softened”. Sharpness is not enough, the textures are almost indistinguishable. At the same time, the texts look quite clear.

The optional 5-megapixel front-facing camera captures compelling portraits that can be applied with the "augmented reality" filters known to everyone on Snapchat, for example. With the Auto Portrait Enhancement feature, users can correct wrinkles and other "disturbances" in their portraits.

Moto G6 Plus test: powerful processor

The G6 Plus' 3200mAh battery is exactly the same size as the Moto G6. But battery life during test runs with the display activated was only about half an hour: 8 hours 58 minutes recorded by our watch - a decent figure considering the screen area.

More durable smartphones that can work in this mode for up to 13 hours can be found in ours. While the Moto G6 managed to achieve a very short charging time of 96 minutes, the G6 Plus took approximately 20 minutes longer to recharge the battery. However, this charging time can still be considered good.

As for the processor, the Moto G6 Plus allows itself to relax a bit. However, while the Snapdragon 630 does not offer the same performance as the most powerful 845 currently found in devices such as the OnePlus 6, in all day-to-day usage scenarios, the system runs smoothly and large apps and websites run. nice fast.

64 GB of built-in and 4 GB of RAM for this price segment is more than decent. Those who shoot a lot of photos and videos can also use a Micro-SD memory card. Particularly practical: the Moto G6 Plus can accommodate both two SIM cards and a memory card at the same time. Many other Dual-SIM smartphones have a so-called hybrid slot, which means that the user has to choose whether to use a second SIM card or a memory card.

The manufacturer installs the current Android 8.0 (Oreo) operating system here. Important security updates should arrive every two to three months. The security patch at the time of testing (mid-June) was dated April 1, 2018. The G6 Plus should receive an update even before Android 9, but whether it will receive support after that remains to be seen.

Alternative: Honor 10

Although it costs a little more (about 25,000 rubles), it offers a chic design and decent photo quality. Also, it has a faster processor.

The design and performance are great, and the AI-powered dual camera takes decent photos. Solid, though not phenomenal, is the battery life.

General characteristics

Type

Deciding on the type of device (phone or smartphone?) is quite simple. If you need a simple and inexpensive device for calls and SMS, it is recommended to stop the choice on the phone. A smartphone is more expensive, but it offers a wide variety of options: games, videos, the Internet, thousands of programs for all occasions. However, its battery life is significantly less than that of a regular phone.

Motorola Moto G (3rd Gen.) is the latest, and undoubtedly the most successful generation of the popular inexpensive smartphone from Motorola. A huge number of satisfied users and the vast majority of positive reviews are direct confirmation of this. In this review, we will consider the most "running" modification of the model - Moto G XT1550.

The appearance and body of the smartphone Motorola Moto G 3gen

The package bundle of the smartphone is as Spartan as possible: the box contains the device itself, a charger with a built-in microUSB cable and paper documentation. The design of the Moto G 3 is fully consistent with the brand's signature features, while at the same time it looks fresh and attractive. There are only two color options for the case - white and black, but for the back cover it is already provided 10 different colors.
The front panel of the smartphone is covered with tempered protective glass Gorilla Glass 3. Below and above the display are grilles of multimedia and conversational speakers. Also, above the display there is a front camera eye and a light sensor. The side frames of the Moto G XT1550 are made of plastic, but due to the fact that they are gray, they are painfully reminiscent of metal. All physical buttons of the gadget are displayed on the right side of the case. The on/off button of the smartphone display has a ribbed surface, and the volume rocker is smooth, so you won’t be able to confuse the control buttons by touch.
The back panel of the case has a semicircular shape, due to which the smartphone fits in the palm of your hand like a glove. On it is an unchanged branded plate with the main camera, dual LED flash and the Motorola brand logo. On the top of the case there is a 3.5 mm audio jack and an additional microphone, on the bottom of the case there is a microUSB input. The removable back cover of the device is made of polycarbonate with a silvery white surface. Under it are two slots for SIM cards in MicroSim format and a slot for microSD memory cards up to 32 GB. The lid sits very tightly, making the Moto G 3 gen 2016 look quite monolithic.
The dimensions of the smartphone are quite standard for its class. The length of the apparatus is 142.1 mm, the width is 72.4, and the maximum thickness is 11.6 mm. At the same time, Motorola Moto Ji of the 3rd generation weighs 155 grams. The phone is protected from dust and moisture. IPX7- this means that it will withstand 30 minutes of immersion in water up to one meter deep. Nevertheless, we do not recommend specifically testing the phone in this way - let it remain a pleasant bonus in case of rain or an accidental fall into the water.

Display, specifications and performance of the Motorola Moto G 3rd smartphone

The display of the Motorola Moto G 3 gen smartphone is made using IPS technology and has a diagonal of five inches. Display resolution is relatively small 1280 by 720 dots(HD), but due to the high pixel density (294 ppi), graininess is not observed. The matrix has wide viewing angles and a good margin of brightness - even in the sun the screen remains readable. The capacitive display sensor supports up to ten simultaneous touches, making it possible to play games that require multi-finger MultiTouch.
Quad-core Qualcomm MSM8916 processor is responsible for the performance of the smartphone Snapdragon 410 with a clock frequency of 1.4 GHz and a Qualcomm Adreno 306 graphics chip. The Moto G XT1550 has 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of built-in memory, which can be expanded using a microSD memory card up to 32 GB. Such a “set” is quite enough for the phone to work comfortably with most applications and smooth operation even of fairly demanding games.
True, only on medium graphics settings. In a performance test in Antutu Benchmark v6.1.4 smartphone scored 32310 points - not the highest among competitors in its price category.

Motorola Moto G gen 3 smartphone cameras

The 3rd generation Motorola Moto G Dual received fairly high-quality cameras that some smartphones from a higher price segment can envy.
The main camera of Moto G 3 has a 13-megapixel module with f/2.0 aperture, autofocus and dual LED flash. In good light, the camera "gives out" pictures of excellent quality, with fairly natural colors. In the evening, the quality of the photo, of course, "sags", but still remains at a very good level. The number of settings for the main camera is quite modest, but no one forbids using alternative photo and video shooting applications with a wider range of settings. In addition, the main camera of the Motorola Moto G 3gen behaves great in automatic mode - so you are unlikely to need third-party "cameras".
The front camera of the smartphone is 5 megapixel with a fixed focus. The module has an f / 2.0 aperture, and the display can be used as a flash in low light. The quality of pictures and video of the front camera is quite good for both selfies and video conferences. Both Moto G 3rd cameras can shoot Full HD video resolution 1080p. Recorded videos are of excellent quality, the frames do not “sag”, and the picture has practically no defects. The main camera of the smartphone can also shoot in Slow Motion mode.

"Pure" Android and a few nice "chips" Moto G 3gen

The Moto G XT1550 smartphone runs on a "clean" version of the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow operating system - without an additional shell from the manufacturer. Thanks to this, the RAM of the device is maximally unloaded - another plus for the speed of the gadget. Any missing software can always be downloaded from Google Play Store.
The device has several interesting features. For example, there is a function to activate the flashlight with a double "shake", with deactivation by the same method. It is also possible to display notifications on the switched off screen of the smartphone, after the user picks it up.
Motorola Moto G 3 battery has a capacity 2470 mAh. It should be enough for 24 hours of average active use of the device.
True, it will take a long time to charge it - about 4 hours. The reason for this is a weak complete charger for 550 mA.

Long gone is the era of Motorola as an independent company that delighted its fans with unusual products. Recall at least the legendary Razr V3 clamshell, one of the first Atrix 4G smartphones docked with a keyboard-display dock, and the Kevlar Razr Maxx. Today, this sub-brand of the Chinese Lenovo also sometimes produces entertaining devices: for example, Z, Z Play, Z2 and Z2 Play with support for moto-mods, but still the company's focus has shifted significantly to the budget area: smartphones have become very popular in developing countries and third world countries inexpensive series E, M, G, C.

Today we have in our review a representative of the mid-budget segment - Moto G5S. By tradition, we will briefly go through the characteristics of the smartphone, and then proceed to its detailed analysis.

The first difference from its predecessor G5 that catches the eye is a slightly larger screen size (from 5 to 5.2 inches). The G5 also has slightly lower battery capacity, no NFC support, and a slightly different main camera. In addition, the G5S received splash protection, which is also a nice bonus. The only configuration of the G5S is 32 GB of internal memory and 3 GB of RAM, while the G5, in addition to this, also offered a complete set with 16 ROM and 2 GB of RAM. This is where all the differences, in fact, end.

Well, let's go directly to the review of the smartphone.

Box and accessories

G5S comes in a colorful box, which is not a shame to give without wrapping paper. The delivery set includes a traditional set for a budget smartphone: the device itself, a charger, a cable, an extractor clip and instructions. The charger supports fast charging and is capable of operating at a voltage / current of 5V / 3A, 9V / 1.6A, 12V / 1.2A, which is good news.

Design

In appearance, the G5 and G5S are very different: the newcomer is equipped with an all-metal body, unlike its predecessor, and looks very good. The metal added weight to the device - the smartphone became heavier by 12 g. There are antenna inserts on the top and bottom of the back cover.

At the back, in the center, in a slightly protruding base, there is a camera with a flash, a little lower - the Motorola logo. On the right are the volume and power buttons, on the left is the SIM card slot. At the bottom, there is a microUSB input and a speaker grille, and at the top, there is an audio jack.

The smartphone itself is very pleasant in the hand and does not slip due to the rounded shape. The edges of the smartphone are very well processed, they do not dig into the palm. The assembly of the smartphone is excellent, nothing backlash and does not creak.

Display

As already mentioned, the G5S slightly increased the display diagonal to 5.2 inches, leaving the FHD resolution unchanged. However, this is more than enough for a smartphone with such a diagonal. The IPS-display does its job well: the colors are bright and juicy, it is clearly visible in the moderate sun.

OS and user interface

The operating system is almost bare Android 7.1.1 with applications from Google, the Moto application and a couple of applications from Yandex. There are no separate touch buttons at the bottom of the screen, control is carried out using on-screen soft buttons. Branded gestures are available to quickly launch the camera. The speed of the smartphone is generally satisfactory: when walking through the menu of the operating system, there are no lags. They arise only in those cases when, in parallel with work in some application, for example, an application from the Play Market is installed. Which, however, is typical for any budget smartphone running on inexpensive eMMC memory.

Especially worth mentioning is the Moto app, with which you can customize gestures and the operation of the active display. So, for example, you can enable gestures to turn on the camera with two circular motions or turn on the flashlight with two swipes.

The touch button of the fingerprint scanner can replace the navigation buttons: when you swipe to the right, the application menu is called up, when you swipe to the left, the back button is activated, with a short press, the smartphone is blocked, with a long press, Google Now is called (which, in addition, can be controlled by voice when the smartphone is locked).

By default, the G5S has active display enabled. If you need to know the time or read missed notifications, just lift your smartphone.

In general, it is clear that Lenovo / Motorola has done a lot of work on the user interface. You quickly get used to the chips of a smartphone, after which there is a slight surprise why other manufacturers did not do this.

Processor and Memory

If you think that the S suffix in the model name is derived from the English word Speed (speed), then you are mistaken. The processor in the G5S remains the same as its predecessor (Snapdragon 430), which is a bit of a shame, especially considering the fact that the older brother G5S Plus has a more acceptable and more powerful Snapdragon 625, which is faster than any processor from the 4xx line almost one and a half times. The test results confirm this. However, noticeable delays will occur only in very heavy games that are not optimized for weak smartphones.

The predecessor G5 had two configurations available: with 2 / 16 GB and 3 / 32 GB of RAM and permanent memory, respectively. In the G5S, it was decided to leave only the older configuration, and this is probably right: 3 GB of RAM is now the minimum required to work with a smartphone. Permanent memory can be expanded by equipping a smartphone with a microSD card, but, unfortunately, then you will lose the opportunity to put a second SIM card - a hybrid slot.

Interfaces

The smartphone is equipped with the necessary minimum: a microUSB connector, a dual-band WiFi module, Bluetooth version 4.2, a 3.5 mm audio jack. It was a little disappointing that the G series remained on the outdated microUSB connector, and did not switch to the more modern USB Type-C. There is FM radio support. It was also nice to see the presence of the NFC module, which means the availability of wireless payments.

Battery

The battery capacity has slightly increased to 3000 mAh. This is a normal indicator for a smartphone of this diagonal. Thanks to its energy-efficient processor and well-optimized Android 7, it can easily handle one day of work for the average user.

The smartphone supports TurboCharge fast charging. A 15-watt charger is supplied with the device. In 30 minutes, the device charges from scratch by about 40%, in an hour - by 70%. A full charge cycle will take about an hour and a half.

Communication and sound

There are no complaints about the quality of communication with the G5S: both the interlocutor and we hear him perfectly during a conversation. The smartphone works in the three most common LTE bands in Russia: B7, B20, B38, which is not very common in smartphones in this price category.

The sound of the external speaker is clear, plays at maximum power without wheezing. There are no complaints about the sound in the headphones either.

Camera

Both the main and front cameras in a mid-range smartphone: there are not enough stars from the sky, but they are not bad for their level. The detail of the pictures from the main camera is moderate, the color reproduction is satisfactory. The HDR algorithm does not work very well, you can see it in the picture. The front camera shoots, like all middling ones, quite acceptable, but it is far from the flagships.

The camera app is fast: pictures are taken in the blink of an eye, which is not very typical for not the fastest processor. The following shooting modes are available: Photo, Video, Slow motion, Professional mode, Panorama. Slow-motion shooting is carried out at a resolution of 960x540 at 120 frames per second. In Photo mode, you can turn on / off / set automatic HDR mode, turn on / off / set automatic flash mode and set a timer. In professional mode, you can manually set the shutter speed, white balance, ISO, focus and exposure compensation.

Results

Lenovo is trying to keep up with the times. G5S is an improved model of its predecessor G5, which has slightly increased the diagonal, added a few milliamp-hours and, most importantly (we think), built-in NFC-module. For quite reasonable money, you get a device that is pleasant to use and does not contain unnecessary bloatware. G5S will be a nice gift for a person who appreciates usability and design, but does not demand maximum performance from his smartphone and is not used to overpaying.
