Story
Why is he so attractive? Earlier, in the 19th century, like most of the now famous places on the Cote d'Azur, it was an unremarkable fishing village, which was distinguished only by lush Mediterranean pine trees. It was to this "village" part that the inhabitants of neighboring Antibes (larger and more developed) went for picnics to relax under the shade of pine trees. It is believed that on March 12, 1882, Juan-les-Pins (les pins - in French pines) got its modern name. In 1883, it was decided to build a railway station in the village, which would make it possible to get here from Paris by train (on the line Paris-Lyon-Mediterranean coast of France).
However, Juan-les-Pins' real heyday began in the 20th century after the First World War with the arrival of the “American wave” of bohemians on the Cote d'Azur: writers, actors and the rich around them, who created what is now called a “fashionable get-together” on the Riviera. Antibes and its surroundings became known to the general public thanks to the popular novel "Tender is the Night" by Francis Scott Fitzgerald, who spent several summer seasons in a villa in these places. Juan-les-Pins was visited by Charlie Chaplin and Marlene Dietrich, Fitzgerald's colleagues Ernest Hemingway and John Dos Passos, not to mention a host of French artists, many of whom gradually moved from Paris to the Riviera. Shrewd investors, among whom was Edouard Baudouin, who invested in the development of the infrastructure of such a famous resort city as Deauville, built a casino in Juan-les-Pins in a short time. It has become another pearl in the crown of the Cote d'Azur, which is gradually turning into the world's most fashionable resort.
And today Juan-les-Pins is famous for its entertainment venues. There is a casino, several nightclubs, trendy bars and restaurants, and they are concentrated in a fairly compact area, limited by a couple of streets next to the embankment. It is here that you get the feeling of an incredible “holiday of life”, which is typical for most seaside resort towns. An acquaintance of mine compares Juan-les-Pins in the atmosphere and abundance of souvenir shops, cafes, bars and restaurants with Thailand. True, all this splendor is limited to the central part of the resort next to the embankment, in other areas it is the usual town of the Riviera, where calm French pensioners play petanque under the pines during the day.
If you decide to go for a walk to Juan-les-Pins by car in the evening from neighboring cities, then you should bear in mind that there will most likely be problems with parking in the waterfront area. In summer, sometimes you have to circle the streets for a long time at a distance of hundreds of meters from the Juan-les-Pins party center in search of a vacant place.
Events
The cultural life in Juan-les-Pins and Antibes is quite rich: a variety of exhibitions, antique fairs, rallies and regattas, bridge festivals are held here, in addition to many concerts and music festivals. The main musical event of the summer in Juan-les-Pins is, of course, its famous Jazz Festival, which usually starts in mid-July and lasts 10 days. In 2020, the 60th festival, jubilee in the history of the resort city, will be held from 9 to 22 July.
Beaches
The beach at Juan-les-Pins is covered with fine soft sand of a beautiful light beige. The length of the beach is about 2 kilometers. Basically, the coastline here is not wide and is densely occupied by private beaches with paid sun loungers and umbrellas. There are also free zones, but they are very small compared to, for example, Cannes or even more Nice. Therefore, in the "high" season, I advise you to come to the sea early in the morning or in the evening if you want to take a seat "on the first line" right next to the water on the free beach.
