It is necessary to clearly distinguish between faults of the receiving and transmitting paths, and also take into account what is common to them antenna switch, which is made on a fragile ceramic substrate and often cracks when dropped and hit.

As a result, the phone does not see the network, or it sees it, but cannot register. In many phones, the antenna switch and the power amplifier (and sometimes the transceiver too) are combined into one microcircuit.

Typical faults of the GSM module:

1. The phone does not "see" the network- a permanent message on the phone display of the type: "no network" or the like and, accordingly, the absence of stripes (lines) of the indicator of the electromagnetic field strength of the GSM network. First, you should check if the phone finds the network in manual search mode. If the networks are found, it can be assumed that the receiving path of the GSM module is in order and the phone cannot register in the network, since it is not possible to send a request for registration. The fault should be looked for in the transmitter, power amplifier (Power Amplifier), as well as in the antenna switch.

If the phone does not find any network, the test should be started sequentially as the signal passes, that is, from the antenna to the transceiver.

An external examination of the antenna and the contact terminals of the antenna circuits of the telephone board is carried out for the absence of oxides, deformation or absence of springy contacts for connecting the antenna, as well as broken antennas made in the form of a thin loop glued to one or another body part of the phone.

Almost every phone is equipped with a diagnostic connector, which is designed to connect a GSM tester or an external GSM antenna (for areas of poor signal reception).

Since this connector is in series between the antenna and the input circuits (switch and so on), if the contact of the internal contact group of the connector is broken as a result of exposure to moisture, oxides, fur. exposure, the antenna is disconnected from the phone. It is checked by a continuity tester and, if necessary, is replaced with a known good one. Replacing the connector with a jumper is also allowed. In this case, the function of connecting a GSM tester or external antenna will be unavailable. It should be noted that the connector contact may not be completely absent, but have resistance from hundreds of milliohms to several ohms. However, for such ultra-high frequencies of the GSM range, there will be huge losses (attenuation) of the signal at such a resistance and, accordingly, the phone will not see the network or the level will be very low and constantly "float".

The next element that fails as a result of drops and shocks is the 850 / 900MHz and 1800 / 1900MHz filters - each for its own frequency range.

Without a GSM tester and / or an oscilloscope, it is possible to identify a faulty one only by replacing it with a known good one.

In case of falls and shocks, the soldering of the chips of the GSM module is often disrupted, and in some cases the Power Amplifier breaks down and gives a short circuit in the power supply. Soldering or replacement of the corresponding microcircuits is in progress.

2. The phone registers on the network, but the call cannot be made... This defect can occur for several reasons:

Incorrect configuration of the phone software (software) - the "Hide number" option is selected if the operator does not support this function by default. Dialing stops almost immediately after pressing the "Call" button. It is necessary to select the option "Set by the network", "Show number" or others, according to the menu items of a particular phone.

Poor shielding of the GSM module. Applies to phones in which the shielding is made in the form of a metallized sputtering of the back cover of the case. Over time, the transition contacts (for connecting the shielding to the common wire of the board) oxidize, the deposition crumbles, and when a call is made, part of the power emitted by the power amplifier and antenna is directed to the elements and circuits of the telephone board. Typical for phones Samsung X100, X480 and the like.

Phone software failure. Violation of the settings of a special memory area containing all kinds of calibrations, security data, etc. They are named differently for each phone. For example, for NOKIA - PM (Permanent Memory), for Sony Ericsson - GDFS (Global Data File System), for Samsung - EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory), etc. By default, through the appropriate menu item, usually called "Reset settings" or "Restore factory settings" or do it using a special service code (not supported by all phones). The most effective way is to restore the software using the appropriate programmer.

I hate to fish, because I feel sorry for the wasted time. But, nevertheless, I have been preparing for fishing all week. The task was to catch the mobile Internet and additional risks of the received signal level on the screen of a cell phone or smartphone, and it is necessary to catch it in the field without active amplifiers and batteries. This can be done using a passive repeater.

This, probably, already happened that in order to look at something on the Internet or call on a cell phone, you almost had to climb onto the roof or half hang out of the window, catching the risk on the cell phone screen or stuffing S MS -ku throw phone up, or raise together with the flag on the flagpole.


Try to make the simplest passive 3G signal repeater or cell phone first. Two simple directional wire antennas, a coaxial cable connecting them, that's the whole structure. With such a simple mobile device that does not require power, you can communicate in a basement, in a metal hangar or garage, in a de-energized bomb shelter, or anywhere else where the cellular signal does not reach.

The size of the antennas themselves will correspond to the selected communication frequency: for a cell phone, frequencies of 900 MHz and 1.8 GHz, for a mobile Internet, about 2 GHz. For the experiment, I made a 900 MHz antenna, but in practice it also turned out to be workable from 1.8 to 2 GHz. Subsequent measurements of the homemade antenna showed that the range of its excellent matching practically reached 2.080 GHz, otherwise I would not have received the 3G Internet signal.

If someone has already assembled a "simple antenna for receiving terrestrial digital television" from two wire rings, he will easily cope with the task. Everything is done in the same way.


The diameter of the mandrel (shot glass) is 4.3 cm. The frequency is 1.9 - 2.2 GHz.

Determine the wavelength in meters L m = 300/900 MHz = 0.33 m

Diameter of the coil (ring) of the wire D = L / 3.14 = 0.33 / 3.14 = 0.106 (m)

Distance between rings S = L / 4 = 0.33 / 4 = 0.08 (m)

Accordingly, with increasing frequency, the frames will decrease in size, the losses in the coaxial cable will increase. Antennas at other frequencies will also be calculated.

How it works. One directional antenna, taken out from an absorbing reinforced concrete wall or raised above the metal roof of a country house, or simply raised above the ground, is oriented towards the base station. The second antenna, whether it is a basement or a country house, should be directed at or near a mobile phone or smartphone.

Since the antenna is directional, it has a gain, in a particular case equal to 5 dB. Some of this gain will be lost in the cable. In the cable RK 75 - 3. 7-35, 6 meters long at a frequency of 900 MHz, I lost, as it turned out later, 3 dB, which, taking into account the error, coincides with the technical characteristics of the used feeder. Antenna efficiency in free space with increasing height is better. It induces more field strength and improves line-of-sight with the base station, ensuring a stable connection, since houses and trees are no longer an obstacle to radio waves.

If you need to use multiple frequencies, you will need several repeaters with different ring diameters. Here, as in fishing, you need any kind of bait, so I prepared the tackle like an avid fisherman, bending the wires like hooks to different diameters. Everything will depend on the conditions. Let's see what we can catch.


Test site.

It remains only to try. Here is the place of fishing, an old gazebo. A rod made of a miraculously preserved shortened antenna mast, which saved me when I flew from the roof, and therefore I definitely won't climb a tree, at my age the bones do not heal well. The pole was extended with plastic tubes, in which low-current wires are usually laid. Even a wooden glazing bead was used, because the antenna itself weighs little. Turning the fishing rod, I orient the rings towards the nearest town, temporarily turning into a fox hunter. Next to the antenna rings, which is below, I put my mobile phone.

With the help of a repeater, the mobile phone added three risks to the display, providing 100 percent communication with the nearest civilization (base station), located 6 kilometers beyond the forest. For those who like to chat on a cell phone for a long time outside the city, such a device is a must. As a rule, away from base stations, the phone gives off full power, which is unhealthy. The correct phone (meaning a small SAR value - sanitary standard), having a good connection with the base station, will give less power to the antenna, which means that the body will be less exposed to the microwave field. By the evening, there are more and more people who want to check their mobile phones and smartphones. The tablet came to life, slowly loading, showing individual pictures of television programs. By the way, about polarization. In a hurry, or maybe out of absent-mindedness, I completely forgot about her, and when I was looking at the photographs, I remembered. Base mobile stations of cellular communication have antennas with vertical polarization, and therefore the tackle on the fishing rod had to be rotated 90 degrees, so that the cut of the rings was not at the bottom, but on the side, which corresponded to a similar polarization. Nevertheless, we managed to catch the radio signal even with the horizontal polarization of the rings on the mast, despite the minimum loss of 6 dB due to mismatches, the experiment was a success. On the other hand, the forest has its own laws and the signal transmission with horizontal polarization is better in it.

Two years have passed. This summer, in 2016, I was preparing for the arrival of my grandchildren on vacation from their parents or vice versa, and decided to conduct digital television in the gazebo, watch cartoons, and to catch my breath myself. So that the antenna would not be conspicuous, I wove it out of wires and called it an invisible antenna. It turned out four rings, which, when receiving digital television, proved to be better than two ring structures. I wove similar two antennas for a passive repeater of mobile communications for the 900 MHz range, so, just in case, suddenly someone needs the Internet. As of today, there is no Internet in our lowlands yet. The "H" icon appears, but it takes years to load. Having laid the double eight flat, he raised it to the level of the roof of the arbor, and it became invisible in the crown of a wild apple tree. Thanks to this design, the mobile phone added two to the two level risks. On this, it seemed, the experiment ended, but there was still a moment of triumph when the young parents urgently needed the Internet. The repeater did not disappoint, caught the Megafon operator, and quickly downloaded the necessary information. At that time, I felt like a wizard who opens a new spring with the help of a wire frame.

Dense urban development, terrain, power lines and remoteness from transmission towers greatly affect the quality of signal reception, which can be lost at the most inopportune moment.

And today I want to talk about several ways to enhance cellular communication on the phone with my own hands and how really they help. But before you take any action with your device, you need to make sure that it is working properly.

After all, poor reception can be the result of a malfunction of the radio module, unreliable contact with the internal antenna, or a flashed firmware.

It is very easy to make sure that your smartphone is working properly. It is enough to compare his level of acceptance with another, obviously working, not necessarily of the same model.

If it is very different, then, most likely, the mobile phone is faulty and it has a direct road to the repair shop. But there is no need to rush. I had a similar situation with Lenovo 316i, when the level bars on the display constantly disappeared, while other mobile phones worked fine. For some reason, I sinned on a buggy software.

And, of course, I tried to reflash it, but the result did not change. Having studied a considerable number of forums, I was inclined to the conclusion that the cause of poor reception may be poor contact at the junction of the antenna and the motherboard.

This is a common disease in Chinese gadgets. The next step I decided to take was to disassemble it.

And in fact, upon opening the case, I found that the middle spring tab on the board is slightly bent down and does not come into contact with the antenna, which is a flexible cable glued to the cover.

Armed with tweezers, I bent it up a little, screwed everything back, put the SIM card and the battery in place, and pressed the power button. After booting the system, all four divisions appeared in the status bar, and this time they did not disappear.

Thus, having the skills and certain knowledge, I myself managed to repair my mobile. But now let's talk about the methods by which you can significantly improve the quality of communication.

A software method for amplifying a cellular signal

This time we will not disassemble anything, but install a special MTK Engineering Mode application on Android, with which we will enter the engineering menu and change some parameters there. It is free and you can download it from the Play Market. Note that it is only suitable for devices powered by the MediaTek processor. You can find out which processor you have using the CPU-Z program, which can be downloaded, again, from the Play Market. So, we click on the shortcut of the program and immediately get into such a menu.

Go to the MTK Settings tab

As a result, on the display we will see such a window with the settings, where we remove all the checkmarks. We leave only

  • EGSM900;
  • DCS1800;
  • WCDMA-GSM-900.

Thus, we turn off unnecessary frequencies that are not used in our country.

We do the same operation with SIM2.

Then we go to the "Network selection" where we select the item GSM only. This is a 2G communication standard that originally appeared in the construction of telecommunication networks.

It has wide coverage across the country and is excellent at handling voice calls. Select this tab if you are not using 3G internet.

After these manipulations, your handset will work longer in time by turning off the scanning of unnecessary frequencies and keep the radio signal more stable, since it will not jump between the WCDMA and GSM standards.

Connecting a homemade antenna

Previously, cell phones had an external radio antenna or a plug under a flap located on the back of the case, into which any piece of wire could be inserted, which significantly increased reception.

Now everyone has modern smartphones, to which, apart from charging and headphones, nothing else can be connected. But, if you disassemble it, then inside, on the board, you can see a small golden cylindrical connector with a hole in the middle.

It is intended for network diagnostics and is used only in service centers. But, if you insert a small piece (no more than 5 cm) of a thin insulated wire into it, you can observe a noticeable increase in the signal level.

Only in this case it is necessary to comply with some conditions. The wiring should not bend anywhere and touch live parts. It can be neatly laid inside the case, between the battery and the cover.

Again, this method is not suitable for everyone, since most devices are non-separable or do not have such a connector.

Installing the repeater

This option is ideal for use in a country house or in a village, where, as a rule, the quality of communication is poor due to the remoteness of the towers.

Its principle of operation consists in capturing electromagnetic waves, preamplifying them and transmitting them to the user's phone. The system consists of a repeater unit, external and internal antennas. The disadvantage of this equipment is the expensive price of the device, the complexity of installation, settings and a small range. But you can try to build a homemade installation yourself to amplify the signal.

To do this, we need a metal rod, about 50 cm long, a coaxial cable, a piece of foil about 100 by 40 mm in size, glued to plastic or plywood. It will be better if you have a foil-clad textolite.

So, we bend our rod in the shape of a diamond and solder a cable to it, the other end of which we solder to the foil.

We install our diamond on the roof of the house or on a post, preferably higher.

Now we check the amplifier. To do this, put the phone close to the plywood and notice how much the signal quality has improved.

Sticker sticker

Often on sale you can find a universal compact antenna amplifier, which is a thin self-adhesive plate with a special geometric pattern made of metal tracks, which, according to the manufacturer, reduce the amount of interference and can significantly enhance the signal where there is practically no cellular communication.

A sticker is glued to the inner surface of the phone, under the battery. But in my opinion, there is no point in buying it. You can just as well put a piece of foil under the battery and the effect will be the same.

Here, with the help of such simple manipulations, you can do it yourself, using inexpensive materials, to strengthen a weak cellular signal on your phone.

A smartphone is a full-fledged miniature radio station that receives and transmits a signal in a certain frequency range (determined by the provider providing communication services).

The parameters of signal transmission between the base station (repeater) and the mobile amplifier are usually called "Down Link", from the smartphone to an external antenna - "Up Link". Note that, as a rule, providers almost always provide for some limitation when transmitting a signal from a basic repeater (up to 35 km). This allows you to create a configuration that implies the implementation of 8 channels for user conversations. These parameters are provided by the relevant communication standards. GSM operators provide fewer channels for conversation (no more than 3), however, in this case, the transmission duration increases and reaches 100 km. Often this cellular network configuration for an outdoor antenna is used in the coastal area of ​​the coverage area.

Features of choice

For phones with 3G technology, not every connected mobile antenna is suitable. There are many factors that affect the quality of the signal received from a base station:

  • relief features;
  • geographic localization;
  • climatic conditions;
  • technical characteristics of both the antenna itself and the mobile device.

The most preferred place to place the 3g antenna for the signal booster is the elevation. This can be the roof of a building or a car, in the case of using external equipment for the vehicle.

It should be borne in mind that it is recommended to direct the amplifier for three or 4g towards the nearest repeater tower, which will help to ensure better signal reception and transmission. The antenna placement is shown schematically in the figure.

Note! By installing an antenna for a cell phone for amplification, you can improve the quality of communication not only on mobile phones, but also on other devices: laptop, tablet, PC and TV. Then the general scheme will be more complicated. When improving the signal for all gadgets at home, the power of the antenna, modem and adapter used in the circuit is of great importance.

There are a remote model and equipment with a stationary device. There are options that connect to the phone and transmit a signal like Wi-Fi. For amplification, you can use active repeaters and work with passive devices. The former additionally transform the signal, while the latter receive only due to their configuration.

In addition, there are several main types of devices:

  • wave receiver;
  • flat antenna;
  • parabolic antenna;
  • pin-type antenna amplifier.

The design of a wave signal receiver includes the following elements: a traverse and reflectors located perpendicular to it. This type of external amplifiers does an excellent job of amplifying the signal, but requires precise tuning (pointing) of the device to the base station.

Flat outdoor antenna - this type of remote device has a fairly wide range of directivity. The device consists of an irradiator, which is built into the reflector structure. To tune the antenna, an approximate direction to the repeater is selected.

Parabolic external antenna - a device for outdoor placement, consisting of a feed and a reflector. The use of such an amplifier significantly enhances signal reception, but installing an antenna for a telephone requires certain knowledge and skills. If installed and configured incorrectly, the effectiveness of the use of this device will be minimal.

A whip-type antenna amplifier is a rod that simultaneously plays the role of a reflector and an irradiator. The design of this antenna assumes a circular directivity. A prerequisite for using such an amplifier is the absence of screening devices that interfere with the reception of signal transmission.

But how to connect the external and internal parts of the devices?

Connecting the mobile to an external antenna

To work in a smartphone, a cellular antenna requires a coaxial cable with a high-frequency connector. This is due to the fact that most mobile phones operate precisely in the range of such frequencies. Note that the efficiency of signal amplification directly depends on the quality characteristics of both the connector itself and the used cable products.

If the design of the phone is not equipped with a jack to connect the antenna, you can use a speakerphone to solve the problem. In addition, you can use a method that is uncomfortable for the user by wrapping the mobile with several turns of the antenna wire. Although in this case, the use of the device is rather inconvenient, nevertheless, it allows you to achieve good signal reception in the phone.

Important! When using any kind of device, it is necessary that the antenna itself be positioned towards the repeater.

Diamond antenna, self assembly

Often, users do not have the funds or the opportunity to buy an antenna amplifier for a smartphone (a place of residence in areas remote from large population centers). In this case, a person interested in improving the reception and transmission of the signal of his mobile phone can make a design for the phone with his own hands. In addition, even simple homemade products can connect well to the network and give the desired signal.

To create a device for improving the signal with your own hands, you will need a certain set of tools and materials:

  • pliers and a sharp knife designed for careful stripping of insulation from cable products;
  • directly the cable itself (RG6) for connecting a mobile gadget to the antenna and a copper wire (2 mm cross-section), its length must be at least 8 cm;
  • soldering tool with solder;
  • adapter for a mobile device.

The procedure for assembling an antenna for a mobile phone:

  • first of all, the insulation of cable products is stripped, while this work should be done carefully so as not to damage the inner core, which will subsequently be connected with one end to the mobile device, and the other to the antenna;
  • the copper wire is bent at the ends in such a way that it turns out to be a rhombus at both ends;
  • at the next stage, a copper wire is soldered to the cable core (strictly in the "up" position), the other part of the copper wire is soldered to the shielding braid of the cable (strictly in the "down" position);
  • further, the copper wire is fastened to any surface of a suitable size (a wide wooden bar is better), while one should not forget about the reliable insulation of all connections made during the assembly process;
  • the resulting structure is placed on the roof of the building and is securely fastened, the provided free end of the cable goes down and is connected to the phone using a special adapter.

Important! It should be borne in mind that adherence to the placement of the copper wire will significantly improve the received-transmitted signal, even if it is almost completely absent.

The self-assembled design of a diamond-shaped cellular antenna is a very simple circuit to implement, which can be assembled by almost any user without special knowledge and experience. The only condition when assembling a cellular communication with your own hands is the sequence of the above actions and a high-quality connection of all elements. The increase in the signal is in direct proportion to the quality of the performance.

To improve the quality of communication, the following amplification principles are used:

Checking the signal level

Before you strengthen anything, you need to catch something. We determine the range of working frequencies of voice and Internet. The image above illustrates the entire spectrum of the frequencies involved: television signal, wi-fi, DECT, GSM, LTE, etc. It is important to understand in what range the base station at the point being checked is transmitted by the Internet. It can be transmitted in UMTS 900 and UMST 2100.

In Russia, 3G signal has its own standard: UMTS 900 and UMST 2100.

All smartphones and 3G modems work using both these standards. In cities, due to a small coverage radius, but a higher signal transmission speed and stability of work with a large number of connections, the UMTS 2100 standard is used.

When we enter the engineering menu, various information appears, for example, the volume level, battery charging, IMEI, wi-fi, phone usage statistics. I do not recommend changing the values.

If you cannot find the parameters you need, please use a different phone. As a result, you need to define the Rx CH parameter. The first value surrounded by a red frame shows in which range the signal is received. If the value is within 10562-10838 it is UMTS 2100, if within 2937-3088 it is UMTS 900. Having determined the range of operation, you can accurately select a 3G signal amplifier, for example, high-quality Picocell 900 or Picocell 2000.

The yellow frame shows the level of 3G signal reception. Having constantly changing dynamic parameters of the signal level, we are looking for the best reception point. Less is better. Ideally, it is better to place the antenna higher on the roof, but you can find points of reliable reception inside the house.

Equipment selection
