ALEXANDER POVETKIN — ANDREY RUDENKO: A BATTLE OF VIEWS

On Saturday, July 1, a twelve-round fight of one of the most popular heavyweights in Russia and the world, Alexander Povetkin, with Ukrainian Andrey Rudenko will take place in Luzhniki in Moscow. The fight is not the most important from a purely sporting point of view, because the winner will not receive the title of world champion. And although the WBO International and WBA Inter-Continental titles are still not very significant, the fact that Povetkin entered the ring after disqualification is of greatest interest.

Povetkin's disqualification is one of the loudest and most confusing stories of the past year. Sasha was one step away from the fight for the WBC title (the most prestigious boxing association), but his fight against the current belt holder American Deontay Wilder was canceled in May last year due to meldonium found in Alexander's blood. Did he take it before the drug was banned, or after? They sorted it out, sorted it out and again allowed Sasha to the title fight, however, not with Wilder, who had just defended his title by that time, but with the Canadian Bermain Stivern - the athletes had to challenge the interim WBC title. But even this fight did not take place due to the fact that another illegal drug, ostarine, was allegedly found in one of Povetkin's doping samples. The Canadian immediately refused the fight - they say, I do not want to box with those who use doping. The promoters had to release into the ring the Frenchman Joan Duop, who was in store for an emergency, whom Sasha successfully knocked out. This fight, held in Yekaterinburg in December, was Povetkin's last fight to date.

In March, the WBC suspended Povetkin for an indefinite period with the possibility to appeal. This happened after Povetkin was finally found guilty of doping (the Russian side, however, continues to dispute the violation with meldonium, which Sasha, according to his lawyers, took even before the drug entered the list of prohibited drugs). However, although Povetkin was excluded from the ratings of the leading associations (in addition to the WBC, these are the WBA, IBF and WBO), his promoters continued to work on the possibility of holding fights with the participation of our boxer. The first of them will be the duel with the Ukrainian Andrei Rudenko.

Andrei is 33 years old, he is 9th in the WBO rankings and 13th in the list of the best according to the WBC (according to the IBF he also ranks 13th). The last fight, like Alexander, he had in December. In general, the statistics are not bad - 33 fights, 31 wins, two losses, and even then not by knockout, but by points. At first glance, a little worse than the 37-year-old Povetkin (31 wins, one loss). And yet, the chances of the Russians in this fight look significantly higher.

And a couple more interesting details. Three years ago, Rudenko was... Povetkin's sparring partner. His duties included preparing Sasha for the fight with Cameroonian Carlos Takam. And a year earlier, Andrei sparred with Wladimir Klitschko, training the best fighter on the planet at that time before the fight with ... Alexander Povetkin. Such are the vicissitudes of boxing fate ...

On July 1, 2017, Russian Alexander Povetkin defeated Ukrainian Andrey Rudenko in a fight for the WBO International heavyweight title.

Povetkin - Rudenko: the fight ended with the victory of the Russian

Former "regular" world champion according to the World Boxing Association (WBA) Russian Alexander Povetkin defeated Ukrainian Andrey Rudenko in the fight for the international title of the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and the WBA continental heavyweight title.

In a 12-round fight, which took place on July 1, 2017 at the Moscow State Central Concert Hall Rossiya, Povetkin defeated his opponent on points by unanimous decision of the judges 120:109, 120:108.

Throughout all 12 rounds of the fight, the Russian boxer dominated, was faster and more accurate. idhumkz opponent, surpassing him in almost all components of the battle.

In the first round, after one of the exchanges, Rudenko signaled that he had received a neck injury. A few minutes the Ukrainian came to his senses, eventually decided to continue the meeting.

Povetkin has demonstrated excellent endurance. The Russian set a fairly high pace of the fight, which the Ukrainian coped with, but he failed to oppose anything to a more experienced opponent.

Recall that Povetkin held the previous fight in December in Yekaterinburg, knocking out the Frenchman Joan Duop, who replaced the Canadian Bermain Stivern. Then on the day of the fight it became known that one of the doping tests of the Russian before the fight for the interim WBC title against Stiverne showed the presence of a small amount of the banned substance ostarine (20 picograms). The other two samples of the athlete were clean.

A doping investigation is currently underway, which will be completed shortly.

(GTSKZ "Russia"), as part of a major (first in 2017) tournament of the promotional company "World of Boxing". The name of the opponent of the Russian Knight has not yet been announced. Povetkin held his last fight in December 2016, knocking out the Frenchman Joan Duop.

History of doping

The name of Alexander Povetkin has recently been increasingly mentioned in the context of doping stories, which entails a lot of negativity on the part of the townsfolk. However, it is worth recalling that, therefore, it is premature to hang labels.

And it all started on the morning of December 17, on the day of the fight for the interim WBC world title between Povetkin and Stiverne. At that moment, when it seemed that nothing could interfere with the long-awaited fight, a notification came from the WBC office about a positive doping test for a Russian boxer.

WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman tweeted: “WADA has notified the WBC of the discovery of the banned substance ostarine in Povetkin’s test. We will deal with everything as soon as possible." As a result, the WBC withdrew its sanction for the Povetkin-Stiverne fight. Thus, the title of interim world champion is no longer at stake in this fight.

Moreover, Stiverne completely refused to hold this fight, and Joan Duop was called to replace him, who had a rating fight with Povetkin. The strong Frenchman held out until the sixth round, and then was knocked out. After the fight, Povetkin expressed his respect for his replacement opponent and spoke about the history of doping. According to the Russian, he has no idea how the banned drug ended up in his body. Moreover, a truly microscopic dose appeared in the official reports (only 20 picograms).

At the same time, two out of three samples turned out to be clean, which also indicates the non-systematic use of the drug. In other words, the Russian athlete certainly did not take illegal substances in preparation for the fight with Steven.

Court. coming

The situation is aggravated by the fact that the history of doping is repeated twice. In May, Povetkin was convicted of using meldonium, which resulted in a lengthy lawsuit with the current WBC champion American Deontay Wilder, the fight with which was canceled in a similar scenario, after which Wilder and Lou DiBella's promotion company DiBella Entertainment sued the Russian. Povetkin and his team filed a counterclaim in which they accused the American side of spreading false accusations that tarnished the fighter's reputation.

And so far the situation is developing in such a way that the jury ruled that Povetkin took meldonium after it was banned (the ban came into force on January 1, 2016). Consequently, the Russian side lost the first instance.

As a result, the World Boxing Council decided to suspend Povetkin indefinitely for repeated anti-doping rule violations and fined him $250,000. indefinite term. Povetkin must pay a $250,000 fine to the WBC.

Who is the opponent and what version?

Considering the fact that four boxing federations immediately excluded Povetkin from their ratings, three world ones (the World Boxing Council (WBC), the International Boxing Federation (IBF) and the World Boxing Organization (WBO) refused to return the athlete to his rating, which he left earlier) , as well as the European Boxing Council (EBU). Therefore, the choice of the Russian fighter is small, and, most likely, he will move along the line of the oldest boxing organization - the WBA.

Povetkin was already a World Boxing Association champion. Having won the vacant title against Ruslan Chagaev of Uzbekistan in August 2011, Povetkin made four successful defenses (Boswell, Hook, Rahman, Wawrzyk), losing it against Ukrainian Wladimir Klitschko in October 2013 (Klitschko was the Super Champion at the time) .

At the moment, the British Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko are preparing to play for the WBA heavyweight title (another Briton Tyson Fury, having defeated Klitschko Jr., decided to retire, so the belt became vacant). Therefore, the prospects that open up for Povetkin, who aims for the championship, are very good. The top 5 of the WBA absolute division now looks like this: Luis Ortiz, Wladimir Klitschko, Alexander Ustinov, Shannon Briggs, Fres Oquendo. Perhaps among these names there is also a future rival of the Russian fighter.

In the end, no one canceled the return of Povektin to the ratings of the above organizations. As Alexander's former colleague, ex-WBA champion, and now State Duma deputy Nikolai Valuev, rightly noted, everything depends on money. Boxing is a business, so as soon as big money is at stake, many of those who turned their backs deign to turn their faces. “I see no obstacles for Alexander to return to his former positions. What will stop him? Not in the WBC and IBF rankings? As they were taken out of the ratings, they will be returned back. This is professional boxing - as soon as a large amount is at stake, you will see that everything will return to normal. I won’t say what kind of fight Povetkin needs now, I can’t even imagine it. There are a number of rivals who are afraid of Sasha, they sing a song about doping and can do this endlessly, ”said Valuev.

Who else from the fighters will perform on July 1?

As part of the preliminary bouts, the ex-IBF/IBO light welterweight world champion Eduard Troyanovsky will enter the ring. The name of his opponent is still unknown. Many expected to see his rematch with Julius Indongo (21-0-0, 11 KOs). However, the offender of the Russian (Troyanovsky suffered a single defeat at the hands of a fighter from Namibia, losing by a heavy knockout in the first round, losing his championship belts) went to visit the WBA champion Scot Ricky Burns (41-5-1, 14 KOs). Their unification fight will take place on April 15 in Glasgow. That is why the idea of an immediate revenge is illusory even theoretically. On the other hand, to have an intermediate fight, and then to fight for the title is also a great prospect for Troy.

Hot Russian prospects who do not know defeat in the pro ring: cruisers Alexei Papin and Rashid Kodzoev, featherweight Valery Tretyakov and heavyweight Andrey Afonin will have regular rating fights. The winner of the reality show "Fight in the Big City" Georgy Chelokhsaev will make his debut under the auspices of the World of Boxing company (in addition to the main prize of the show - an apartment in the Moscow region - the fighter received a contract with the promotion company of Andrei Ryabinsky).

Russian Alexander Povetkin defeated the Ukrainian Andrey Rudenko , having won the international title of WBO and WBA Interconti.

On July 1, in Moscow, at the State Central Concert Hall "Russia" (Luzhniki), a professional boxing evening was held, the main event of which was a duel between 37-year-old Russian heavyweight Alexander Povetkin (32-1-0, 23 KOs) and 33-year-old Ukrainian Andrey Rudenko (31-3-0, 19 KOs). At stake was the vacant WBO international title and WBA Interconti.

The expectation for the duel Povetkin - Rudenko was tense. The events of recent years are too memorable when, first, a week before the scheduled fight, one (Deontay Wilder) breaks down, and six months later, on the day of the fight, the second (Bermain Stivern) opponent refuses to enter the ring. That is why this time the organizers, the fans and Povetkin himself were probably able to exhale only at the moment when the referee in the ring Viktor Panin gave the boxing command.

You can watch the full fight between Povetkin and Rudenko in this video.

The fight began and almost ended after the first tight exchange. At the exit from the attack, the Russian caught the back of the opponent's head with a glove, and after a sharp movement of his head, Rudenko felt a pain sensation that almost turned the fight into a farce.

The Ukrainian signaled that he was unable to continue the meeting. Holding his head sideways, he consulted with a staff doctor who arrived in time for the ring, with whom they came to the conclusion that a pinch had occurred. It was this phrase that the referee said when he approached the supervisor's table to give the reason for stopping the fight. The pause dragged on, and it was necessary to understand whether the Ukrainian was ready to continue the meeting. Otherwise, he could safely write out the defeat of TCR.

The corner of Rudenko, who arrived in time to the ring, had an extremely emotional conversation with him about something, and Andrei decided to continue the fight. Otherwise, the real irony of fate once again awaited Povetkin and Co. Going through six incomplete rounds in almost two years while being at the peak of form is out of the ordinary. In addition, having shown courage, Rudenko remained in the eyes of the fans a warrior with a big heart and avoided the saddest fate - being booed.

The main character of the film "Stone Head" is the boxer Yegor Golovin, whose role was played by ex-WBA champion Nikolai Valuev. Golovin can easily hold out in the ring for many rounds due to the fact that he almost does not feel pain, for which he bears such a brutal nickname. In Rudenko's case, his ability to "keep in the ring for many rounds by feeling almost no pain" actually allowed the fight to last the full 12 rounds.

Rudenko did not avoid the fight, but acted as the second number, periodically catching the opponent on the counterattacks. But this was clearly not enough in a duel with an opponent who was really stronger, faster. I really liked Povetkin. In particular, I was impressed by his physical form, on the basis of which he built his game plan. Due to the high pace and constant pressure (Povetkin hung over the opponent like a shadow, not giving him room to maneuver), Alexander gained his advantage from round to round.

In the first half of the battle, his trademark double left side was clearly visible, which the Russian performs at the jump. And if the opponent copes with the first hook and begins to back away along the displacement trajectory, lowering the block, then the second, no less weighty, punch flies to the same point. At the same time, Alexander tried to diversify his attacking actions and did not shy away from going to the exchange.

Rudenko acted in the style of a counter-puncher. The Ukrainian tried to fail Povetkin and deliver his accurate and strong blow. But that wasn't enough against an opponent whose speed and skill were an order of magnitude superior to your own. That is why in the actions of Rudenko, recessions sometimes formed, during which he missed, and a lot, but each time, by some miracle, he managed to stay on his feet.

The fifth round, perhaps, was the best performed by Rudenko (it is quite likely that it was in the fifth three-minute period that one of the side referees scored a draw 10:10, all other rounds on the cards of all three referees were in favor of the Russian). In this segment, Andrei succeeded in several spurts, during which he brought his shock right to the target - Povetkin's head.

It is curious to look at the statistics of blows thrown by the Russian. Purely visually, he interrupted the opponent, and this advantage was total. Why failed to knock out Rudenko? The question is rhetorical, because it was initially clear that this guy is not as simple as it might seem at first glance. There is not a single case of a knockdown in his biography (before the fight with Povetkin, Rudenko suffered two defeats on points from Lucas Brown and Hughie Fury), which is very rare for a heavyweight fighter. The ability to take a hit from Rudenko cannot be taken away.

Povetkin: I knew that this was a strong opponent who would not give up just like that. Something did not work out, but, probably, this fight had to go like this in order to gain some experience.

Povetkin, on the other hand, was aimed at the early completion of the battle. That is why the Russian often charged for a blow and got involved in a clinch, which was only in the hands of the opponent. After the fight, Povetkin admitted that he wanted to do everything beautifully, so at times he was in a hurry, as a result of which the fight turned out to be somewhat blurry. At the same time, the Russian admitted that he had gained a lot of experience. “I would like to thank everyone for their support, I really need it. I knew that this was a strong opponent who would not give up just like that. Something did not work out, but, probably, this fight had to go like this in order to gain some experience. On such rivals I grow. What's next? You have to ask my manager. I have great feelings, this fight was needed, I had to breathe 12 rounds. We will move on, correct mistakes, become stronger, ”Povetkin said immediately after the end of the battle.

The result of the meeting following the results of 12 rounds of the battle could hardly surprise anyone. Povetkin won by unanimous decision - 120:109, 120:108 twice.

The head of the World of Boxing company, Andrey Ryabinsky, expressed a desire to organize a fight for his ward against the current WBO world champion, unbeaten New Zealander Joseph Parker.
What's next?

The question is more than relevant, as time goes by and plays against the 37-year-old Povetkin. It is hardly necessary to exchange for another intermediate fight, but it is worth looking for meetings with a full-fledged champion according to one of the versions that returned the Russian to their ratings.

Andrey Ryabinsky, the head of the World of Boxing company, which deals with Povetkin, expressed a desire to organize a fight for his ward against the current WBO world champion, unbeaten New Zealander Joseph Parker.

But this option is still under development, because in the near future Parker will fight against another undefeated boxer - Hughie Fury. At the same time, the meeting of the fighters will take place on the territory of the applicant - in the UK.

The Russian team is also interested in WBA champion Joseph Parker, but, according to Ryabinsky, it will take much more time to prepare for the fight with this fighter.

Whatever the route of the Russian Knight in terms of conquering the champion Olympus, he will not lose interest from this. Povetkin is back, and that's the most important thing.
