Not so long ago I wrote about my experience with the ML-1660, now I want to cover the topic of connecting this printer in ubuntu linux. The topic is notable for the fact that there are options here, otherwise I would not write.
When I first bought this printer (a couple of years ago), Ubuntu Linux was not very friendly with this new printer at the time. And then I began to look for a Linux driver for it, since it was not on the disk that came with the printer, everything is as usual, only for Windows.
How to install samsung printer in linux?
After some searching, I found such a driver and successfully installed it. And although time has passed, and now Linux picks up this printer perfectly, nevertheless, native drivers are still sometimes better, since they come with a native printer management utility that has more functions than the standard Ubuntu program.
How to install samsung printer drivers
First, let's download the driver itself: Driver Samsung ML-1660 Linux.
Unpack the archive. If the unpacked folder is in your home directory, then go to it:
cd UnifiedLinuxDriver_0.86/
The folder contains a file autorun. Run this file with the command:
Sudo sh autorun
After that, a graphical installer window should appear:
We start the installation, as we usually do in Windows. I will not describe all the initial steps, everything is clear intuitively. It is better to turn on the printer before installation so that the program sees it. At some point, the following window will appear:
As you can see, here you can install the driver almost on . Of course, I choose mine, Samsung ML-1660. If your samsung printer not in the list, look for a more recent version of the driver, as this one is already outdated and will become even more obsolete over time.
After installation, a shortcut to the program appears in the APPLICATIONS menu. We launch.
Here is such a utility. Not to say that I need it now, but if you have new printer or for some reason your Linux does not see your model, then you can try installing the printer driver in this way.

Driver installation in Windows 10
Download Samsung Universal Print Driver from our website and start installing drivers for your printer. Select a folder or drive on your computer and download a program that will allow you to work with your printing and scanning device. You should understand that the pictures below may differ from your program. Since developers can show certain windows and settings specifically for your printer.
Double click on the installer and wait for the window with the first installation step to appear. Select "Install" and click "OK" to proceed with the installation.
Check the box and agree to the installation terms. Click "Next" and proceed with the installation of the universal program.
Select suitable option for installation:
- Installation occurs for the first time - "New printer".
- Printer search - "Existing printer".
- The printer is not connected to the computer - "No printer connected".
Specify the printer connection interface - USB, Network or Wireless network(Wifi), and then click Next. Usually "USB" is indicated.
Turn on the printer and connect the USB cable. If a window appears with the Found New Hardware Wizard, close it. Click "Next" and wait until the printer is detected in operating system.
Installation takes several minutes. Wait while the files are copied to HDD computer.
Click the "Finish" button and start working on the printer. In some cases, you will need to restart your computer to fully install the printer driver.
Usually for correct operation printer, you need to download the driver from a special installation disk, which comes with the printer itself. But if you need to connect a printer or MFP, this very installation disk may not be at hand. And it often happens that the driver was developed under Windows XP and it simply does not work on Windows 8.
If set Canon printer 810 from the original disk is impossible, you can always do it manually: the method is simple and accessible to everyone.
Method one
For Mac OS X, go to the Apple menu and click " System settings". Select "Print and Fax" and click on the "+" icon. To start the installation process, select a new printer from the list.

Method two
If the printing device cannot be connected through the control panel of the computer, then you can use an alternative method and download the driver from the printer manufacturer's support page on the Internet.
Before installing a printer without a disk, you need to find out the exact model of the device, as well as the version and bit depth (in bits) of the computer's operating system. The brand and model are listed on the front of the printer itself, such as Canon lbp 810 or Samsung scx 3400 etc.
We find out the bitness of the OS by right-clicking on the “This PC” icon and selecting “Properties”.

Downloading a driver to a computer from the official website is also beneficial because setting up through the operating system provides only the basic functionality necessary for the printing process, while installing an extended version from the manufacturer makes it possible to correctly set up the scanning program as well.
On the printer manufacturer's website, under the Support section, look for specific model HP deskjet or scx and download the appropriate driver version by clicking on the floppy disk. Typically, the driver on the computer is loaded in the form archive file, which must be unzipped before installation. Perhaps, after unzipping, several files will appear in the folder different type. Among them, by name, you need to find exactly the driver that suits your operating system. Such a file will have an *.exe extension (for example, for the i-SENSYS MF3010 MFP, when installed on a computer with 32-bit Windows 8, the driver is called MF3010MFDriversV2095W32RU.exe).
After opening the required file, a window for installing the program on the computer will appear.
