A quick review of the Android smartphone HTC Wildfire S. Review of the HTC Wildfire: fire on the Android market

Problem solved

Advantages: + Today's price - I took it last year for 3990 without any contracts and agreements. Even if the device is old, but for such a quality of performance - an extreme deal! + Metal frame at the base, soft-touch throughout back cover, nice design (especially for the earpiece, it resembles the radiator grille of a car) and precise fit of materials - I don't see any backlash. + I specifically wanted to find one of the smallest android smartphones with digestible characteristics, and I found it - a 3.2 "full-fledged smartphone in my pocket, and in the palm of my hand because of the swollen shape lies like a glove. + Hard 3.5mm audio jack! The device a couple of times, flying out from my hands, I remained hanging on the headphone wire calmly. + HVGA screen (320 x 480) - not a stupid QVGA for the most budgetary droids, the software is drawn as it should; a sufficiently high-quality matrix for such a price (inverted degrees from 140-150, but loses in colors and brightness at angles.) Plus, the screen seems to have a polarizing filter for anti-glare. There is no oleophobia. + Sense covers almost all the shortcomings of the old android, especially the part that is responsible for calls. In addition, 2.3.x android works here surprisingly smooth. + 512MB random access memory for such a resolution, the screen is more than enough with a margin. + Nimble 3g, especially for such a small phone. + The quality of both the reception of communication and the direct transmission of conversations. + Not a bad 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash (which can be made with a flashlight on custom), but the quality is highly dependent on the lighting. + Lives well in time when used as a dialer and a player. + Fully charged in just over two hours. + In the settings there is a power saving mode when a critical point is reached, it is convenient. + The external speaker is loud enough, but it is better not to block it in any way. + Combined charger (unit + Micro-USB). + FM radio! + Well, there are 2GB SD in the kit - seeds, but it's nice for the first time, until you buy a new one. Flaws: - old android(2.3.x) - you can upgrade to Cyanogen 10.1 (4.x), I personally installed the cyan from the OWL Project (4.2.2): a bunch of additional buns, a standard interface, but there is still no FM radio and the camera is in stock much better - rolled back to stock. - An Estonian-made processor with a set of instructions armv6 - most toys will not work even if they crack, but the device loves to think. - VERY little built-in memory for applications (~ 110MB available to the user, of which updating Google services will take up to 40MB! internal memory... How did manufacturers save money on matches before! The problem is solved by creating an ext-partition on the memory card, to which you can transfer applications (but you need root). On the stock rooted firmware, I use Link2SD from the market, and before that I need to repartition the SD into two partitions (fat + ext) through recovery. - Foolishly processed inner edges of the case (those that are adjacent to the glass of the display), because of which dust and small debris can sometimes get clogged there. - Hard 3.5mm jack! None of the plugs went in to the very end - tenths of a millimeter remain, which is why sometimes the plug can "go to one contact" from the socket - one channel is playing, the other is disconnected. But until the end, he himself will not fall out, since the rest of the plug still holds the dofig tightly. - The audio section is so-so, you can slightly correct it with an equalizer, in particular, PowerAmp. - Micro-USB on the side of the device. - God forbid, forget to turn off the connected to Wi-Fi networks device, in the morning you will frantically look for a charger. - By the way, the charger is short. Commentary: I use it as a dialer / player / vk / camera and periodically cling to the waffle for the Internet. Would put a four, but not for such a price. And there is nothing more to comment on: the device is nice, you will find it for the price<5к и не страшен старый андроид - отличный выбор.

HTC Tattoo was the first experiment of HTC in the niche of budget smartphones running on Android OS. And although some interesting and original solutions were used in its performance, for example, replaceable panels with the possibility of ordering a panel with a personally selected pattern, with the hardware part everything was not so rosy. The materials of the case are not of the highest quality, a simple screen, a low-power processor, and so on. The next "swallow" was a noticeably improved, but still controversial HTC Wildifre. Today we will consider a kind of successor to this model, find out if HTC has managed to learn from its own mistakes. Meet - HtcWildfireS.

To begin with, it is worth drawing the reader's attention to the fact that the electronic giant HTC has never been famous for the humane prices of the devices offered. Yes, the flagship models from this manufacturer have always been of excellent quality in every sense, but for them the issue of price-quality ratio is not worth it. But with budget models that are profitable for the average consumer, everything is not so rosy - there was not and now there is not much experience in HTC in the release of interesting models of smartphones for little money. But given the controversial and controversial sales of Tattoo and especially the first Wildfire, HTC is taking proactive steps to blur the lines between different classes of mobile devices. Already in the first "light" the company uses the materials of the case, identical to the flagship at that time HTC Desire, and also manages to use its own software developments on much more modest hardware. Well, these are probably steps in the right direction, because it is always nice, even with an inexpensive smartphone, not to feel slighted. Smartphone raises such pleasant qualities almost to the absolute.

Design by devices nice. He does not have excessive severity, and even compared to the first Wildfire, it is more frivolous, youthful. But such emancipation is not annoying. The materials and workmanship deserve the highest praise, and with a cursory glance it cannot be said that apparatus- budget model. In addition, the HTC corporate identity is felt without any problems. Along the perimeter of the front surface there is a metal insert that fits onto the side edges. The front panel is covered with glass, it is not officially stated whether it is Gorilla Glass or not, but it feels very similar to that. The surface is practically not scratched and it is not easy to damage it even with deliberate effort. Gadget available in four colors: white, black, gray and purple. White smartphones have a back surface made of glossy plastic, the other three color options have matte plastic with a soft-touch coating. In general, the smartphone is very pleasant to the touch, like most HTC devices, but the white model still tends to slip in a wet hand. The battery cover does not creak at all and is devoid of the slightest backlashes, the fastening seems to be very reliable. The volume control button, which is also often prone to unpleasant chattering after intensive daily use for several months, is made with high quality, devoid of such an annoying drawback. Dimensions (edit) apparatus are 101.3 × 59.4 × 12.4 mm, and the weight is 105 grams. Overall, the smartphone is compact enough to fit in almost any pocket, not to mention handbags, backpacks, and purses. During a conversation, holding it with one hand near your ear is also a pleasure. Management is standard, and in addition to the touch screen, you can find four standard buttons on the front panel: Home, Menu, Back and Search. The backlighting of the touch buttons is pleasant, white. On the top end, on the right side of it, there is a power button, which also performs the function of blocking. On the front panel in the upper part of it, as usual, you can find the earpiece covered with a mesh, near which the light and proximity sensors are located. There is also a light indicator that notifies you of various events: it blinks green when you missed a call or message, lights up green when charging is complete or when connected to a computer, blinks red when the battery is low, and lights up red when charging. The microUSB connector, which is used to connect a charger or USB cable, is on the left side, a 3.5 mm jack for a headset or headphones is on the top. The slots for a microSD memory card and a SIM card are hidden by the battery compartment cover, and the flash card can be replaced without removing the battery.

HtcWildfireS equipped with a 3.2-inch display with a resolution of 320x480 pixels, it is made using TFT technology and is capable of displaying up to 256 thousand colors. The picture is quite juicy and seems to be alive despite the relatively low chromaticity. But the margin of brightness and viewing angles leave much to be desired - the quality of an inexpensive matrix affects. However, working with a smartphone is still quite pleasant. The sensor is made using capacitive technology, there is support for up to five simultaneous touches.

The camera has a resolution of 5 megapixels, is equipped with autofocus and LED flash. The camera eye rises slightly above the back of the device. There is a standard set of moods, but nothing supernatural. The picture quality is slightly better than the first Wildfire. Under good lighting conditions telephone may well replace an inexpensive digital compact. Pages with printed text can also be photographed without problems for later recognition or simply reading. Video is shot in a resolution up to 640x480 pixels. Medium quality. Pleases the ability to zoom and focus in real time. You can also shoot movies with the flash on.

Apparatus built on the Qualcomm MSM7227 platform with a 600 MHz processor and 512 megabytes of RAM. The built-in storage capacity is also 512 megabytes, which is generally enough, since you can use a memory card to store data. Moreover, the operating system Android version 2.3 is installed with support for installing applications on a memory card. The operating speed is typical for an inexpensive smartphone. That is, in general, for most tasks his enough, but sometimes he "thinks" for a few seconds, slows down when opening 2-3 tabs in the browser, and so on. Unpretentious toys go without problems, but with heavier ones the smartphone copes with difficulty and not always successfully. It is also worth noting the default HTC Sense user interface extension, which is pleasant and convenient to work with; this is really an improvement compared to the standard Android 2.3 shell.

Gadget can operate in the bands GSM (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) and UMTS (900/2100 MHz). “On board there is Wi-Fi b / g / n, Bluetooth 3.0 + EDR, and A-GPS. Wireless interfaces do not cause any complaints, they work stably. In order to save energy, they can be turned off.

The rechargeable battery is a removable lithium-ion with a capacity of 1230 mAh. The claimed battery life is 7 hours of talk time and 360 hours of standby time, but really telephone Like most Android smartphones, it "lives" on average one working day. The indicator is not the best for an inexpensive mobile device - "classmates" apparatus usually keep from one charge for one and a half to two days with an average intensity of use.

In general, a smartphone running on Android 2.3 leaves a pleasant impression, and the build quality is impressive. This is an excellent entry-level device, but the price, nevertheless, seems a bit overpriced, however, in comparison with its previous attempts to “break into” the budget market, HTC is clearly taking steps in the right direction.

You can also watch a video review HtcWildfireS:

At first glance, it may seem that HTC is positioned exclusively as a smartphone manufacturer with a claim to premium, but this is not entirely true. Today the middle price segment is also becoming important for the company, in which its competitors are already widely represented. At one time, the Wildfire model became quite popular not only due to its characteristics, but also in conditions when the Android smartphone market was just beginning to form. Customers today have become more demanding and want more functionality for less money. HTC should have foreseen this with the Wildfire S smartphone, so let's see if it can replicate the success of its predecessor and strengthen the company's position.

Performance, touch buttons too close to screen

Verdict

Design, build quality

The appearance of Wildfire S is quite consistent with the design of the latest models of the company. Starting with Legend, HTC began to actively use aluminum in its smartphones. And what's nice is that this metal is used not only in top-end devices. In Wildfire S, a rim around the body is made of it, which gives it additional rigidity, and, of course, has a positive effect on the appearance of the smartphone. It looks at the level of older and more expensive models. Almost the entire front panel of Wildfire S is occupied by a 3.2-inch capacitive touch display covered with Gorilla Glass. It is difficult to scratch it, but this does not mean that minor scratches cannot appear on it if handled roughly. Directly under the display are four touch-sensitive function keys, which are standard for the latest HTC models.

At the top of the smartphone is a 3.5 mm headphone jack and an on / off button, which is also responsible for locking / unlocking the screen. On the left side of the case is a convenient volume rocker and a microUSB port for charging and data transfer. The right side of the device is completely free of controls and connectors. The back side of Wildfire S is covered with a removable battery cover, which is made of dense and slightly rough plastic. It doesn’t appear to be strong, but in practice it does not flex under pressure and is unlikely to be damaged if the phone is dropped on a hard surface.

The lid fits snugly to the body and does not play, there are no signs that it may come loose in the future. Despite the small dimensions of 101.3x59.4x12.4 mm and the weight of 105 grams, Wildfire S lies well in the hand and does not slip. Apart from the display, no fingerprints are visible on the case. The build quality of the smartphone is at a good level.

Display

Unlike the older models of the new line, which use a display with a Super LCD matrix, Wildfire S received a 3.2-inch TFT screen with a resolution of 320x480 pixels. We must give the company its due, the display looks good, both in terms of color rendition and viewing angles. However, the brightness margin and color saturation of Super LCD screens is still higher. The display of Wildfire S behaves well in the sun, but in direct light it still noticeably fades. HTC is using new touchpads in its latest smartphones and the Wildfire S is no exception, the responsiveness of its screen is excellent.

Interface

Out of the box, Wildfire S comes with Android 2.3.3 operating system, on top of which is installed the proprietary HTC Sense 2.1 interface. Unlike older models, and despite the same version of the shell, Wildfire S does not have several applications that are available in the Incredible S and Desire S. In a cheaper smartphone, HTC decided not to add a car navigation program, as well as an e-book reader. ... Considering the size of the display, this is an expected step. As for the rest, Wildfire S does not differ in software from the older models. The smartphone comes preinstalled with Google services such as Gmail, Search, Maps, Calendar, YouTube, Google Talk and Android Market. In Android 2.3.3 itself, the speed and stability of the system have been improved, additional power settings have appeared, which allows you to fine-tune the power consumption of your smartphone.

Ergonomics

As already mentioned above, in HTC Wildfire S a high-quality touch panel is used, thanks to which it is pleasant to work with the display, it responds well to pressing. Even a person with large fingers, after a short getting used to, will be able to quickly type text on the Wildfire S virtual keyboard. The smartphone also supports Multi-Touch technology, which has already become a standard for modern models and is actively used in the browser and photo gallery. There were no complaints about the display's performance during testing, even despite its small, by modern standards, dimensions.

But the device is not all right with ergonomics, the reason is the touch keys, which are too close to the screen. As a result, while working with the display, there is a risk of pressing the touch button, especially when typing on the keyboard. After getting used to this feature of the device, false presses are quite rare, in addition, people with small fingers may not face this problem. But this approach is still worth writing down as the blunders of HTC designers. In the latest smartphones, the company follows the same layout of controls and connectors. In our opinion, it has been chosen very well. A headphone jack, a screen lock / unlock button are located on the top end, and on the left side of the case there is a volume rocker and a microUSB port.

Performance

For Wildfire S, HTC has chosen a processor that is not the most productive. This is a Qualcomm MSM 7227 chip with a frequency of 600 MHz, which is quite small by modern standards. Also, the smartphone has 512 MB of RAM and 512 MB of permanent memory, which can be expanded with microSD cards. This set of characteristics is sufficient for the normal operation of Android 2.3.3 and preinstalled programs. But with third-party applications, as well as games, problems can arise, not all of them are unpretentious to the processing power of the processor. In synthetic tests Neocore and Quadrant, the smartphone is gaining about 35-38 FPS and about 600 points, respectively.

For Wildfire S, HTC chose not the most productive processor

Camera

The Wildfire S has a 5 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash. Judging by the quality of the pictures, this is the same photomodule as in the Desire S. In good lighting the camera takes high-quality photos, but the worse the light is, the less details it can capture. The shooting speed of the device compared to Wildfire has grown very decently. Now the smartphone spends no more than 2-3 seconds on focusing and releasing the virtual shutter. Video Wildfire S shoots in a modest resolution of 640x480 pixels at 24 frames per second.

Sample photos

Exploitation

During testing HTC Wildfire S there were no problems with using it as a phone. The device holds the operator's signal well. Despite the absence of additional microphones for the noise canceling system in Wildfire S, the device is able to transmit and receive high-quality speech even in noisy places. The volume of the smartphone's ringer is at an average level, but the vibration alert is really powerful, it will be difficult to miss a call with it. Wildfire S is capable of replacing an mp3-player, it produces a fairly loud and high-quality sound to the headphones. But watching HD video on a smartphone will not work, the processor simply cannot cope with it. The device uses a 1250 mAh battery, which is enough for two days of operation in medium load mode. This is an excellent indicator for an Android smartphone, although it was achieved, to a large extent, by a weak hardware platform.

conclusions

HTC Wildfire S can be called a "strong middling" in the Android smartphone market. It cannot boast of high performance and impeccable ergonomics, but at the same time it has a pleasant design, workmanship and good overall functionality. The success of this model will largely depend on the pricing policy of HTC, but there is no doubt that there will be buyers for it, because in general Wildfire S leaves a pleasant impression after use.

What did not like

The processor is very weak, built-in memory, RAM

What we liked

Size, camera with flash, htc sense

What did not like

What we liked

What did not like

Very weak processor (if you want to play games just forget), there is no second camera.

What we liked

The phone is good for everyone except:

What did not like

no file dispatcher (you also need to download through the market), the problem with installing ringtones (the sound quality is poor)

What we liked

1. excellent sensor 2. convenient menu 3. excellent player 4. excellent speaker 5. fast Internet access 6. fits well in the hand

What did not like

Out of memory
Can't get root rights

What we liked

Price Appearance It fits comfortably in the hand Good camera Good battery

What did not like

1) The battery ... sometimes not enough for a day!
2) The screen ... the usual scratches (I put it inadvertently with the keys, scratched)
3) Constantly goes to the Internet, he eats money, he needs a bezlemite, which I connected ... I ate 150, 300 rubles a day without unlimited ... now I pay 130 rubles a month for net + calls ... the old phone cost 50 rubles a month ...
4) Little free space, a lot of unnecessary programs, if it were possible to delete everything and install only 6 ... ICQ, Skype, navigator, maps, standard browser, and standard player ... the rest is not needed at all ...
6. you cannot move applications to the memory card, more precisely, you can, but not all !!!

What we liked

Gorgeous in everything except flaws

What did not like

I don't really like the menu. Photo for some reason simultaneously in "camera photos" and "all photos". Two folders of the same thing. if you delete - then automatically in two folders. What is the meaning of the two duplicate folders is unclear.
SMS are deleted immediately by a branch, and not separately. How to do it normally - I did not find it, and unnecessary ones hang with the necessary ones.
And the main insanity - when you climb to call, you should accidentally press the wrong person - immediately the call goes automatically! What is the point in the "call" button? Only if you dial separately on the keyboard, which forcibly climbs on the half-screen and you need to constantly remove it. As if this is the most frequent way to call ... Therefore, in order to make a more reliable call, it is easier to go into contacts and from there choose a number and decide what to do with it (SMS, call, etc.) But it takes longer. In general, some kind of stupid ill-conceivedness of the simplest functions.
For typing in SMS - even my female fingers - like a set of sausages, you always get to the wrong letter! And the little finger is finally uncomfortable.
Well, the problem was with the transfer of data from the SIM card. According to the description, everything is simple - but in fact, the menu did not contain the described buttons, which should have copied data from the SIM card for one or two times. I had to struggle with bluetooth. The salesperson immediately showed me all this on an exhibition copy. Found it quickly and easily. And exactly in another place. But I break the whole phone, having looked around the entire manual - I did not find anything simpler, except for the coincidence of the instructions for transferring the bluetooth.

What we liked

And so fully written. But I have not yet appreciated them. The main ones are a good screen, a camera, and touch controls are normal.

What did not like

BATTERY is not enough for a day with minimal use (this is not counting ringing and the Internet) .....
SMS messages, before that I had phones with buttons, I never liked the sensor, but I decided to try it, it's some kind of horror, the screen is scratched (it's good that the film is on it), you don't get into the letters (it's good at least there is a dictionary) when you press on a space, it comes out of your message because the buttons are next to it, putting a contact, it immediately switches to the type mms ...

What we liked

Of course, there are many advantages, and the fact that it has a crazy speed and the fact that the camera is wonderful, it is convenient in itself, but there are also very big disadvantages, especially for the SMS lover!

What did not like

Not for games, Quiet speakers, bad camera

What we liked

Good sensor, loud call, durable body

What did not like

It reboots itself every day, displays the message: "the system is restored from an error", resets all settings.
No battery.
All sorts of unnecessary applications run in the background and eat up the battery, there is no way to turn them off.
There is little internal memory, all serious applications are installed in it, there is no way to install more necessary ones.
The phone is preinstalled with all sorts of crap that I don't need, but the memory is eating (stocks, twitter, etc. crap), you can't remove all this squalor without root rights, and removing it loses the guarantee
All buttons are virtual, i.e. while driving, answer the call with a problem, and call yourself a real crap.
The volume of the call is no, and it starts ringing when the caller has the 3rd beep

What we liked

A smart processor, a bright screen, android 2.3.5 and all the delights that follow from here, a convenient sensor, a flash, it's a flashlight, a price

What did not like

Ergonomics so-so and laaaagi.

What we liked

Price ... All other things being equal, the minimum.

What did not like

some games that do not go ... declared support for a flash player that cannot be installed ...

1) Size: It feels like it’s about to fall.
2) Price. For a phone only to call + angry birds? bust.
3) Android. Can not understand anything. Understand after Symbian in android, as after assembling cabinets in the assembly of aircraft engines.
4) Battery. Constantly you have to remember about it, and say: "The battery is about to be discharged and ...... it's already discharged"
5) Small screen.
6) Very quiet sound. You may not wake up from the alarm clock.

What we liked

Not a bad sensor and, perhaps, everything. Well, and Wi-Fi

What did not like

Fingers ache from the screen, memory is small, hangs, Poor
the screen turns on and the phone itself is turned off, the screen is not pleasant to the touch.

What did not like

The battery is very weak (!), It makes sense to immediately look for a more capacious one, otherwise it will only be enough for half a day.
The back panel creaks a little.

You can drool as much as you like on top-end devices like the Samsung Galaxy S II (a preliminary review of which we already have on our website) or HTC Sensation (which will be reviewed in the near future), but most of the buyers are still guided by the models of the middle and lower price segment. That is why HTC Wildfire S looks potentially much more interesting than its more expensive counterparts. But how good is he really?

I want to say right away that this review will be very short, since there is absolutely nothing new in HTC Wildfire S. In fact, this is the same Gratia, only in an updated case and with a new version of HTC Sense, already familiar to us from Desire S.

Specifications HTC Wildfire S

Appearance and design features

Wildfire S is a direct successor of the Gratia model (which, in turn, repeats the Legend in characteristics), but outwardly much closer to the rounded shapes of the first Wildfire. Interestingly, the bezel around the screen is made of metal, which is generally atypical for budget solutions.

Under the screen, as usual, there are touch-sensitive hardware keys. Unlike Gratia, Wildfire S lacks an optical joystick or any cursor movement whatsoever.

The back cover is made of very high quality plastic. While writing the review, I managed to drop my phone on the pavement once. Usually, such adventures have a deplorable effect on the appearance of test samples, but in the case of the HTC Wildfire S, the back cover received minimal damage. The color of the cover varies in different color variants of Wildfire S (it can be black, white or lilac), in my opinion, the phone looks the most attractive with the white cover.

In Wildfire S, as in other HTC smartphones, the speaker grill is very stylishly designed. It's nice that the proprietary "signal" LEDs that inform about the device's status have not gone anywhere either.

Screen

The Wildfire S screen is no different from the HTC Gratia screen - it has a diagonal of 3.2 inches and a resolution of 320x480 pixels. The color rendition of the screen is good, but in the sun it almost completely fades.

In direct comparison with other budget "androids" (LG Optimus One and Samsung Galaxy Gio), Wildfire S demonstrates the most natural color reproduction. The photo above shows that LG's screen turns yellow, while Samsung's is frankly green (pay special attention to the neutral-gray interface elements - the search bar, status bar, etc.).

Software

The software in HTC Wildfire S does not give any surprises: the device runs Android 2.3 with HTC Sense 2.1 installed on top (the same as in Desire S, to which I am referring you to review). In my opinion, this is the best Android shell to date, which allows HTC devices to compete almost on equal terms with the iPhone in terms of convenience.

General impressions

The Wildfire S uses a Qualcomm MSM7227 processor with a clock speed of 600 MHz, which debuted in the Legend model. In my opinion, today its performance is already a bottleneck: you can't play games on such a smartphone (even Angry Birds slow down), and many everyday programs - for example, the same browser - sometimes stutter.

As it should be for an Android smartphone, with active use, Wildfire S runs on a battery (with a capacity of 4.5 Wh) for about a day and a half, in the mobile hotspot mode it lasted for 3 hours. By the way, when used as a router, Wildfire S heats up insanely; this feature of the device is worth remembering. Otherwise, the Wildfire S behaves exactly like any other budget Android smartphone. Personally, I liked the good headphone output volume margin. For my morning runs, I use the Philips SHE9500 rather tight earplugs, and the Wildfire S is the only inexpensive Android smartphone that can swing them to an acceptable volume level.

In the dry residue

Wildfire S is an example of how manufacturers are gradually lowering the same solutions from top to bottom: if the Legend was the top model, and the Gratia was a strong middle peasant, then the Wildfire S is the “youngest” in the current HTC line. Its price today is 2800 hryvnia, which indicates that it belongs rather to the middle class, but the hardware configuration corresponds to the budget models of other manufacturers. However, in all fairness, it should be noted that, in comparison with its direct competitors, Wildfire S has a better case and a very comfortable HTC Sense shell. But whether these advantages are worth an overpayment of 600-700 hryvnia is a question that everyone must answer for himself. 5 reasons to buy HTC Wildfire S:

  • beautiful and practical body materials;
  • excellent build;
  • high-quality screen;
  • convenient size and weight;
  • shell HTC Sense.

1 reason not to buy the HTC Wildfire S:

  • discrepancy between price and positioning.
