AMD Trinity mobile processors consume less power than Intel Ivy Bridge

In a comparison test between a presentation laptop with an AMD Trinity mobile processor and ASUS N56VM (Intel Ivy Bridge processor) and ASUS N53S (Intel Sandy Bridge processor), the former lasted much longer. A laptop with an AMD Llano processor also participated.

For the test, all laptops had their brightness set to 100 km/m2 to even out their power consumption in the display section. After installing these settings, it turned out that the brightness of the display of a laptop with AMD Trinity became 40 percent of the standard, while for ASUS N56VM and ASUS N53S it became 25 and 45 percent, respectively. It should also be said that the laptop with AMD Trinity has a smaller battery compared to its opponents.

Based on the results, we can conclude that the laptop with AMD Trinity worked 46% and 70% longer than the ASUS N56VM and ASUS N53S, respectively. It can be seen that AMD has worked very hard on Trinity processors, and in terms of their energy efficiency they bypass both Intel's 3rd generation and 2nd generation processors, not to mention Llano.

Universal Assistant

Notebook Samsung 300V5A is aimed at a wide variety of applications. In fact, this is an inexpensive, "folk" model. At the same time, the manufacturer did not save on components - we have a functional, very productive laptop.

Appearance and design features

The dark matte finish of the lid looks attractive: although the lid is plastic, its coloring mimics brushed brushed aluminium. An important advantage of the coating is its immunity to fingerprints - an important advantage if the owner has to take his laptop to meetings, presentations or business trips. The shape of the case is attractive, first of all, with clear, only slightly smoothed right angles.

The lid does not have a locking latch, so the screen opens very quickly and effortlessly. Lifting the lid, you see an unusually large screen. However, this is only a visual effect: the screen here has quite the usual 15.6 inches diagonally, but the display frame is very thin. It is because of the frame that the screen seems large. The thin bezels also have a more practical advantage: a laptop with a standard screen size fits into a smaller case, and a more compact device is more convenient to take with you.

The build quality of Samsung has long been at its best, so it is needless to say that the elements of the body are assembled neatly.

A bit about the processor socket

Socket G2, also referred to as rPGA988B, is Intel's processor socket for its second and later third generation Celeron, Pentium, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7 mobile processor series and replaces the first generation mobile processors. Socket G2 processors are based on the Intel Sandy Bridge architecture and are made according to the 32-nm process technology, later processors for this socket came out with improved Ivy Bridge architecture at 22-nm. These processors use an internal QPI bus to communicate between the cores and the onboard PCI-Express controller. The memory subsystem of Socket G2 processors can operate at most in dual-channel mode at DDR3-1066, DDR3-1333, and DDR3-1600 speeds, depending on the processor used.

Along with the new processors, Intel released the 6th series of mobile chipsets for laptop motherboards: HM65, HM67, QM67, QS67 and UM67 compatible with Socket G2 (rPGA988B). Then, in 2012, the 7th series of mobile Intel chipsets was released, with support for new processors based on the Ivy Bridge core and partial support for previous processors on the Sandy Bridge core. However, due to changes in the electrical interface of Ivy Bridge processors, they cannot be compatible with motherboards based on 6-series chipsets for Sandy Bridge processors. Intel Mobile Chipset Series 7 consisted of the following chipsets: HM70, HM75, HM76, HM77, QM77, QS77, UM77.

If you have a previous generation Intel Core i7 processor installed in your laptop (the processor model has an old, three-digit digital marking), the upgrade of such processors is described in the article on upgrading the first generation Intel Core i7 processors.

Processor Package Types:

In the processor specification, on the Intel website, each processor has its package type. For a series of mobile processors Core i7 of the second and third generation, the following cases are found: PGA988, PPGA988, FCPGA988 and FCBGA1023, FCBGA1224. The number indicates the number of electrical contacts.

  1. PGA (Pin Grid Array)- housing with a matrix of conclusions. It is a square or rectangular case with located at the bottom pin contacts;
  2. PPGA (Plastic Pin Grid Array)- this is a PGA package in a plastic version;
  3. FCPGA (Flip-Chip Pin Grid Array)- one of the modifications of the PPGA package. In this case, the exposed processor die is located on the top of the case.
  4. FCBGA (Flip-Chip Ball Grid Array)- is a PGA package in which the pin contacts are replaced by solder balls. In this case, the exposed processor die is located on the top of the case.

It follows from this that for a Socket G2 (rPGA988B) processor socket without a border, as indicated in the processor package specification, the main thing is to indicate PGA988 or PPGA988 or FCPGA988. They are all equally suitable, that PGA988, that PPGA988, that FCPGA988. In other words, for us it's the same thing (Socket G2, aka rPGA988B).

However, Intel's second and third generation Core i7 processors were also available in FCBGA1023 and FCBGA1224. Processors in the performance of FCBGA1023 and FCBGA1224 cannot be replaced just like that- such processors are tightly soldered to the motherboard using an array of balls.

Note: Some processors were produced in two packages, both in PGA988 (PPGA988, FCPGA988) and FCBGA1023. If such a processor is installed in your laptop and you don’t know in which case, then I recommend that you first disassemble the laptop and make sure that your processor is not soldered to the motherboard (not FCBGA1023), but a regular Socket G2 processor in PGA988 (PPGA988, FCPGA988) package.

Choosing a replacement processor

So how do you choose a processor to upgrade? You need to choose so as not to make a mistake when buying and not to break your laptop by installing the “wrong” processor.

I will describe the main points that you need to pay attention to when choosing a processor:

1. Generation of processor

The first thing to know is which generation your "old" processor belongs to. In other words, determine whether it is the second generation (Sandy Bridge 32nm process) for the 6th series of mobile chipsets or a newer generation (Ivy Bridge 22nm process) for the 7th series of mobile chipsets. This can be done by looking at the two lists of processors further down this page. By finding your "old" processor in one of them, you will determine the generation of your processor. If you did not find your processor in any of these lists, it is probably a completely different generation (not the second and third) and you need to go to another article that discusses replacements for other generations of processors.

You will most likely need to select a "new" processor within the same list of processors as your "old" processor. However, there is an exception when you have a second generation processor (Sandy Bridge) installed in your laptop, and the motherboard chipset is 7 series, for the second and third generations of processors. In this case, it will be possible to replace the processor with a newer generation processor from the list.

2. Motherboard chipset series

After determining the generation of the processor, you need to decide on the chipset of the motherboard. In other words, determine if the chipset belongs to the 6th series of mobile chipsets (HM65, HM67, QM67, QS67 and UM67) or the newer, 7th series of mobile chipsets from Intel (HM70, HM75, HM76, HM77, QM77, QS77 or UM77).

To accurately determine the chipset of a laptop motherboard, you will need to download any version of the program AIDA64 and look in it for information about the chipset of the motherboard - the name of the chipset. The photo below shows in which section of the program the name of the chipset is indicated:

In our photo, the name of the North Bridge (North Bridge) of the chipset is indicated as: Intel Ivy Bridge-E IMC. From this it follows that the motherboard of the laptop is the 7th series of mobile chipsets. Notebooks with 6 series mobile chipset motherboards will have the following chipset listed: Intel Sandy Bridge-MB IMC.

After knowing the chipset series, we will determine the theoretical candidates from the list of processors. Please note that motherboards of the 6th series of chipsets will fit only processors from the list of processors. But on motherboards of the 7th series of chipsets both processors from the list and some processors from the list will do.

3. CPU thermal package

The thermal package of the processor is one of the main limitations that must be considered. Having found your "old" processor in one of the lists, we look at its characteristics. Specifications include parameters such as TDP. For most processors, it is equal to 35W. In other words, your processor can release up to 35 watts of energy as heat during its "hard" work.

Notebook manufacturers, when designing and manufacturing, usually calculate the laptop cooling system precisely so that it can remove this thermal energy from the laptop case and the processor, like the entire laptop, does not overheat. Overheating of the processor can lead to laptop power shutdowns, reboots during operation, and even damage to the laptop.

From here we draw conclusions. From candidates for "new" processors, it is better to remove those processors that have TDP higher than your "old" processor, otherwise, after the upgrade, you can get processor overheating and all the ensuing consequences.

However, you can take a chance and choose a "new" replacement processor with a TDP higher by 10W compared to the "old" TDP. I would advise you to do this only if your "old" processor was well cooled during "heavy" work and its temperatures were up to 55-60 degrees or lower - the cooling system did a good job of cooling the "old" processor.

Advice: Do not be lazy and "scrub" Google for the existence of configurations of your laptop with other, more powerful processors. Most likely when you bought a laptop, the same laptop models were also sold with more powerful processors. Thus, you will find out if the cooling system is designed for such processors.

Note: By clicking on the cart image next to the name of the processor, you will see an online store where you can purchase this processor. The prices are quite reasonable, the quality from Intel is on top, hundreds and thousands of successful purchases and installations. Order and install! The store has a 100% refund in case of an unsuccessful purchase. Payment from both MasterCard/Visa and WebMoney is very convenient. Delivery to your post office directly from China in 10-30 days (usually about 14 days).

For the vast majority of laptops based on 6-series chipsets, installing quad-core processors instead of dual-core ones is not possible due to the high TDP of second-generation quad-core processors (Sandy Bridge). To upgrade a "weak" Sandy Bridge processor, I recommend choosing one of the Core i5-2xx0M or i7-26x0M.

Features of 2nd and 3rd Generation Intel Core i7 Processors

Processors for Socket G2 can operate at frequencies up to 3 GHz in nominal mode.

Processors based on the Sandy Bridge core, manufactured according to 32nm standards, have a PCI-Express version 2.0 bus. But processors based on the Ivy Bridge core, manufactured according to 22nm standards, have a newer PCI-Express version 3.0 bus.

All processors have a graphics core. The graphics core is part of the overall processor die.

Examples of successful processor upgrades:
  1. I had a replacement Pentium B960 on the Intel Core i7-3610QM. The first TDP is 35W and the second is 45W, there is no difference in heat dissipation. The temperature in the load is 62, in idle 39. To be honest, after upgrading from the Pentium B960 to the Core i7-3610QM, I saw the difference only in parrots, in all sorts of AIDA and a little when converting video. Well, even in the performance assessment of Windows 7, the CPU had a score of 6.1 - it became 7.6.
  2. I changed the processor on a Samsung 300v5a laptop, installed Intel Core i5-2540M. Works well.
  3. Proc Intel Core i3-2350M works in ASUS X54H, you can take it!
  4. ordered Intel Core i5-2540M instead of i3-2310M to your Acer. The processor is up and running.
  5. Bought Intel Core i5-2430M for Dell Inspirion N5050 laptop, installation went smoothly!
  6. Everything is great! Set Intel Core i5-2540M instead of Pentium B960 on my Acer E1-531G.
  7. Installed Intel Core i5-2540M in Lenovo G570 laptop. The performance index of Windows 7 has grown from 4.9 to 7.1.
  8. Bought Intel Core i5-2540M. The processor itself got into the Lenovo B570e without any problems. Everything started without problems.
  9. Changed the processor in a Samsung laptop np300e4a-a01ru c Pentium B940 on the Intel Core i5-2540M. Everything is working.
  10. took Intel Core i5-2540M to replace i3-2350M, laptop Asus K53SM, wound up without problems. The difference in performance is visible to the eye. Hotter than i3 by 7-10 degrees.
  11. Set Intel Core i5-3230M on Lenovo g780, the laptop just flies now.
  12. Set Intel Core i5-2540M instead Pentium B960, laptop Acer E1-531G, works noticeably faster, started without BIOS firmware. It doesn’t get particularly hot, TDP 35w, built-in cooling copes.

Examples of laptop cooling systems with different thermal packages

Should be paid Attention, before replacing the processor with a more powerful one, check the compliance of the cooling system with thermal package installed processor. A processor with a higher thermal package (TDP) will give additional load to your laptop's power supply. In this case, it is recommended to purchase a power supply with increased power. Also, an important role is played number of power phases processor on laptop motherboard. Often, the number of phases corresponds number of chokes located near the processor socket (do not forget about the throttle, which is used to power the integrated processor graphics).
